Hey yall im about to start building a Sig Astro Hog ......any suggestions before i get going? This is also my first kit so i'll prolly need all the help i can get! I've already decided to make it a taildragger, and already have a magnum .91 four stroke for it.

My Astro Hog has about 1/2 the dihedral that the plans call for.
I have flown one built per print and there is not much difference in the way they fly.
To my eye the plane looks better with the reduced dihedral, but that is just to my eye.
I have my landing gear mounted on the fueslage right in front of the wing. I like this better than the wing mounted landing gear, but this is just my preference. If I were to mount the gear in the wing I would build up the structure that holds the torque block strong enough that the gear would bend backwards before it broke any of the structure.
Mine is built with a single aileron servo and has worked fine for several years, for no good reason at all I might go with two aileron servos if I were building another one, don't know why, just seems like the thing to do.

I built mine with the stock dihedral and have no complaints about it. Tail dragger with the mains in the wing, I think it gives a more "classic" look than a fuse mounted aluminum gear. Saito .72 for power, plenty of powere for the way that I fly it. Lots like a .91, so you should be in good shape there. Really, the only mods from stock were dual aileron servos and the tail dragger option. Do a search and you will find several threads dedicated to the hog. Here is mine.

I did all the same as Charlie except I did the two aileron servos. And I have Saito 72 on mine and have plenty of power as well. I guess I'll soon find out if enough for water as I hope to add floats to it soon. I agree the 1/2 dihedral does look better and might be slightly less stable but it's stable enough like that. Flies great. Oh if you think you'll ever fly off water add the rear attach points in the fuse before closing it up!

I built my Astro Hog per the plans as a tricycle and later converted it to a taildragger. I strongly recommend the Dubro Super Strength Landing Gear . I have mine mounted on the wing which turns out to be a real pain to transport (It does look classic though). Mount the gear just ahead of the wing.

I remember bending the balsa sheeting around the tips of the wing as a new experience. I have the little rubber clamp discs that fit on T-pins. These were positioned every quarter inch around the edge while the glue dried. Of course there was a dent where every pin had been. I moistened the wood and used a covering iron to steam the dents out. Pretty cool learning experience.

I prefer the Hayes AL-60 engine mount over the mounts provided in the kit. Use socket head sheet metal screws to mount the engine to the rails. I enclosed the engine (Saito 80) too much with the supplied mounts and it has been troublesome to work on. I hesitate to suggest it but you may want to look at www.fubarhill.com and check out the Hog Bipe pages. The Hog Bipe has the same fuselage as the Astro Hog. You can see some of the engine treatments possible. It may be too advanced for a first kit build but I remember how intimidating the instructions were when they said 'carve to a pleasing shape' for the front of the plane. Leave yourself some room around the engine. I ended up with an additional two degrees of down thrust with the Saito 80. My access holes for the needles were all in the wrong places after adding the two degrees.

I have recently changed the engine to a Saito 91 in a Hayes mount for float flying.

chashint is right reduce the dihedral by half and mount the landing gear to the fuse. My hog keeps breaking with the wing mounted landing gear I have even reenforced the blocks and it still will break loose on a not so perfect landing. I am using a super tiger 61 and it has plenty of power. It flies great and wants to float on landings just a little so be prepaired for a long glid path. It will also roll a long way once it is on the ground due to the weight of the plane. The only problem I had when I built mine was all the carving it took and mounting the fuel tank.

Good luck and have fun with it it will be a great project.

fly safe and be happy

This is copied from a discussion about the Hog over at "RC Groups".
Has I have already stated, this is my third Hog.
The first was a P-51 that was short-lived( first low-wing( stock kit with saito-65)).
The second was a SeaFire( my fav.( OS-91 with 1/2 dehideral taken out), lasted 4-5 years until firewall was totally fuel-soaked.
My current is an easy flying PT-19( Saito-80 only other mods is vertical fin shape.). It is at least 9 years old....

Love those scarfs flapping in the prop-wash!!!

Gotta show-off my hand-painted Hamilton prop logos....

Stock Hog outline except for vertical stab, wifey being shy....

View of underside, my wifey cut-out and applied those ARMY letters for me!!

Thanks for all the ideas, and help. So far I have both wings done, i just need to sheet them and sand them to shape......I have grown to hate sanding already! I know i said i would get some pictures up but its hard to even find time to build on it while taking 17 hours of school!! Thanks again, and i will try to keep everyone posted on how the build is going.

My pilot LuLu has about 200 flights under her belt and she is running an OS .91 surpass 4-stroke. With duel aileron servos and the landing gear under the fusalage she is always ready for more "action". One guy in our club has his landing gear in the wing and has trouble with it bending and damaging the wing.

If I was to build another one I'd sheet the rear stabilizer. It cracked on both sides in flight from LuLu flying it so hard but she's behind the controls once again.

Questions i have for you guys
1) what the Astro Hog fuselage made of balsa or ply wood?
2) what is more easy to fly, the Astro hog or 4*60 and what is more rewarding?

Thanks
Alex
