I just bought a new vacuum pump, and the selller didn't bother to drain the oil before they shipped it. So the vacuum pump has been sitting in a plastic bag for days now in a LOT of oil. It's everywhere! Is this a problem? Can the motor get that much oil in it and be okay?

Thanks,

Daniel

what kind of vacuum pump is it? there are two kinds that i have ran across, rotory and diaphram type pumps. if it's rotary i would just clean it up, put oil in and run it. i doubt anything is wrong with your vacuum pump.

that is one hell of a pump, like i said i would just clean it up, add oil and turn it on, i doubt sitting in oil did anything to motor.

Okay, I'll clean it up and give it a whirl. Yeah, it's a nice pump. I've always used these types of pumps, so when this one popped up on Ebay I bought it. Got a great deal on it!

you need to make sure you add back the appropriate amount of oil and then give it time to settle to the bottom of the accumulator before turning the pump on, you'll burn up the pump otherwise. without completely evacuating the system and adding new oil, it's just a stab in the dark as to how much escaped that you need to add back. too little and you wear the pump and generate excessive heat, too much (or not letting it settle to the accumulator before turning it on) will hydro-lock the pump burning it up.

I believe your Welch pump should have a oil level "sight window"

I'm out of town right now and I can't remember the model of my pump...I also can't take a better photo to show you what exactly your looking for...I remember doing a google search and got a PDF copy of the manual...

In the attached photo you can see a side view of the sight window on my pump...It's the protrusion on the right side of the pump housing...

Nice Pump!!

edit: Link to the manual..

I'm glad I asked! Thanks for the info! I will let the pump sit for a bit. I know the pumps usually have a glass sight gauge, so I'll make sure the oil level happily settles to a point between the hi and low marks. Thanks again!

I just remembered that on Monday when I opened up the box (yes box, the seller shipped a 75 lb vacuum pump in a cardboard box full of packing peanuts - amazing!) I turned it upright so the oil should have settled as much as it's going to by now.
