Hey,
Has anyone ever switched over, or found a way to get re-motivated in the hobbie. I love building, and make it a point to have two planes going at the same time so I can switch when one starts to be too much like work. IN Puerto Rico I have only found one other person that builds, evryone else has arfs, and at a recent fly in there were no warbirds to speak of. between the language barrier, and the lack of participation (there is never anyone at the flying field when I go) I am thinking about just giving it up. Maybe switching to Scale ships, I have found they keep me interested, and it would seem are nice to display. I have been carting around six foot wings, and repairing planes after every move, and I have not soloed yet. That does not bother me because when i do start up the engines and smell the nitro it makes me happy. I have tried a park flyer, and the thing would not fly in the wind here.
I am moving to St Pete in one year and I have seen that there are mant RC clubs. Mybe I will just box it up until then, build a boat and just forget about flying. Or just take a week off and go to the flying field every day, I am sure if I fly I will find motivation. Any ideas are appreciated.

I am in sort of in the same boat. I live 60 miles or so from the closest club and NO ONE and I do mean NO ONE around me flys. I have my own runway but it is sort of boring flying with yourself. I too like to build but have to many house projects going to spend much time building. I did manage to build a Das Not Ugly Stik on Sunday. It was the first time I opened the balsa bin. I ended up scratch building the frame on Sunday. It was a nice day.

I would say get a different park flyer type plane that will handle some wind. There are thousands of free plans out there. Take a trip over to rcgroups and look under parkflyers and see what you can scratch build. Box up the big ones until you get to St Pete and fly the wings off the park flyers.

Nothing wrong with a little cool down time. I lived, breathed, r/c planes for about 11 yrs, then one summer I just quit flying. Life goes in cycles.

Dealing with a stagnant club and hard feeling between members made it not fun. My hobby had turned into a job.

For a couple of years I switched to r/c monster trucks. Nice change of pace and still around nitro, radios, etc. Last year my brother in law says bring out a plane and lets fly.

Flew again after a couple year layoff, was as nervous as a beginner on the first flight but it all came back again and was fun again.

Life goes in cycles, don't fret, just enjoy the time.

i also thought about leaving the hobby my self...as much as i love to fly i dont like doing it alone..... i always knew about this club that is about 20 minutes away, but i have always heard rumors that they are the rich club, and i dont fall into that category...turns out it is not true at all.... i was invited to go fly wit them a few months ago, and havent looked back ever since.... sure i fly alone most of the time during the week, but look froward to the weekends, there is always a nice group of guys.

i hope you pull through, it always saddens me when i hear of someone leaving the hobby

I sat out nitro flying this whole summer, with the exception of my Seamaster which I can bring with me on the boat. I've pretty much migrated to parkflyers that I can fly at a ballfield 200' from my house. Very convenient, as the gas field is about 17 miles away. However, I miss flying my nitro planes, the guys out at the field and everything, but with todays gas prices, the limited time I've had available while dealing with work, getting married, finishing college, and an elderly parent with problems, it seems like I never have the opportunity to get out there anymore. When I do go, I try and make it an all day affair, since the drive eats up so much time. The planes are still in the basement though, so I don't feel I've ever really "quit," maybe just take a hiatus.

Blvd,
Contact Archie at El Centro Hobbies.
He used to spend weekends up near you in the Summer to cool off.
He may still be doing that and he is a good flier.
He also may know other people around there who fly.
Good Luck,

First ...ST Pete in ST petersburg Florida?

SParks?..........

You need to get back to basics. Almost overwelmed with alot of progets then trying to repair planes on top of that?

I found getting an RTF that you just take to the park and enjoy flying helps. What also seems like your missing is the being with other people that you can talk rc with. or just hang out at the field. after all RC is 90% BS and 10% flying.
thats why a park flyer is great as it limits you time flying/traveling and usually any repairs. lets you get that flight in without commiting alot of time of the large ones.

Been there, too. As stated, its not always a bad thing to take a break or change direction.

In the 1980's I flew constantly. I would bring 3 planes to the field, several times a week, and stay for hours. Then, in the early 1990's, different interests took over and flying was an occasional event. I was the Club Secretary so I made sure those duties were taken care of and I also provided flight instruction for my club. This was the only time I flew for years.

Then, in 1999 I decided to try and kickstart my R/C interest and I decided to try R/C helis. This led me to joining another club, make new friends, volunteer, etc. While R/C helis are a blast my heart was always into fixed winged aircraft, so I started to fly my planes again. However, I moved from my giant scale stuff back to the .40 and .60 sized aircraft that brought so much fun in my early days of R/C.

Change is good.

Have fun!
Best,
Brian

There are several warbirds lovers flying in Sabana Seca on Sunday mornings... Big scale.. Maybe you want to drop in.
I go there at the same time, but I'm into jets
good luck

Hi Junkie, don't quite flying because you fly alone. I fly alone a lot. I practice take off and landing. I have quite good. I'm patting myself on the back. When I do go the field to fly with the gang they can't figure out how I got so much better. Herb

Thanks for all the advice. First, I will continue to build my planes whether i fly them or not. I will look up a club or two in St Pete when I get there. Picked up a Flying Models Mag, and it inspired me to get busy, some of those planes are incredible. I will bring my boat on the ship with me, and work on the planes when I am home. going to us my week off to work on them. I have a Flying wing, and a Detowine 520. I am going to make both of them electric. Eventually I will have all my planes at my disposal and be able to fly whenever I can. i will look into the flying at Seba Secana, does anyone have directions to exactly where? I will just drive around on a Sunday and have my son scan for airplanes, it has worked before.

I stopped flying for a couple of years when I got heavy into R/C car racing.
When I got a p/t job at my LHS, I got the flying bug again and I've never
looked back! The problem with R/C racing was I found myself putting more
and more time and money into it to keep up with everyone else. Then I got
the "why am I not winning?" syndrome. When I started building/flying again
I felt somewhat liberated, I began to enjoy R/C again!
