I have plans for a plane that looks amazingly like the Sea Cruiser. They came from the AMA library. It's called the Drake II. The main difference is that the Drake II is a three channel plane. Throttle, rudder, and elevator. It flies on a small .15 engine.

I forgot to mention. I was at the Skymasters Midwest Regional Float Fly last weekend. There were probably 5 or 6 Sea Cruisers that flew there on Saturday. Most were .25 size, but a few were the .40 size. The little .25 was an amazing little plane. It was fast and it would roll like it was on a rail. I think I'll send a note off to Arizona to see when there will be another run of kits.
They had seven planes in the air at a time and flying really kept you on your toes. It was mandatory to have a spotter and it's a good thing. There was no way you could keep track of your plane and all the rest too.
Overall, it was a really great float fly and I'm looking forward to going back next year.

I have the plans for the Drake. It originally was a Ken Willard design 1/2 A free flight. I enlarged the plans to suit a 20 - 25 size engine and actually built one. I can't say it was a great success. The big problem was that it suffered from a lack of floatation forward of the step and also the step was not deep enough. It also needed more angle on the rear hull. It wouldn't rotate once up to speed. Knowing these things a second one would probably work.
Cheers,
Peter

Hello,

Sorry it has been so long since your question about the Seacruiser II. I spoke to Bill Johnson about shipping and he said he has shipped all over the world and would again if he makes a production run. He said he would look into this forum and I hoped he would make some comments.
he would make a comment.

I believe he is out of kits at the moment. I cannot speak for him but he is not through with the kits. From what I got from the conversation, he could make new runs, he could license the kit, he could make or license an ARF. He confirmed that the plans remain copyrighted and he is the sole owner.

If he has enough encouragement he might make more kits. He is aware of the trend away from builder type kits to the assemble type of ARFs and this is a problem. I don't know, but if enough people were to put down a deposit he might make a run of the kit.

I am strill working on mine. I am very slow! This is the best kit I ever built. He hand selects the wood. All the pieces are labeled, any machining is done for you, even the former locations are marked which prevents making two lefts or two rights as well as making former placement perfect.

Many think this is the best flying sea plane available.

I suggest that all interested contact Bill Johnson, 2 Raccoon Ct., Jacksonville, AR 72076. (501-834-8177) It is possible that something can be worked out, but I'm only giving my take on the conversation. This is a very good airplane and I hope it goes on.

Peter, Thanks for the tip on Ken Willard's Drake. Were your plans for the FF version or the R/C Drake II. I ordered the Drake II plans last week with the idea of scaling it up. I'll have to put more thought into it when the plans arrive.

Mine was the 1/2A free flight version. A step at least 1/2" deep would help along with the other things I suggested. I think since RCU has allowed us to share our findings we have come a long way with float plane technology. Getting the nose to sit higher in the water was what I determined would help things a lot.

There's a kit for sale in the RCU Market right now. Here's a link.

Sea Cruiser on RCU Market

I am only posting this here because I saw it. I do not know the condition of the kit or the history of the seller or anything else pertaining to the sale if someone was interested.

For some reason this kit is listed as 60 size. To the best of my knowledge the Seacruiser was only kitted as a 25 & 40 size. I think a 60 would be extreme overkill and even a good 46 would be much more than was ever intended. Even so, $150 is a fair price for this kit; I know I wouldn't part with mine for less.

You are right Peter, the SC came in 25 & 40 size, and a .60 engine would be overkill - not to mention running out of room to swing 60 size props without hitting the fuse hatch.

This seller had 2 of these kits and when I saw the first one for sale a few months back I asked him about the 60 size notation. He replied to me that the 60 he was talking about was the 60 inch wing and that he in fact was talking about the .40 size SeaCruiser with the 60 inch wing. I want to note that this is what he told me, so someone doesn't think it's my words. Anyone considering this kit can leave their own questions in the add.

Yeah, I also agree that if the kit is in like new condition that $150 is a fair price. Bill made a great kit and it was a joy to build due to the perfect wood, great cutting and great instructions as well.

I personally would not build one from plans, even tho' I've build almost a dozen planes from plans in the past. There's a huge parts count. $150 is a bargain because by the time you bought all the wood and hardware you would at least have $100 in parts.

I would be very interested in this kit myself to have a spare, but I don't have the extra cash right now (I need a new radio instead), so I passed the info along to all of you so that someone else can have as much fun flying a SeaCruiser as I have.

Yes Strykaas,

That was me who purchased the Seacruiser II, Jeff and I belong to the same flying club and the Seacruiser has been on my want list for over a year now. I plan on having Jeff help me with the covering.
