What do you mean by straight rear exhaust? They both look straight to me. So I want the one in the right picture, correct?

First pic is older version with muffler outlet straight back. Second pic is like you have. I prefer the outlet to be in the rear. Third pic has both plugs. The lower one is the old one, the upper one is the newer one called the "freedom" plug. The upper one will fit a glow driver (booster) while the lower one needs a Cox type clip.

Also note that a Revlite head is non-conductive so you need a clip that only contacts the plug and adapter.

Final note: The NORVEL plugs and adapter heads are not interchangeable. The old adapter must have the old plug, etc.

A cox glow head will also fit on the norvel .049/.061 ...if your lazy like me and use your starter on a 1/2a engine (they can be cantakarous little things at times), a big starter for a .40 engine can be used as long as your careful and the engine is not flooded,,you will bend the crankshft if it is and the only spare parts you'll find are on the bay and a few odd hobby shops if your lucky...I've only had one glow head fail and it was on a .074 in my LMH heli....Rog

That's yet another version I've seen now. You're older one is pointing straight out the back while this older version has the exhaust in the front pointing out the side.

Lot's of good information here. Thank you guys. I need to do some research (any tips appreciated though) on the Galbreath/Nelson setup and breaking in the engine. I'll probably be getting a new engine. Now to choose a plan(e) I'd really like to build a scale tail-dragger. Then again an ARF would be nice so I can get to flying. Any opinions on what to build? So far I'm thinking one of the following but feel free to suggest somthing else:

Well, I made the plunge! I didn't think a Norval .061 would cost so much but I guess other people wanted it as bad as I did. I know I should've been patient and kept my eye open for others but I can't let you guys have all the fun! So no suggestions on a scale taildragger? Do you think the .061 would fly this Storch?: http://www.espritmodel.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=4372

Me thinks not. We use the .061 Norvel AME in our pylon racing. The models weigh in at around 12 to 14 oz with a 40" span and 200 square inches of area. Now I realize the Storch is not that type of model but a 53" span with 350 sq in of wing area and 28 to 32 oz is a bit much for even the Norvel .061 power house. If it even got it off the ground it would be way underpowered. Also the Norvels like tiny props to run right. We use like 4.5" dia. I guess the upper limit is 6 or even less than 6". Nice looking model though but prolly best suited for a .10 to even a .15 - particularly up there in the big city of Salt. Yer elevation is almost as high (approx 4600') as it is here in Happy Valley.

Yeah, true it is listed as 28-32 oz. flying weight. I'm just wondering if that weight is including the electric setup with a 3S 2100 pack and if flying weight would be lower with glow. Also I saw this video of a 25 oz. Pong 2: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=10380807&postcount=3

I think you might have been more satisfied with an .061 diesel swinging a larger prop for a scale or scale-like tail dragger.

When you find a plane that really is in the size range for the Big Mig .061, many prefer a 6x2 or 5.7x3 APC prop for planes with lots of drag.

Thanks for the prop recommendation. I'm going to tear down the engine and clean it up before oiling it and turning it over 100 times by hand. What is recommended for cleaning it? Denatured alcohol? Will anything else work? I'll be sure to remove all the rubber gaskets. And what oil is the best to use to lubricate it before break in?

Also what parts are needed to convert a C/L carb to R/C?

http://www.thundertiger4u.com/airplanes-series-c-28_132.html?osCsid=d9ef00b74ccd4fdd6b33e4192627bcb6

check some of these, there is one called a Whizard but I dont see it there...use glow fuel to clean, if its new, dont take it apart! I think I actually used 3 in 1 oil for one of mine....by a cheap cox and take it apart,,,you can screw the back of the engine off and check for shavings, but no more than that........Rog

If you really want a scale taildragger for your .061, then look no further than the Herr Engineering Piper Cub kit. They are excellent kits that just about assemble themselves. And they fly great on a .061 - its what they are designed for. The plans even have it drawn in on the nose. Not the fastest plane in the sky, but nice to fly. If you want something that will really boogie with that big mig on the nose, then look up the DNU (Das Not Ugly) in this forum. The plans are available as a download. Or if you prefer a fast kit, a SIG hummer will really get your heart racing.
I have built and flown all 3 with a .061 big mig and was definitely not disappointed with any of them. There are plenty more to choose from, but not much (if any) in the ARF department. Ace Simple Series kits also fly well with big migs.

Thanks for the airplane suggestions. I think I'm going to scratch build something worthy of such a nice engine though, (I haven't seen any ARF's or kits of a good, scale taildragger...although that Cub is nice).

It is new engine but why do you recommend not taking it apart to clean it up? I was reading the Norvel FAQ thread and saw some pretty nasty aftermath pictures of what comes out of a new engine.

It wouldnt do any harm to unscrew the back plate and flush some glow fuel through there.
