Title starts it off

Im at college now and I have experience in both brushless and nitro. But everything I own now wont be reliable or durable enough to last without easy access to a hobby shop.

So I need your help to guide me to a durable, great performing, college beater!

Two options! But ideas are greatly appreciated!

E-revo. I have a revo and its my favorite truck so an E-revo would probably bring me tons of joy without the noise.

Im thinking Monster Mamba Max? Or Some kind of Turnigy 100amp pulse + any good 9XL motor

To keep things simple I will probably run two of the new elite 5000 7cell packs from cheapbatterypacks.com

Wouldnt want any lipo problems in the dorm room!

This setup is gonna be expensive! 400 for revo, between 200-300 for the Motor/ESC, and about 140 for the two 7 cell nimh.

I do own two Firefox 4s 3500mah lipos that i have been using in my dads E-LST2. Those might be available but how would i mount 1 in the e-revo? Prolly poor runtimes as well!

Second Option!

SLASH!

I do own a XXX-t with mamba 5700 and protek rc 4000 11.1v lipo and maxamps 7.4v 6000mah lipo!

So the slash would likely be setup with a Mamba sidewinder? Or some combo from hobbycity costing me like 80 bucks or less

I would probably also buy 1-2 elite 5000 7-cell batteries for safety and for the price.

So slash is around 160-200 depending on my discount
Brushless is around 150

Looking at 300 or less for a good setup!

Ill be running the truck in the grass, on pavement, jumping off stair sets. I need it to hold up for at least 2 weeks before I need a new driveshaft or tranny gear.

Let me know what you guys think!

and thanks for reading!

I have a Slash, drove both my buddies Nitro Revo and my truck today. The slash is sick, if brushless I could easily run with his 3.3. I love the way the slash handles (I went stiffer springs and 80 weight oil) It jumps great IMO, better than the Revo when out bashing. I have 2 4500MAH Trinity Lipro's and I was getting run times over 30 minutes easy. I don't think with a good charger Lipo's are anything to worry about. Mine don't even get that warm when charging. The Slash is built simple, easy to work on, bulletproof. It can take a beating. I really like my Slash.

Cashman- thanks for the quick response i have driven a customers slash with a half charged 7 cell battery and was quite impressed. Except for the fact that everyone brings in titan 12ts that break So thats why i would probably go brushless

I think my two options might be getting narrowed to a brushless slash, or a brushed E-revo with elite 5000 7-cell batteries

I don't have a comment on either trucks as I don't own them but as for safety and lipos.... just buy something to charge them in, a liposack only costs $25 which is cheap insurance. You can also find fire proof boxes on sale sometimes at office supply stores.

All depends on how fast you wanna go and how much money you have... A good E-revo setup will be CRAZY.. You can get almost 60mph out of a truck that big and acceleration you could not even believe... But then again its going to run you almost 1000 dollars...( E-revo, MMM, Neu, 6s) But since you have said you are not running Lipos I would say your looking at atleast 700ish With the Castle MMM Combo and running your own 7 cell Batts... If your only going to be running 7 cells I wouldn't get a MMM waste if you ask me.. The Mamba Max can easily handle that.... A good cheap setup would be a MM with a 8l or so wiich wouldn't cost much more then 200.. If i where you, I would convert my Revo that you sayed you had or buy a E-revo roller off of Ebay to save some money.. Honestly the MM + 8l should be pretty good.

Just get an E-revo, and upgrade to the mamba monster max once it becomes widely avaliable and reliable (read the threads, enough people are having problems with the original V1 and the new V2 releases). Also don't worry too much about not having easy access to a hobby shop, this is still the internet age so you will always be within range of tower hobbies, etc.

LiPo is no more (or less) dangerous than NIMH, any high-rate-discharge capable battery needs to be handled with care, read the threads about NIMH batteries exploding around here. When was the last time anyone around here actually had a LiPo explode or do any real damage.

Slash is too small IMO, not really a go-anywhere 4wd truck like the E-revo.

Druss- being someone that has experienced a lipo battery explode (it was all my fault) i own a liposack but my concern isnt really about the fire as much as pissing off everyone in my dorm if i set the fire alarms off. Liposacks are great but the smoke will still fill my entire room and probably cost me smoke damages.

Smart + strange= yea a guy at my LHS drove it full speed 20-25? into a curb and it just stopped dead.......nothing broke.

wildyfz450- your just the guy I wanted to find. I forgot that the regular mamba max is a beast. So about 120 for the esc (tower discount used). The 8L goes for like 50 maybe less on hobbycity.

I would also need a BEC and fan correct? BEC= 22.00 Fan= 9-10$ from muchmore racing

So I would be at 400 (revo) 130 (batteries) (120) ESC (50> Motor (22) BEC (10) Fan = 732 not horrible......and I could get a roller or a used revo off of ebay

My question is what kinda of performance do you think I would be looking at with this setup?

Speed? Hopefully a good 40?
Runtime? Hopefully 20-30min?
8L temperature? Hopefully cold!

Thanks for your help!

that setup will run pretty warm after 5 minutes or so. I suggest the 9XL, and gear it for 35 should be OK, but those Feigao motors run hot no matter what. If you get thos ehobbycity motors, I suggest getting 2 of them, some of them don't work so hot form what I am reading.

Access- I understand completely from what you saying, after all i charge my cell phone every night and thats lipo. But another factor is money. If i start out with a normal E-revo i dont have lipo cutoff and I am limited to 7.4 volts each. So if i want optimum performance I would have to run a set of 7 cells and then once I get the MMM buy another set of lipos

Another question I have is what lipo would I run? The battery compartments are tight I dont think two 3s 5000mah lipos will fit without some serious dremel work

AutoXman- Yeah I figured it would run hot. What about a medusa in a 8L size? Do they make that? Would it run cooler?

Quick update!!!!

I have talked to an awesome guy at castle creations and I have decided on my setup for the E-revo!!!

MMM V2 combo with the 2200kv motor running 2 2s lipos in series to create 14.8v and 6000mah of runtime!

I should be hitting 40+ and getting 25-30min run times!

Since I already own 1 maxamps 2s 6000mah this conversion will be EASY

I have found an E-revo for 350+100 for the extra battery + whatever my boss will give me as a price on the MMM hopefully around 250. So I am looking at about 700 plus another receiver for my spektrum!

Thanks guys for all your help but I have decided the e-revo is the way to go!

Anyone have any other ideas that i will need for my e-revo setup?

Honestly if your going the e-revo route i would say go for the MM combo if you wanna save some cash.. MMM if your not worrying about cash, these are the best setups if you ask me for the prices.
Mamba Max.. 8l ( This will not be hot at all.. Just ran 2 fans of the battery for the motor/esc and drill holes in the case did it on mine and its perfect) Since your going to be running 4s I would suggest a 9l.. You can get a CC bec and disable the MM's bec ( cut the red wire) You can run your batterys in a series wich will be 14.4vs with 6000Mah or in a series 12000mah run forever but you will have almost stock speeds.. for Fans I would pick up some Neweggs there about 4 bucks and have free shipping. Best fans for the money.
If you have the cash the MMM is the choice.. You can get the combo for around 280ish but you won't be going much faster then the MM on 4s if you really want to see performance i would get 6s batterys.. Thats what makes the MMM so special handling all that voltage.. Pick up some 3s and wire in a series 6s.. You will see almost 60mph with that.
With the MM you will see around 40mph thats what I get on 4s. with MMM on 4s you will only see about 45mph.. So the MMM wouldn't be the choice unless you want higher voltage batterys.. 6s would be the choice...
