As you remember a few days ago, I submitted a wattage pitts special 400 I planed on building, but in my last post on it I took pic's of the cheap constuction letting go, or it could have just been the torque of the BL430 motor that seperated the mount from the airframe not once, but twice! even with 3/8 tri-stock reinforcing it!
So I took the good-old O.S. .15la and sized it up to the air frame, now I weighed it all out and it comes in at 26 ozs +- 1 oz. But I'm a stickler for scale cowls soo,... I did a few mods to the stock muffler to make everything squeeze inside nice and tight. Now ,I know!?, I have a nice and tight car muffler/header, but the engine was way too loud and honestly? it plain sucked!, it hesitated and took about 2 seconds to clear-out and then it would get to maybe 12,000 r's tops. So with the exhaust figured out, we have to reinforce the airframe a bit, I went from a speed 400 to a .15 nitro, (go figure), so I've doubled the firewall up with a piece of 3/32" ply and epoxy sealed it shut, but now I have to put my hs 81's in it because I now have a .15 and vibrations to deal with, but it's O.K.
All the Pitt's I've owned in the past needed tons of weight in the nose due to the short coupling of the design, so why add lead when I can add or adjust function of the internal layout, before I did any altering of the muffler or firewall, I checked the C.G., it felt like I needed about 3/4 lbs of weight in the nose to make this grasshopper fly, well the motor, firewall, bigger servos, fuel tank and std reciever makes it come out just right. Why? this poor thing was designed around a 7 cell nicad with a cobalt 400, I actually think it's going to weigh the same but have longer flight times and more power.
So enough B.S., here's the pic's,
First two are the electric motor mount failing due to poor wood/glue or torque, the others are the mods to the muffler to get it all to fit inside the cowl and the firewall reinforcement, soon I have the motor mounted, fuel tank and the larger servos on a new tray more foward as well. I'll keep you posted as I go.

All right, so now I've got the throttle servo in, throttle cable, motor w/mount, fuel tank, ez fueler, reciever, switch & battery. Ran the motor and throttle transition is good as well as rpm ( don't know battery in tach is dead). everything fits just fine except the muffler, as much as I tried, cutting, grinding, welding,.... I still had to cut a small hole in the cowl for the front of the muffler! O-well, at least it's only the size of a dime or so, I also screwed up while punching the holes in the cowl. I marked every hole after mounting the motor, pulled the cowl off and cut the holes. then realized that I lined it up with the drive washer on the motor that had slid forward about 3/8". So already I have to fix or make a mold of the cowl, I also realized that 1 3/4" wheels would work better, so the 40 mm wheels have to go.
Left to do, cowl, interplane struts, center controls and decals( if wanted) & canopy.

Looks good so far. I did this with an electric also. the only problem I ran into was the HS-55 servos. They didn't like the shaking. Upgraded the servos and it did fine till I gave it to a kid after taking the grar out of it. Should prove to be lots of fun. Keep us posted.

Nice work! It's going to end up real light for a .15 powered plane.

I don't like the exhaust location. Perhaps you need a 'Pitts" style muffler.

I'd love to have a pitts muffler, but no one makes one for the os .15 la, I guess I could make one, but it would cost too much to build and weigh more than the one I have right now. I forgot to add in the weight of the interplanes and switch and larger tires, so it weighs 1 lbs 14 ozs (no fuel). I guess it'll still fly ok.

My Herr Extra with same engine is 2.4 lbs and flies great, I didnt see the cowl for yours yet you my need to cut a few flaps for air to exit so the muffler/engine doesnt get too hot...Rog

rog's Extra flies great. No trouble at all taking off on our bumpy, grassy runway. At full throttle it seems to have more than enough power. But, it still floats in nicely on landings.

I'm with Yuu on the muffler
I'm suprised it is not restricting the top end RPM
just how long is that tube?

I once had 6" of tube on an AP15 (bench), and it cut the rpm like half

That tube? you mean the exhaust deflector,,I'm guessing about an inch? half the size of a hobbico exhaust deflector,,might take away 100 rpm or so...Rog

Just pull the baffle and bump the nitro up to around 50%. It'll be fine....

disclamer.....for those of you that did already know it....I'm kidding. Relax. I ment to say 60% LOL

The exhaust tube is only 1 3/4" long, I could trim it to 1 1/2" if needed, but it tachs up nice and keeps the fuel charge in the cylinder for instant throttle response, the stock baffle is still in the muffler. Didn't get a chance to work on it today, decided to take the day off, hop on the boat and shoot out to greenport NY, went to claudio's. It was good, little choppy on the water but still good. I mounted the wheel pants and the 1 3/4" wheels tonight, but that's all I got done.

So now that I'm sobber from yesterday's fun,.... I got a few more things done, cowl ( I'm ashamed how it looks), canopy tinted and RC560 in place. The canopy took a while, first I couldn't find my airbrush then the window tint and to top it off, RC560 takes for ever to dry! I veto'd harry the pilot I had for this plane because of weight, but I'll use him in the allstar bipe next or after the quickee plans on the bench. The os pee'd on the plans and when the electric motor ripped out it tore a small hole in the plans as well. But other than that, I have to mount the switch add some decals and balance it out by shifting equipment. Maybe tommorow I'll fly her, it's been raining all day here in mystic, ct.
