I just bought a new OS .18 two days ago. I broke it in today and found that the factory settings of the high speed needle were very rich. I decided to keep the setting considering I was using 33% fuel to break it in and get proper lubrication. First I'd just like to ask is it safe to run it very rich the first five tanks then begin to lean out? Anyways, once the 5 tanks were done, i began to lean out very slowly. Now the directions for the OS engine tell me to get the high-speed needle to its best performence then richen it a little. I did that and im seeing smoke. Also a drop of water doesn't sizzle away.... in fact it just stays there for like 20 seconds, although when i get the carb fully open on the track its got a much higher pitch the my older os. 12. Am i running it too lean or does the OS .18 naturaly make a higher pitch?

I'm going to say it runs like that or my tuning is off also. I have a dtx 18. (3 cc) and when I give it a lot of throttle it has that high pitch sound sound. I'm running rich right now also because I rebuilt my engine last week. So if anything, we may be running to rich at the time....may try leaning it out. Run as rich as possible as long as possible though, longer engine life.

one key thing is you have to have a temp gage the spit sizzle method is not good at the os afctory settings my car was only running at 160 you want to run at 200 to break in so your block expands and does not wear out durring break in , you have to adjust leen or ritchen to get into the right temp range to low a temp is not good for the piston or sleeve .

Running overly rich can be bad for an engine just as running too lean. Tune for performance and richen just a tad to ensure it's getting the lubrication it needs - don't run it blubbery.

I recently switched over from a trx3.3 to an os18tz. I found that the temps dropped when I switched to 20% fuel over 30%. The os manual says use 5-20% fuel. The power difference was not noticeable and no difference in ease of tune.

I also had to regear the revo to get the engine in the proper rpm band. It was revving too high causing overheating.

Just a couple things to try.

Thanks for the fast replies! Well iv'e been reading allot about breaking in a 2 stroke engine latly and the point of running it up to temperature is to expand the top of the sleeve so it doesn't wear down the piston faster. Is it to late to do a heat cycle and expand the piston?

Your not actually expanding the piston, its the sleeve that is expanding. Its never to late to do a heat cycle, What good it will do, IDK. But it certainly cant hurt it.
