what i do on my stampede is take them completely apart , dump out all the oil, wash out everything and clean everything. then i put the bottom part together,( o rings) and the piston together. then i stick the piston in, be careful not to get the threaded end caught on the o-rings or what ever kind of seal your shocks have. you can use pliers with some rubber or a rag to help screw on the eye thingy on the bottom. don't ever use metal pliers directly on the shaft, it will scratch it and cause oil to leak. then i put oil in right up the the top and slowly move the piston in and out, to get the air bubbles out. sometimes i put the shock in some kind of holder and wait about a half an hour or so (get all other shocks to this step) wait awhile (highly recommended) to get all the air bubbles out. then i push the rubber diaphragm into the shock, its good if some oil spills out, it means you have no air at all in your shock. then screw the cap of tightly, (if you have problems with the shock caps coming off put some Teflon plumbers take around the threads. i have never dome that, be many people says it works. then finish by putting spacers (optional) and the spring/retainers on.
