Does anyone have a trick to get water slide decals to PERMENANTLY attach to shrink covering like Solarfilm or Monocote? None of the decal setting liquids seem to work.

Is this a decal directly from a kit or a custom printed decal on printer or laser paper?

To make them absolutely permanent you probably have to clear coat them. Also I doubt the ink is fuel proof so clear coating would take care of that as well. FYI I'm in Springfield too.

I have used MicroMark's laser decal paper with fairly good success. My problem is I have to find a copy store with the right equipment that won't charge an arm and an leg to print. After the set of decals are printed I coat them with Topflite Lustercoat clear to fuel proof them. Applying them is just like with a small plastic static kit, soak, slide off, press out, and let dry, etc.

Gary, Yes I protect from the top as you suggest prior to applying but my problem is getting them to stick to the shrink covering. My experience is that ANY amount of pressure to the decal after it should be set causes it to peal away from the covering. There is no adhesion between the decal and the covering. I don't want to spray the covering with the clearcoat.

I guess I am looking for something that will produce the same properties as adhesive tape for water slide decals after they are applied.

BobH, Good to know I have a neighborhood modeler. Where do you fly?

I don't have your problem. As a matter of fact, if I want to remove a decal I have to burn/melt it off with a heating iron!! Again, I use a MicroMark product.

Well, I guess I am using the wrong decal paper. I got mine from BelDecal on line. I will check out the MicroMark product. Do they have an on-line site? Shoot me the link if you can.

Checked out the MicroMark site and they have the same basic product as I am using. I am going to try to dilute some white glue (Elmers) in the water used to release the decal. Hopefully, when it dries, the residual glue will provide the adhesion needed. I just thought someone may have already figured this problem out. I will get back to this thread with my results.

I forgot to clarify that I spray the sheet of decals before I place them on the plane........like you, I would not want to spray the covering after I put the decals on. I am tempted to try MicroMark's ink jet printer decal paper so I can print this stuff at home. Or I guess I could just buy my own color laser printer .

Gary, Yes I got that, spraying the sheet prior to application.

For your printing consider an Alps Printer. The print is in the same family as the laser jet and the printer has other options that make it attractive to the modeler. The Alps is the only printer that can print a white image and then print the color image over it, maintaining the image registration in the process. I don't think they are still manufactured but the supplies are still available. You can find the printers on eBay around $200-$400 with the S/W application drivers.

I have had very good luck using Micromark paper, inkjet printer and a matte clear coat (for painting miniatures, found in most hobby stores). I clear coat and let dry thoroughly before I apply them.

Try temporary tattoo kits. They are applied to waterslide decal paper, yet use a pressure-sensitive adhesive that is quite tenacious. Once they're stuck down, they won't want to come up ever.

While they aren't truly fuel-proof, they do not require a clear-coat as the decal film itself provides the sealer.
