My kids bought me a yard bee kit for father's day (the wife doesn't know yet since it will arrive next week). What is a good size engine for it? The manual says up to .09 and tower's website says up to .10 so I was looking at the OS .10. What does anyone else think, is the OS a good idea?
I will be using throttle on whatever engine decided on.
Thanks

depends, if your worried about too much power, dont....if your looking for a plane to float around the air, its a fine choice...I havent bought an OS since the FP series went out, but it was a good heavy heavy duty engine that ran fine.......Rog

Flyinrog, I'm not worried about too much power, if there is such a thing, I can always throttle back

How does this sound?
Yard bee
.10 OS LA
1 oz fuel tank
7x4 nylon prop
555 receiver with 3 micro servos

where is a good place to get a Norvel .074 online? My LHS is 40 miles away and I would rather pay for shipping then tax and gas.

JK Aerotech sells them. They also have some wonderful ½A mounts.

You can also buy direct from SIG/Norvel.

I have an OS 40 LA and a OS .25 LA contol line and like them a lot. The norvel from what I have read doesn't have a normal glowplug so wasn't sure about them. I still am leaning toward the OS .10 even tho it is 3.95 oz and only .27bhp. I'm sure it will be enough power to pull the yard bee around the field.

Forgot to mention. I use 15% nitro and 20% oil in all my engines, air and land vehicles. I don't want to get a different fuel for one engine.

Norvel plugs cost less than OS #8 plugs and last a long time, so I'm glad they use a different plug. I run some of my Norvels on 15% nitro and 20% castor. Others I run on 25 to 35% nitro.

I've got lots of OS and Norvel engines in different sizes. I'd take a Norvel over an OS any day. OS makes great engines, but I think the Norvels are more power and less weight for the buck. Also, I've never had a liner peel on a Norvel.

It sounds like you've already decided what engine you want to buy and I think you'll be quite happy with the combination you specified. I would go with a 2 or 3 ounce tank for a .10 though.

I have build small Lazy Bee about the size of Yard Bee (28.5" wingspan). I used Norvel Big Mig .061 turning MA 7x3. Ready to fly is about 14 oz (with 2oz fuel) an it has unlimited vertical.

Bipe Flyer, my "kids" decided on the yard bee so it will be mid June before I get it and from what I have read from you and other post on this site, the norvel .074 sounds like a better choice and they are only $50 from quantum models.

Thanks for helping me decide. The engine I can buy in about a week or so and the radio.... I still haven't finished researching that. Any ideas???

Your radio decision will depend on what you may do in the future.

I have a JR 783 and a JR 8103, both of which I love. The 4 major brands in North America, Futaba, JR, Hitec and Airtronics, are all good with Futaba and JR being on the higher end of features and price.

You should look at the features each offers and decide from there. What do you have right now? You may want to stick to the same brand for the sake of compatibility.

If I were to start from scratch now, besides the 8103 I'd consider the Futaba 9C because of it's switch layout (love those side mounted pots) or the Hitec Eclipse 7 for the cost per feature and Hitec's Spectra module.

If you dont want to spend big bucks on a radio you can allways pick up one of the Hitec 3 channels for round 69.00.

Personaly I own a Hitec Eclipse with spectra module.
Buck for Buck I found it to be the best value and it has more features then Ill ever learn to use

Radio more or less depends on how much money you have to spend and how many types of planes you plan to own and how long you think youll stay with the hobby.

My current radio is a Futaba 6YG. My trainer helped me pick this one out.
I would like to keep the cost of flight pack for my rec'r or whole radio system with three servos to around $110. I want to stay away from AM and being a "yard" model, I don't care about much distance if I pick up a rec'r and x-mitter.
Can I use the Hitech 555 rec'r and HS-81 servos be a good idea for this rig? http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=TE3515&P=7

From the quantum models website, is the Norvel XL Glow Plug 07 the plug for the norvel .074? http://www2.mailordercentral.com/quantummodels/

Don't worry about answering the second question about the glow plug, because I just finished the order for the Norvel .074 and two of the glow plugs mentioned above. If I ordered the wrong ones, I'd rather find out when John, the UPS man, drops them off next week.

Final edit.
Can I use a standard (1.5v) glow plug starter with the norvel .074?
