Has anybody built a cnc foam cutter? I have found some plans on the net for a couple of versions. the sliding part of it looks easy. I just need to know of a good place to get and what stepper motors are recomended. I see alot of them on e-bay but Im not sure what ones would be good. I have been bitten by the foam bug, the templates and the primitive gravity feed thing isnt cutting it, no pun intended. any suggestions??

Hi, new guy here. I'm in the early stages of building a 2-axis CNC cutter for Depron sheet. I'm building it out of an old Okidata printer. They're a good source for step motors. About the only thing I'll have to buy are the driver boards and the cutting bit. I may need a new power source, though. The printer had two transformers that put out 10.6 and 35 volts, IIRC. The motors are rated at 4 and 12 volts. Electronics is my weak area so I'm not sure if those will work as-is.

Anyway, once it's done I think my first project will be a J3 Cub that I saw over at RCGroups. Then I think I'll do some simple profile foamies. I like to build 3DCG models of warbirds and I think I can adapt some of the profile curves toward the profile planes.

Here's a shot of the machine. I'll use the flex-shaft attachment from my Dremel as the cutting device. I had to reposition the black roller to get it out of the way of the cutter. I'm going to put a hardboard platform level with the top of the roller for the foam sheet to rest on. The advantage to using a roller instead of having the yoke travel on rails is that the length of the sheet won't be limited. I'm only limited by the width of the model.

Steve S.
