Mark,

Congrats on you purchase...you will be very pleased with the HET-RC F-20 as it is a very good model. As far as servo selection for the Elevator is concerned, I would recommend using the HS-81MG or HS-85MG as they are much stronger than the HS-65, which may work ok but not hold up as well. You have to realize that the Elevator is at the bottom of the model and will take some stresses during launch and more particularlly, during the landing as it drags through the grass. A stronger servo will help take the hit during these times.

As far as tips are concerned, I would recommend you reinforce the Elevator servo with either wood blocks on the sides or with some clear silicon sealer to buffer side motion during operation so the servo tape does not loosen. Also, you should add some balsa planks in the front of the model in the battery compartment, as the walls and floor are rather thin balsa and they are a weak point. Finally, some people bolt on the Horizontal Stab, but this requires some work, installing hardwood plates where the bolt holes reside, otherwise the bolts will pinch the balsa and pull loose. You should also add hardwood stiffeners to the sides and rear to keep the stab from flexing around the bolts if you decide to bolt it to the fuselage. They bolt it on so they have access to the rear compartment, however, I would really recommend gluing the stab with epoxy as this is the safest way to mount it. Finally, if you are using a 72mhz receiver, I recommend you run the antenna out the rear of the fuselage and let it follow the model. I tried several positions inside the model and could not find a good spot without receiving interference from the system.

I do recommend the use of a U-BEC for the reciever and servos, as it adds that extra bit of safety if you have a probem with the ESC and removes the extra work the ESC would need to do if it had to supply BEC power. I suggest you take a look at the photo build construction article for the model to get familiar with the steps required during assembly. You can view it at www.warbirds-rc.com in their Research Center section under Build Articles. Good luck and let us know if you have any other questions.

Carl

Carl,
With your 72mHz receiver, did you leave it in the back and have the antenna trail aft, or did you move the rx somewhere else. I've been sitting on mine and the one thing I haven't figured out is whether to run extensions to put the rx in the cockpit area, or ahead of the fan.

Thanks,

I left the receiver in the back and let the antenna run out the rear with no problems.

Mark,

Shaping the intakes will get you a few more mph, but you don't need to do it. My prototype is still stock and flies fine with the standard stock intakes.

A 9314MG servo from Hobby City would work well for the levator as well. I have a 9320MG in mine and it is just a tad too big, but has tons of torque.

Mark, Carl is the man on the HET birds, but if it's any help to you I did a build on mine here.

http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2919&highlight=het+20

I pushed the envelope on mine, putting over 1000 watts in it. One of my buds managed to turn it into a large crater this weekend when it got away from him.

I've already got another on the way, I really liked it. Heck it impressed me enough that I also have the Me262 from them sitting here, on the build schedule.

Hey guys, was told that the HET- F-20 would be a good EDF to start on. Am looking at building one, anyone who has flown one have a suggestion as to what to power this with?I am not looking to have a super rocket plane, I jsut want one with some extra nads in case I need it to abort a landing ect. First off is this a ok plane to learn EDF on? I have been flying for a long time and have tons of flight experience on all types of planes. I would really like to paint this if I get one but dont like the idea of painting over ultracoat. I know it can be done but I have never tired it before. I have a picture of what I want in terms of paint scheme. I need the lighted way to seal the balsa otherwise. Any suggestions? Should I add gear of belly land this plane, looks as if it would be a great candidate for retracts with the added weight I am unsure of flight characteristics . On another important note, how fast do these things land... I know they dont have a lot of wing area, what is stall speed like on it? heres what I am thinking..

*Tiger paint scheme(see Pic)
*Retracts
*A6000 Spectrum RX
*Spektrum HT MG miniservos
*Detailed cockpit

Any suggestions would be great, even if this isnt a good Starter plane for EDF, I still want to get it, I will get whatever someone suggested to learn on, And make this one of my winter builds. Thanks guys
