I've never flown any Gasers and have a question.

Can you buy an Aero Engine with a recoil starter?

I remember seeing the Tartan twin with recoil and was just wondering why you don't see the big gasers with recoil/rope starters? The Zenoah marine/hello engines have them and I understand that a scale model wouldn't look right with a handle hanging off the front cowl but for a model like the GP Giant Big Stick or the Bridi Big Bee I think it would work.

Am I missing something? Is it dangerous?

Thanks in advance.

Aside from safety, i'm sure the battle to have lightweight high performance engines ruled it out.

I think it's mostly weight. I have an old Quadra 42 with a spring starter and an mag ignition and the weighs a ton. Good engine though...

honestly, most modern gassers with electronic ignition start very easily and there really is no need for a spring starter or other starting aid.

Several engines in my fleet ( GT-80, G-62, Quadra 75) still use spring starters. Yup, they are heavy but on the planes these particular engines are mounted on, nose weight is necessary anyway .... such as old warbirds, etc. On older mag ignition engines, they can be quite a blessing and I still believe they serve a very real purpose. Safety .... what could be safer to operate than winding the prop backwards and just letting go. I prefer modern, electronic ignition engines, but older, spring starter engines can live on for a very long time. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a new spring started engine if it fit my purpose.

I watch a modeler using a recoil pull the firewall out of his plane trying to start a flooded Tarten

Was that the engine or the recoil starters fault?...

Well hard to say, BUT I've never seen anybody jerk the firewall out when hand proping an engine.
If its there somebody will abuse it

I'd lay the blame on the guy at the end of the rope!

I bet that was something to see. I would have been rolling on the ground laughing!

Are we talking a rope pull starter or a spring starter such as used on some Zenoah engines? In my post above, I was referring to spring starters where you just wind the prop backwards against the spring and let go. I can't imagine using the rope thing. Though a local modeler here did use a pull rope (many years ago) on the front of a prop hub. That was quite a sight to watch.

I was at a fly-in several years ago and witnessed a guy wrapping a rope around the crankshaft of a G-38. I thought, "what the heck?" Don't you know he gave a tug on that rope and the engine came to life. It didn't appear to be very safe, but it worked..........
