Does anyone know anything about model fuel becoming unstable and more explosive with age. A town close to where I live had a whole city block evacuated because of some old model fuel. The news report said that any fuel six or more years old becomes very unstable.

Mitchell,
Read the Fuel FAQ's.
I would assume that some reporter took some literary licence a little too far with out all the facts.
Fact: Nitromethane will become shock sensitive when exposed to sunlight or when it has been allowed to evaporate into salts. keeping it tightly capped in a cool dry dark place will help prevent this. I could possibly imagine (from your post) a real old metal can of partially used fuel where the cap had some grainy crystals around the metal cap lip from not being tight enough over the years. The crystals may be shock sensitive, so the friction involved in removing the metal cap from the metal can could possibly be enough for autoignition of the crystals.

I have run fuel that was stored PROPERLY that was ten years old. If it is kept tightly capped and in a cool dark place, no problem should exist.

Last summer I got some fuel that was at least 6 years old, it only exploded when combusted in my engine.
