I am new to electrics. I recently bought a mini funtanaX arf ( http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/TechnicalSpecs.aspx?ProdID=EFL2425 ) combo from Chief Aircraft. They offer it with the recomended motor/esc and an upgraded version. I bought the upgraded version.

The motor is an AXI 2808/24 the specs can be found here ( http://hobby-lobby.com/brushless-axi2808.htm ).
The speed control is a castle creations Phoenix 45
The battery I'm using is a "common sense" 11.1v 2100mah 15c
I had them send me a prop they figured would be "middle of the road" between 3d and sport flying, it is an 11x4.7

I have a few friends with the eflite pnp mini pulse and I wanted something different than thiers. I flew my friends minipulse and it ( IMO ) was awesome.

Now the problem, the mini funtanaX with this combo performed about 1/2 as well as the pnp minipulse with the same battery. By that I mean it seemed lacking in power and the flight time was like 6 minutes at 1/2 throttle a lot of the time. I flew 2 batteries through it and then the motor burned out.

Could I have gotten a bad motor or is this a bad combo for the plane. AXI is replacing the motor but it is backordered and I am waiting. Should I get a different motor and use the replacment when it comes on something else?

THANKS in advance...

It looks to me like you overloaded the AXI with that 11x4.7. In the specs you referenced, they recommend 9x5 for the AXI 2808/24 on 3S lipo. If you go with the Park 480 recommended for this plane, your performance should be outstanding, similar to your friend's. You need more torque (lower Kv) for 3D. The Park 480 is rated at about 20 amps continuous, and around 980 Kv and is almost a perfect match for the 11x4.7 you tried on the AXI.

A wattmeter is an essential tool to use when trying to optimize the power train. It will indicate a potential overload condition before any damage is done. There are many excellent stickies on this site describing the essentials of power systems. Once you are familiar with a few key relationships, you will select the right battery, ESC, motor and prop with confidence. Generally, you are trying to select elements that can conduct the current flowing through them without overheating while delivering the power needed to fly your plane in the manner you desire. Good luck with your set up!

Ditto for the Park 480. My MFX performed extremely well with it. I used the 11 X 4.7 and also a 12 X 6 for higher speed / sport flying.

Here are the combo(s), http://www.chiefaircraft.com/rcmsec/Models/ElectricAirplanes/Kits/MiniFuntanaX.html

So it sounds like the more expensive combo is not as good as the other.

Maybe I will wait for the new AXI to arrive, send it back to Chief to trade for the Park 480. Does that seem like a good option.

Or would I be ok with the 9x5 prop on the AXI

Thanks

molyhotdog;

I bought the mini funtanna with this motor when they first came out. The motor was so so, bairly hold a hover with a 2100 3c 20C TP battery. I kept the motor hoping to find something it would work well in. Gave away the airplane after installing a Hacker. Airplane is pure junk IMHO. Hope the X version is better.

If you're looking for your Mini Funtana to be fast, like the Mini Pulse, I think you're going to be disappointed. The Pulse series of airplanes have a very slippery airframe and cuts through the air easily. The Funtana X is a little chunkier and flys slower. If you try to fly it fast like a Mini Pulse, you will run out of battery, quickly. The Funtana is designed to fly much slower and make extreme manuevers. If you like the way the Mini Pulse flys, you won't like to Funtana. .....Pat
