Larry, may have to ship my airframe off to you for painting. I'm going to make myself that PVC tubing frame I see in the photos. Can you take a few measurements for me: Length, Height, Width of the opening in the middle. Hi guys. Chic

Chic,
I will take the measurements for you tomorrow and as for painting maybe I can get the wife to let me help you there LMAO
The masking is easy, it's the sanding a cleaning prior to painting is the real PITA, but whatever I can do for you let me know.
I'm still trying to think how I'm going to do the rounded rectangle on the cowl for the slate color.
Tamiya sells a really narrow masking tape that you could use before using the thicker tape when masking, it goes around broad curves no problem.

Looks awesome, Larry. Can't wait to see her all painted!

Well, after 5.5 months of travel and interviews, I've finally made my decision on where I'll start the next phase of my career....

Hitch up the wagons, boys, we're headed to Oklahoma!

I start my new job as Assistant Professor of Microbiology and Immunology on July 1st at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City.

Pretty excited to get started... not only on the job, but also as a fellow flyer and club-mate of Boyd Maser (a.k.a Maser) and Steve Keesey (a.k.a. WARBIRDRCER)! Looking forward to seeing you guys soon!

Noah

One more thing, I was flipping through one of Sam Parffit's threads ("Road trips 2012") and he showed some pictures from the Toledo show which appear to reveal an Avenger ARF that spans 108" That's a pretty odd coincidence, huh? Charlie, did you go to Toledo, or do you know about this ARF? Wonder if someone framed one up and made molds...

Larry, the Avenger is looking good. The plane really starts to take on its own personality when you get to the painting stage. The offer for you to do the first flight at the Quakertown field still stands if you want to.

Noah, I thought we might be seeing you at some events in the northeast. I am sure the clubs in OK will enjoy having a new member. I did not see Sam's post and didn't know that a new ARF Avenger was hitting the market. I seems funny that it is 108" wing span and uses Sierra Giant Scale retracts. Oh well, I guess we will see more Avengers at the warbird meets. There is still nothing like the satisfaction of building your own warbird.

Hey Larry,
Looking good, hope you can paint mine too, dying to see more pictures.

Noah,
Congrats on the job, wow Microbiology and Immunology and he builds airplanes, whew I have trouble enough patting my head and rubbing my stomach at the same time.

I took a look at the ARF,  the way I figure it,  if it looks like a rip off and tastes like a rip off,  well you know the rest.

Hi guys,
Noah congrats, I think you and Boyd will get along famously, and he might even get you to build a T-28 Trojan... Lol
As for the paint we'll see when the next coat goes on, the masking is a pain to say the least but alas it is starting to look like a real plane.
As much as I liked the thought of the grey/white scheme I think the new scheme is much more interesting and colorful.
Peter, I'll trade you my masking skills for a set of legs for the mains, just have to figure out how to con the wife out of the airfare.
Charlie thanks again for the offer, we will see once we get the paint and electronics finished.
Next fall we are going to try and start an E2C Hawkeye, though we may need some assistance in scaling up the planes we have for it.
In the meantime thanks for the encouragement and kind words.

Congrats again Noah, our loss is OK gain

 Hi Guys,

Larry you don't have to worry about a hotel just the airfare and bring the beast, (the airplane).

The latest pics. show landing gear bits and doors.
The aluminum doors get a few rubs in the english wheel to set some shape into them before fitting up.
Applied pinked tape to moving surfaces over linen.
Started to work out canopy and slides.

Noah,

Congrats on landing you new job.......

However, I am a little bummed things didn't work out for you at ODU. I could have hooked you up with an awesome flying club and I could have seen your AWESOME Avenger fly in person.....

My apology for wandering off topic.

Noah,

I understand moving to a new job and leaving your local group of RC friends. I also can attest to how great the local OKC RC groups are. I moved here from south Alabama 11 years ago after living and flying almost Dailey with the same group of friends there, but upon arriving and meeting the new flyers and builders this became my new group of RC friends. Okay, I must add in case one of them reads this; I miss you guys! Although I still chat on the phone with them from time to time.

Boyd and I are looking forward to meeting you and boring some holes in the sky with you. When you arrive please let us know. If you are short on space, no problem; I can hanger a plane or two for you until you get set-up and I will always have something for you to fly.

See you soon it seems,

Thanks for all the well-wishes and encouragement, guys.

I’m thrilled with my decision: I know that I can do my work in OKC, but best of all, the college, department and the faculty are terrific groups who have been nothing but supportive of my candidacy from day one.

It’s been a weird process… some places, like ODU, never even acknowledged receipt of my application, and other places, like Penn State, offered me a position but it felt like they were dragging their feet and in the end they could not get their act together fast enough to offer specific terms (start-up package, salary, etc…). Not in a million years was I going to pass on a very solid offer from Oklahoma based simply on the “hope” that another institution might eventually come up with a better offer.

It’s done! And I know that I made the right decision from both a professional and personal standpoint.

We’re looking to arrive in OK in mid-June. Boyd and Steve, thanks for all the offers of help. Depending on how the housing situation sorts itself out (whether we rent initially, we don’t really want to buy a house on impulse and it feels like there’s little time to do much else), I might take you up on the offer to store my Avenger and Tigercat. It’s still too early to say whether that will be necessary, though. I’ll stay in touch. I have both your emails and phone numbers.

Last, it’s very true that I will miss all my friends back here in Iowa. I have been super fortunate to fall in with two great groups of guys and been a proud member of two awesome clubs in Eastern Iowa. I’m really going to miss members and friends from The Iowa City Aerohawks and the Davenport Radio Control Society. That said, I know there are great clubs all over the country, and I also appreciate that the flying scene is very active in the OKC area. Thus, I have no doubt that I’ll have a new circle of friends to hang out and fly with in the very near future!

To those of you who I communicate with offline, I forward my new contact info as soon as it becomes known!

Regards,

Noah

Hey Grover,

The pipe is 3/4" with an aluminum sleeve inside to step it down to fit the moki exhaust  O.D.
I still have to slit the end and clamp it onto the sleeve.

Awesome work Peter. Are you going to make the canopy air operated?

I have spent most of the day hunting for a small air leak in my Avenger. I divided the air operated devices into two systems. One operates the landing gears and the other operates the canopy and bomb bay doors. Unfortunately the leak is in the gear system. I also added a Electro Dynamics battery backer to the flight packs.

Hi Charlie,

Still haven't decided about the canopy actuation.

Did you stiffen up the canopy to stop it cocking or with both sides connected it's not a problem?

Having trouble getting the tail wheel to lock in the down position, I noticed this condition before installation but thought with the ram installed this would cure it. With light air pressure applied it will lock but only just. With no air pressure a few bumps and it pops up
Can't see any possible cure unless I ease some material from the joint to have it go over center more , no alternate position of ram cylinder seems to help this condition. Any one else with this issue??

I too have separated the air systems.

What was the source of the air leak?

I found that two of the fittings in the air valve were leaking a little. I removed them and put ZAP-A- GOO on the threads and reinstalled them. I then tracked down a TEE that was leaking a little. I am still hunting for another small leak. I plan to replace all of the plastic tees with the Robart brass tees too. They are expensive but may avoid a wheels up landing one day.

I found that the canopy worked OK without extra stiffening by pushing on both sides. There is a drawing of the assembly on the photo CD in the "Canopy Sections" directory. I learned that the canopy worked better at 40 to 50 PSI.

I have the same tail wheel problem on my Skyraiders. Sierra Giant Scale's tail wheels do not lock in the down position without some air in the system. It makes a mess of the fuselage around the tail wheel cutout since the tail wheel is not centered when it folds up it catches on the edges of the opening. On my second Skyraider I added some 1/32 ply around the opening to keep the balsa from getting all dented up. I also put a piece of wood across the opening to keep the tail wheel down when it is going to be sitting for a while.

Same tail wheel problem here. I happened to speak to Darrell today, he told me that if you carefully filed the ear that keeps the gear from going past center that should do the trick. Since I couldn't see what he was talking about I need to look at the gear when it operates.
If you have any questions and he'll talk you through the problem.

Good luck
Larry

I had the same problem, too... tailwheel, that is.

I did notch the aluminum bits with a file so that when fully extended, the gear mechanims reached an over-center position. Only the tiniest amount of air in the system keeps mine locked in the down position. The arrow points to the general area that was hit with a file.

That's it Larry that's all it needs just a touch off the joint to allow more over center action.

How is the painting coming along?

Thank's Noah

Noah, Larry, Peter, Charlie, I am so proud of all of you. Congrats Noah, I'm sorry, Doctor Butler, smile. Truly enjoy your new life in OK. Stay away from those whirling dust bunnys. We'll still fly together one day. Larry and Peter, as the kids say, the work of both of you is "SICK". By the way, that means great. Kids and their reverse psy. We had internet problems with Verizon but all is better now. Keep the photos coming. I'm still going to school off of you all. Aluminum wheel covers, Pete, I'm speechless. Great stuff. Chic

Hey guys,
Glad to see everyone is still kicking.
We should be spraying the 2nd color this coming week and hopefully I all be able to post some pix after the color is shot before we start masking for the 3rd color.
Took my trip to the field, way too windy for me 15mph gusts to 30mph.
I am working on the Trojan just got my gear from Sierra and can now continue constructing the wing.
Good thing I had you guys on the avenger build, it is helping me tremendously on this build.

Hope everyone is good, Noah I wish you the best at the new position and they are very lucky to get someone of your stature and outgoing personality
