How did you 'roll' the bead around the gunners seat?  Nice treatment and I've squeezed alot of rivets in my day but never seen any that small.  I'd love to know your source.

Added, what gage of sheet metal (steel or alum) did you use?

So may questions, so little time.

Okay Peter,
After saying again that your work is 2nd to none... and after seeing the final product I'm getting dozen applications to knitting anonymous for those of us who can only strive and fall way short of your craftmanship...
Noah, I think Peter has raised the bar to such a high level that Charlie may just have to build another beast to give him a run for his money.. my build buddy and I are so far removed from his skills that we have ordered 2 dozen snap together models that we will build while babbling and drooling over Peters photos...
On another note, we are making a few minor tweaks to the beast and will do another engine run up right after Xmas, the club is dying to see the maiden flight and so am I as my buddy is a bit squeamish about it

Ray,
The rivets are from my local hobby shop 1/16" shaft but I have purchased even smaller from Micro Fasteners in brass.
The rolled edge of the seats is a fake-out, it is actually a piece of aluminum tube slit and applied over the edge.
All the aluminum is .020" thick.

Noah,
Charlie does something I could never do;  design these things;  boggels the mind.
I need you to come up here and show me how to fly this thing, you are the only one with Moki / Avenger experience.

Larry,
Too cold.

Chic,
Were are you?

Charlie,
Thanks.

Well said, Peter!

Charlie's effort and talent are highlighted by every single aspect of his Avenger plans, accessories and wood kit.

It's an extraordinary model. I'm so glad that I decided to pick up the plans and accessories off RCU from Chris in Wisconsin!

Keep at those Avengers, guys!

Merry Xmas everyone. Thanks Noah. Take good care of that family of yours in your new digs. How many classes are you teaching? Peter, I'm ready to sell my Avenger, your stuff is so very good. But I am going to press on. The new wings for the DAWG are done and mounted. Should have them glassed and primered this week. Then back to the TBF. Chic

Merry Xmas gang. Chic, maybe we can find someone to buy 2 Avengers for the price of one
Weather has been relatively warm here, but the winds have been blowing with gusts upto 50-60 mph...
We are going to start the engine on the beast in a couple of weeks and get some more time running it up, will keep you posted.

I miss my childhood Christmas'.   Priceless memories that come to the fore when I throw in the DVD of the home movies my Dad had the forethought to take and Walgreens to make.

At the ripe age of 63, I've lots to be thankful for.  Biggest is watching , sometimes from afar, the Grand childgren vengefully attack the gifts under the tree.

Peter , thanks for the tip on the metal trim about your seats.   I linked up to the link you provided for small rivets.

An update on my Avenger is...still a box of wood with the plans.   Seems my 1/3 scale Fleet is coming along but not as fast as I'd like.  Sometimes I go to work when needed but I have my old 1/4 scale Fleet back and it is getting re-radioed and new fuel tank.   I hope to have it ready for a flyin in Florida in mid Feb.

When the big fleet is done, rest assured, my TBF will commence.

Chic, sorry to hear of your father's passing. Truly sorry. My dad passed away this year, so I know. Better days ahead.

Jim, looks like you're in the final assembly/finishing stages... show us some more pictures when you get a chance.

Peter... wow! Great scheme, too!

All the best,

Noah

Sorry, again, not clearly thinking. To my Avenger friends, I lost my Father over the Xmas holiday. I announced his passing on the Bird Dog build on RCU but not here. Noah and Pete, I truly thank you for your kind words. I'm angry, he died in my arms. He had 4 weeks after being diagnoised with liver cancer. Another WWII Vet gone. They say 1,000 die per day, how can there be that many left? Thanks guys. I'll be back when I can. Chic

Chic, really sorry to hear about your dad!!! My deepest condolences bro. My dad is also a WWII vet and doing ok at 88. Things will take time, as you know, to settle down etc. I'll be looking for you to be back on your project sooner than later and God Bless.

My friend builds Dauntless in Atlantic colors. I want to build an enemy aircraft. Do you know, which Axis fighters and units could met this Dauntless or Avengers?

Looks real good.
I have used Klass Kote as a clear coat but not for normal colors.
I love it, easy to spray and it looks great.

Cheers and Happy New Year.

Good question!

I know that a Dauntless was shot down outside Bodoe in northern Norway. It came from USS Ranger doing a raid in the West-Fjord.

There were Fw-190's, Bf-109's and 110's in Norway at the time.

Search for Ranger here;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_SBD_Dauntless

There is even a picture of a Dauntless over Bodoe at this page. I mention the raid because there was many axis fighters in "Festung Norwegen".

Not a big change meeting axis fighters out at sea. Perhaps a Fw 200 only.

If you check out USS Ranger;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Ranger_%28CV-4%29

And you can read the following;
"A second attack group from Ranger—consisting of 10 Grumman TBF Avenger torpedo bombers and six Wildcats—destroyed a German freighter and a small coastal ship, and bombed a troop-laden transport. Three of the aircraft were lost to anti-aircraft fire. On the afternoon of 4 October, Ranger was located by three German aircraft; her combat air patrol shot down two of the enemy planes and chased away the third."

So....Dauntless, Wildcats and Avhengers, meeting axis fighters, which would be from JG 5. JG 5 had both Fw 190's and 109's.

Hi Kwik, thank you for the link.

JG 5 Eismeer, in the name are operations over the sea.
I didn´t know, that USN operated in this part of the Atlantic, so thanks for this information. I thought that they operated in the central part and through the Gibraltar in the Mediterranean Sea.
I think, that the battles fighter vs. fighter weren´t very often.
I also know about the V/KG 40, this unit had FW-200 and Ju-88 as a long- distance fighters. The British 311st Squadron very often met Ju-88 over the Bay of Biscay. They had B-24 but the Ju-88 was very unpleasant opponent.
Something about the V/KG 40 is in the Chris Goss´s book Bloody Biscay.
