I think that was published in RCM.

The Honker is RCM plan #529 by Dave Thornburg published in June 1973 issue of RC Modeler magazine. I think it was Hobby Shack (now Hobby People) that had a foam wing version of that in the mid 70's.

This is the link to the plan:
http://www.rcmmagazine.com/store/store-plans-catalog-tem.html?item=plans:PL-529&sid=0001L5zltO9j3N8rSU82827

but I have never had any luck with RCM links as it takes me to their store page and I have to search for it anyway so the link may do you no good. They list the price as $9 but then say each plan is $2 higher than the catalog lists so I gather it is $11 but that could have changed too!

The RCM description is listed on their web site as:
36" span, 252 sq. in., .049, 2 ch., built-up sheet balsa and plywood, one sheet 19" x 29".

Hope that was what you were looking for.

Jim

The $9.00 is, I believe, correct. The 2.00 increase applies to the last printed catalog. I expect they will not print an updated version, but rather include a addendum with the newer pricing if you purchase their catalog.

Unless you're set on a Honker, I would suggest you consider the Honker Rocket. It uses the same wing and stab, but has a sleeker fuselage and redesigned rudder. Building diffuculty and cost is essentially the same as the original Thornburg design. The Rocket was used for a time in 1/2A class racing and the plans include the option of adding ailerons - A/E (one aileron for the bank and yank racing layout).

The Honker Rocket is plan 832 - priced at $9.00 like the Honker.

Does that use a foam wing too? It says the same wing but not sure if that has a built up or a foam wing. Where is the wing available these days? My Honker wings got melted with the use of contact cement so have been watching for a source for new wings for it.

All three original Thornburg designs, the Honker, Honker Rocket and Honker Bipe, used a built up wing made from one sheet of 4" tapered stock and a 3/8" x 3" sheet giving a 7" chord. I kinow the HONKER was kitted for a period of time, but have never seen the kit version and don't know the kit's wing construction.

The original wing construction uses a butt joint to glue the two sheets together, but does take some time to plane and sand it to an airfoil shape. The airfoil is a Jedelsky.

I built the Honker and the Honker Bipe from RCM plans. Both flew great. I had a Black Widow on the Honker and a ST.23 on the Bipe. Flew them forever!

The yellow one in the picture above is about 20 years old. I flew it for a long time on a Black Widow, then swapped a Big Mig .061 C/L onto it. The NORVEL made quite an improvement in performance. I used the NORVEL C/L tank mount because the hole pattern matched the BW - it was thru bolted to blind nuts. The NORVEL tank did not give much of a run time, so I retrofitted a Fuji tank internally. I usually get 7 to 9 minutes. Flew it last weekend and it has just come off the charger for tomorrow.

I used to fly those all the time as a kid (the kit) and hey flew very well for rudder and elevator. I also flew one with FOX 15 and strip ailerons very fast back then but also landed very fast. it was about 35 ounces back then.

I have admired the Honker's for years.
Andrew, does the Honker fly well inverted with that Jedelsky wing?

Bob

Mine does not - probably due to pilot skill. Mine is R/E only with quite a bit of dihedral. When inverted, it tends to roll out just as soon as a wingtip drops, so while I can get short straight inverted flight, as soon as I attempt to turn or over correct, it rolls over.

If you built the A/E version with less dihedral, I think it would fly inverted without too much difficulty.

BTW, I put about 20 minutes on mine last evening.
