Looks like you did a good job, now just get some 3m speedtape and cover those seams around your removable engine cover.

Cut down the header - The neighborhood got real quite......

Actually the muffled pipe gave me about 300-400 more rpm at 23,800 static. Which is what FreakingFast mentioned.
Wearing my hearing muffs standing behind the engine I could not tell any difference in sound
I guess I need 28db muffs and 30db earplugs.

Hey FreakingFast is this on par with your engine, I thought you mentioned 24,500?

My offset header has 2 - 45degree bends and I'm about 1.5" beyond the 9.5" back from center of piston, so I can creep up on it.

Update,
Paint is curing - still need to shoot the blacked out canopy.
Will try to fine tune the header/pipe this weekend.
Maiden next weekend may be a possibility.

Your in the ballpark Rob. Yes, on that day I saw 24,500 solid peaked, I havent tacked it in a while. A muffled#1250 or quiet pipe#1050 are so close when each is adjusted, its not worth mentioning I run the muffled, it's cheaper and I can hear the engine at a distance better. What plug and fuel are you using? I hope it has some caster in it. Is that a pressure fitting on the pipe near the coupling?

LOL! With a un-muffled tuned pipe, running 30%, turning 24K......The neighborhood did'nt get quiet, you and every dog in the area just lost your hearing!!!!!!!!

The liberals in SF must have thought the world was coming to an end, I can’t believe they didn’t call the cops. LOL

You can point out to them that glow fuel is organic and that the hypersonic sound waves kill cancer cells, stimulate the thyroid, and provide a medium to communicate with the dead. Then those lisping liberal arts majors will leave you alone .

I've been running 15% and will inject some castor.

My muffled pipe 1250 broke at the weld yesterday - cracked all the way around and the rear "can" seperated.
The other ones I have are the non muffled pipe - the standard tuned pipe -1150.
On the same length header is 300rpm down from the muffled pipe but on a shorter header or in the air may increase?

The 1150's I have, have a pressure fitting at the thin inlet and I understand is not ideal - I believe it best to hit the fat section of the pipe but these came with 2 engines I bought used and fitting installed.

I planned my cg around the heavier muffled pipe but will run some mockups using a larger rx battery way back in the tail.....while I wait for a new 1250 pipe.

I have no problem rationalizing that my little toy airplane engine is less loud than the area code "415" Uncapped Harleys running around or even the screaming angry female lyricists band from the Lesbian bar two doors down.

Hey Pig, I'll hold that explanation in reserve, first to hang some crystals and perform moxibustion cleansing of the premises prior to another run up

Painting is Complete

Applied contol gap tape and burnished it down.
Weights of assemblies and components in ounces
Fuse - 26.5
8oz bubbless tank, tuned pipe, and mount - 4.3
Spinner, backplate, nut/washer, 7.4x8.25 prop - 2.0
Engine and header - 17.1
Rx and engine/wing screws - 1.3
Wing and gear - 24
Belly scoop and engine fairings - 1.5

Total 76.6 or 4.78lbs - This should be everything but fuel - the muffled pipe will increase about 2ozs.
As this is a "Sport Plane" and not built as a Q40 racer, I took the liberty of adding some creature comforts in the interest of servicability and ease of use. larger RX battery, RX battery switch, belly scoop is latched to allow acess to rx switch and wing bolts, and a large capacity 8oz. tank

Spoke to Dave at Mac's Products and mentioned my cracked and separated 1250 muffled pipe and he offered to reweld it no charge

I took my Ashley out today for the first time in a few months. Whooo Dogggy is it a rush!!!

I'm only running a 7.4x7.5 prop and tuning it until it hits 23.5k on the ground. I don't know what it turns in the air but it's a screamer. Once I get a little more comfortable I'll have to get some props with the correct pitch (7.8"?) but for now it's plenty fast.

It's really not that hard to fly if you use the recommended throws and CG. I'm launching it myself. I put the tail between my feet, preset the rudder 1/2 right and elevator 1/2 up. That's half the throw, not 1/2". I give it about 3/4 throttle and slide one foot out of the way. It's off in about 30' and once it's in the air it really grooves. I've only had one other plane that was as point and shoot, a Jepe Pyranha.

The biggest problem I've had is getting it back on the ground. Mostly from overshooting the runway or tip stalling making my final turn. So today I tried taking off from the downwind end of the runway. I shut the engine down about 200' up then made one or two big circles. I made my final turn about 30' up and gave myself a looooonnnnnnggggg approach. It worked like a charm. I had three flights and 2.5 decent landings. On the last one I bounced it a bit and rolled into the weeds, but the plane is fine.

BTW, it's really interesting to watch as it goes through the turns. The wing bows up about 3-4". I could clearly see it when the plane was perpendicular to me.

Wow Chris, Sounds like a kick! Thanks for the solo launching sequence!

I am tagging along with Rusty Sunday for my maiden and some other Q40 flyers for shakedown - must be some event coming up?
Will have radar guns.
I still need to fine tune my header/pipe length on saturday.
Have CG set and need to set throws and a million small details

Since I'm on the portly side of things the wing flex will make me nervous....

If you're turning 13,800 on 15% you are doing fine. Some fuels are hard to mix in extra caster. I'm not a fan of Coolpower if thats what your running. 15% nitro/18% oil Power Master or 30% heli is good stuff. Run the engine out on FAI fuel to flush out the nitro any time you plan on not running it inside of a FEW hours. These bearing are screaming and will let go very soon after they get pitted by rust, much sooner than other engines if you don't take extra care of it. I have 5 gallons thru mine and the bearings are tight and smooth and still have some cold pinch at TDC with plug out.

A cracked muffled pipe!!??? Thats a first to me, I've bounced and bent a few and never had one break. Man....you must have found one heck of a note to do that. David is a good guy, I did'nt think it would be worth trying to fix it with all the oil in the joint, tuff to get cleaned for repair, but he knows how if anyone does.

Uncapped Harleys, angry female lyricists, moxibustion......Funny Guy LOL!
