I know Roy Clough Jr. was into many things and also into very new ideas and technology but I just ran into a plan for a .060 engine called the "Little Dragon"

Anyone tried making one of these? I know there are some machinists who hang out here and knowing a little ( make that very little) about machining (had a good friend who is a great machinist and showed me some cool things) I was thinking that if the head were changed to accept the turbo plugs that O.S. has to offer it might raise the performance from whatever it had been.

Has anyone given a look into this? Or any info from the past as i have only seen the plan for this engine.

Robert

Robert,

I seem to remember the name "Little Dragon" from a model mag MANY years ago. If I remember correctly, it was a small diesel used as a High School shop project. I remember the pics showed one or more of them running. Don't know if they made it to a plane or not.

Let us know how it goes.

George

PS. Additional thought...if it IS a diesel perhaps someone in the "Everything Diesel" section may be more familiar with it. Several of them make their own diesels.

This was also the foundation of several different engines, including ProBroJoe's found here:

Yes, that is the one. Thanks for the additional info! good reading for later.

George, the plan did not show a diesel head.

Yes, I read that. Must have been a follow-up engine. Looked similar - but then it's been over 50 years since I read the article.

George, you may be thinking of the EZE engines that were based on the Little Dragon. All of these engines are very nice, but Joe found that moving the wristpin closer to the top of the piston releases much more HP. Enough to make them more than viable for use on the front of a flying model!

Hmmm...

Actually I was hoping something could be gained by this plan as Roy Clough Jr. really had it going on upstairs. If nothing comes out of this then nothing will have been lost.

Anyone feel compelled to play around some with this? I can shoot them with a pdf of this article and plan if anyone is interested.

Robert

Hello Build light

I am always interested in things like this. Not that i am ever likely to get around to building it but I like to see how others do things.

Could you please send the PDF to tarquin.brooks@gmail.com

Cheers
Tarquin

Hi
I posted a whole bunch of Roy Clough PDF files over at <http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=901647&page=3> and the Little Dragon is one of them. Hope you enjoy.

Holy cow Gene, thanks for the link and the .pdf's! I now have them saved in my Roy Clough folder.

Another one of the Great Ones that I have had the pleasure of corresponding with but never met before they left us. Back when I finally got the Gyrator to fly properly and posted some pics, I got a PM from him on one of the forums and we exchanged quite a few emails. He was at least as excited about the Gyrator as I was and was very enthusiastic and complimentary. I had seen many, many of his articles through the years and I can't tell you how great it was to "chat" with him.

We talked about Cox engines quite a bit since this was soon after he'd seen my FM Tee Dee article and out of the blue he sent me a Medallion piston/cyl/throttle sleeve. It now lives on the "big prop tuned" Tee Dee (I call it the John Deere TD) and has always run great.

We got into an exchange of ideas about building a 1/2A powered charybdis and he sent me a draft version of one of his designs that he called the axe, or hatchet or some-such name. I'm looking for it now. Unfortunately I lost all the email stuff in a computer hard-drive crash...I'm hoping I didn't lose that plan as well.

Thanks again!
Milton

Milton,

I too had the pleasure of exchanging emails with Roy. I became aware of Roy's early work with developing free-flight helicopters in the late nighty's and then started to collect old magazines that had his articles in them. I later came upon his email address at Small Net. Over the next few years there were several of his articles that I could not find so I decided to contact him. Low and behold, he replied and sent me excellent photo copies of what I was missing and a typed up copy of all of his articles. I quickly converted the list of articles into a word document and then sent it back to him - he was extremely grateful for he did not have OCR software.

My mentor was the late John Burkam and up until he died, I considered him the granddaddy of modern-day r/c helicopters. After collecting many of Roy Clough early articles, I changed my mind as to who the real granddaddy was!

The last exchange was that he was writing a book that would contain sever new designs. I wish he could have completed it. I never had the pleasure of meeting him.

Gene, as a matter of fact, that is where I saw this plan and the others.
Thanks!

Robert

A note to all who have downloaded any of the Roy Clough PDF plans that I posted. I found that the majority of Roy's plans were not to scale and or missing information. Roy often used others to draw up his plans. I have taken the liberty to correct as much as I can and severl were converted into a cad drawing so that I could correct and clarify. They were then converted to a PDF file.
