In all reality this subject may should be in the AMA forum, however no one posted about the restriction just closing in the Denver area, and because so few visit the AMA, I will post it here for better distribution. If a moderator wishes it moved or whatever, then so be it. BTW I added the bold.

AMA Website ref. FAA Notams.

http://www.modelaircraft.org/membership/clubs/notams.aspx

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued Notice to Airman (NOTAM) involving a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) for the Minneapolis, MN area during the Republican National Convention beginning on September 1, 2008 and ending on Septmber 4, 2008. The TFR prohibits most aero operations, including model aircraft and model rocketry between 12p and 11:59p CDT on September 1, and from 4p to 11:59p CDT on September 2, 3, 4. You can view the online version of the TFR by visiting http://tfr.faa.gov/save_pages/detail_8_1542.html and also http://tfr.faa.gov/save_pages/detail_8_1196.html

Hoss,

that is interesting that you should post that. It might be interesting to note that every presidential or VIP TFR that I have seen has a restriction on model aeronautics within the hot zone. This is usually a 30NM radius with the center located on some VOR radial some distance from the VOR. I have included a link to a current TFR for San Antonio. http://tfr.faa.gov/save_pages/detail_8_5933.html

TFRs affect me on the job on occasion so I usually know about them. For one presidential TFR, our club field was within the 30NM radius. I brought it up to one of the club leaders as something that should be addressed; unfortunately it was ignored. I would hate for model aeronautics to have a problem because modelers are violating TFRs, however most people don't know about them. More importantly though, is that the information is not sent to the modeling community. I don't ever get a standard briefing before I go to fly models.

Doug

Thats exactly the problem. Most modelers don't know about them.

We had to shut down two fields during the Super Bowl a couple of years ago but both clubs were approached about it.

I dont think the FAA is really serious about shuting down models during these events
if they were they would set up a system so that all model plane operators would
have to know about restrictions, I think they just include models in the advaisory
just cover the bases in case of some conflict, Besides at the current time the FAA
has no way monitor all the models out there anyway.

I can assure you, for things like the Super Bowl and conventions they are VERY serious.

Air Force One is surrounded by a 30 mile floating TFR any time its in the air, that I don't think they worry about as much.

I just posted something in the AMA forum having just learned of this. Our field falls within the 30 mile range of the RNC in St Paul.

We just learned of it through a clubmember, shouldn't someone at the AMA or elsewhere notify clubs of these things??

We are about 20 miles away, should we close the field down for the week?

Dave it says 12 noon until 11.59 PM. Set your alarm early. Besides it's over Thurs.
