Anybody have any experience with the GMS 120??? I am thinking of putting it in my nitromodels 60 p51 for local warbird raceing here in SoCal. It is the biggest size engine i can put in for my wing area about 745 Sq. In.

I hope someone answers. I am intrigued by this engine. Only problem is, when will they be available again? Maybe soon now that the Olympics are over.

they are good engines. back when they were out there very close to the webra speed 120 in power. one of the guys in our club has one. Its been juiced up some but I think it spins a 15x7 APC at 11,000-11,500 on the ground. this seems to be the best prop for larger 700 SQ planes. for the smaller ones that are faster a 14x10 might be a good choice. still not very strong as you would think but both being ringed they have lots of cylinder/piston friction so they dont like to rev much.

The OS 140 is very strong but still an low rpm engine close to the YS170 in power if not a bit more.
webra also makes a 160 too. In this size range the mentor 170 would be the best engine and the strongest.
The Jett 120 spins an 16x8 at 9,700-9,800. you could talk to dubb to see if he would make a 120LX for ya.

I had one and I don't remember to land decently my plane with the engine running. I tested everything: fuel leaks, add a pump, change propeller... and nothig good came from that engine. Look at the price and remenber that you get what you pay. So: put some $$ in plus and buy a nice OS or Supertigre 2300; they are veeeeeeery good and trustables.

My experience with the GMS 120 was very bad. I'm a pretty positive, self-actualising kind of a guy and not one to crap on and on about a negative experience but this one still has me really angry. So, for one time and one time only, here goes.

If you've got better things to do than fiddle with a cranky engine that won't transition or run consistently then avoid it like the plague. In the end I figure there was over 100 years of good solid modelling experience in the guys around my club (one of the biggest in Australia) who tried to help me get this thing running right. It got to a point where it was running reasonably enough for a flight, but the tune changed completely in the air. After two circuits I came in to land and it quit on approach. My Ultimate biplane turned into a brick and hit hard. The damage took hours to fix after spending hours (and cash - 5 litres of 10% fuel, several glow plugs, three different props, and an on-board glow system) researching the net and trying to get it to run right. Someone suggested it would take considerably more running in because of the Dykes ring configuration, but I was running out of airplanes and I had to cut my losses.

I sold it a month ago (with a complete description of the problems so that the guy who bought it knew what he was getting in to) on that online auction site for $100 and was happy to be done with it.

Thats it, I'm done.

Joel
