Okay, so I want to start building those old-time free-flight rubber powered models from Dumas, Guillows, Peck-Polymers, and possibly AG Industries which have a wing span around a foot or so and turning them into indoor Infra-Red controlled two channel models. I'm wondering which RTF units on the market are best to "gut" for this perpose So far I've found several offerings with the double pusher or double tractor set up where the motor speeds are mixed to provide steering control also found one offering that is a single pusher motor with rudder set up. So basically it looks like anything with a twin set up is pretty well covered with several options to pick from for canablizing RTF units and one possibility for the single motor rudder set up.

So first question off the batt ~~ What is considered the best models of the ARF units to canablize for their guts ???

And secondly, are the motors used on these units simple brushed motors that all I have to do is snip, reverse, and reconnect the motor wires to turn pushers into tractors and vica-versa ???

Lastly, I only found one unit that was single motor and active rudder set up any one know of others out there with active rudder control unit rather then just twin motors with differential for steering ???

welcome to RCU we always need more builders around here!

the AirHogs AeroAce line of planes are your best deal for the twin motor planes. they're very well proven, tons of mods and past home-made planes with their guts. the motors are just coreless brushed motors, but you wont have to cut and reverse the wires to go from a pusher to tractor, you just have to pull the left prop off, flip it over, and put it on the right motor (do the same with right prop too, of course).

the Silverlit SingleWing/Fastlane Arrow is ideal if you want a rudder/throttle type system. they usually sell for only 20 bucks at toys r us and are worth the price. AirHogs also has one with nearly identical electronics called the U-Build It that would do the trick too. there are also some living room flyers like the AirHogs Nano Hawk/Silverlit PalmZ, AirHogs Cyclone, Tomi AeroSoarer, and a few others that are IR, 2 channel, very lightweight, and are rudder/throttle controlled. due to their small size and actuator, they can be harder gear to install than the others, but for lightweight, you cant beat them (to use these parts though, your plane will also have to be quite light). these indoor flyers are usually all IR, all the other micro RTFs (except some helis) are RC.

if you want some RTF guts that have more precision or channels, look for a 2 or 3 channel helis like the MicroMosquito or FireFly. these are usually twin rotor helis, sometimes with a tail motor. they run two motors, one per rotor, and control them with thrust differential like the AeroAce gear. if you find one with the tail motor (and its pointing up) then you could use that as an elevator. these helis are usually fully proportional on the throttle channel, and usually at least semi-proportional on the tail channel. the AeroAces and others are usually only semi proportional on the throttle and "bang/bang" on the steering.

if you do a search here in this forum for the planes i listed above you're bound to find some past threads with info. the Micro RTF forum at RCGroups has some threads too. lots of gathered info here though, so if you've got a question, someone here will have an answer.
