I was given an Echo SRM 1501 trimmer and wanted to see if any of you folks could help me with a conversion.

I don't know what cc it is-perhaps a 21.2 if I had to guess. At any rate, I would like to try and convert this engine (if it is a good candidate) with a larger carb, aftermarket muffler and perhaps EI if there is a very cheap and complete system. I would appreciate any and all help with this one-the only conversion I have done to date was a Homelite 33cc which was very easy. I really dont know where to turn for parts and which specific ones I would need for an Echo.

Thanks!

I just converted an Echo-seems to be a great engine. Mine is a 25 or 26cc so I don't know if the crank is the same or not. The hardest part is the prop hub-I made my own on my lathe. It has 8mm crankshaft threads with a 9 degree taper. You can use the stock muffler, just braze some steel tubes in it and cover the existing outlet. I used an 11mm walbro carb and sanded out the plastic intake to 5/8 with a drum sander on a dremel (DO NOT DRILL IT!!!) I'm also using a bcma ignition, but I think he's out of stock. Here's a link to a site with ignitions. Seems to be a good deal for everything including the plug and switch harness for around $90 shipped. http://syssaaircraft.com/gas_engine_ignitions.html

Maybe someone else can point you to pre-made parts????

If the Echo numbers hold true it may be 15cc, Great engine but hardly enough cc's for the power to weight ratio. Best bet is pull the cylinder and check the bore and stroke. Av8tor may have done one of these.

Thanks for the link-I will check more into that. From what I just found on an online Echo manual, its states that the SRM 1501 is in fact a 21.2cc engine. I guess I will have to tear it down and see what everything looks like. Hopefully, I can find my way through this as I don't have access to a lathe and so on. I will try and post a couple of pics when I get a basic strip down.
