Now consider the scale (not sure of the scale level but it was huge) model B52, with 8.. count em... 8 turbines. There is a thread here somewhere about the one that crashed in England. Consider the cost of that crash!!

He was sponsored so not out a whole lot personally. He also crashed a second one before BMFA told him to stop building them.

They have a BIG jet weekend in Jackson,Ms every year with a big bunch of jets there. Last time I was there they lined them all up on the runway centerline during lunch break. Combined estimated value of all the planes exceeded 1 million dollars.

You know I'm hearing a lot of fun being made here about price. Ask the guys that fly 40% gas planes if they pay to much for their planes. Most of what I am hearing here is from people that haven't moved from 40 size. You fly what you can afford. The fun level isn't based on the price. There's always room for every type in this hobby. Please don't make fun of someone that has the ability to own and fly the higher end of this hobby. It took me 20 years to buy my first jet.
If you can't afford to crash it, don't fly it. Dennis

Here's what looks to be a good entry level jet:

http://btemodels.com/r54.html

It is definitely on my to-do list for the future. The cost I can deal with but I want to get just a little more confident in my flying.

When I say "entry level" that means for JETS, not airplanes in general. You'd want to be a pretty good propeller pilot before even thinking about it. You'd also want to be absolutely confident in your assembly and set up skills. One mistake and you'll not only lose a plane but you could do serious property or bodily damage as well.

Some of the new electric ducted fans are kind of interesting too. Most are still for advanced pilots but the cost is less and they appear to be a lot of fun. I may try the little T-45 from Electric Jet Factory.

We have a guy at the field that flys jets. He has one that has a thrust vector setup and what he can do with that is trully amazint. I saw him doing loops that looked if the wing tips were on an axel, the plane was litterly looping so tightly the there didn't appear to be any difference top to bottom, edge to edge, the plane just tumbled. The last time I saw him out, he came down the runway inverted at full power with the rudder about a foot off the tarmac. "I got a little lower than I planned" he said after.

Our runway is 500ft of asphalt with no close in interference. He crosses the fence off the end of the runway at about 10 ft elevation and touches down about 5/8 down the runway. The thing stops like you wouldn't believe.

His is not that loud. A couple of the 40 two strokes at the field would drown it out. What sound thre is though is very scale sounding. Smells just like LAX too.

Next life for me.

I was going to order my first jet from Tower Hobbies today until I found out they don't take food stamps!

See the comment that hungryandbroke made is what I'm talking about. Is he trying to be funny or is his handle the truth? Tower Hobbies and food stamps. Give me a break. If you what to have a serious discussion about jets in the hobby or 40% gas and want to learn something OK. If all some one can do is make snide remarks and poke fun at part of this hobby because they can't do it, then go elsewhere. This a beginners forum for new people and is a good place to learn more about all aspects of RC. Some of you will move to the higher levels and some won't, only time will tell which one you are. Dennis

AMA does require brakes. So does common sense.

Dennis,

I do not see how the food stamp comment so out of line. it is obviously a joke, not really very funny, but I do not think it is mean spirited and aiming to inslult anyone.

this is the beginner forum and I think we beginners are just like "wow jets are really cool" like just about anything fast and loud. very few beginners are seriously considering flying a jet soon.

Any one who can be in New England in mid August ,owes it to himself to attend the NEW ENGLAND JET RAlly at Gardner,Ma.
Jet pilots from all over the eastern U.S. & Canada, are represented . You may visit the pit area and speak with pilots who live to fly these beautifull aircraft.
Watch RCU next summer for info. AWSOME!

And I'll bet most beginners don't even know that you have to be Certified to even fly a jet.

Certified?? What certification?? Are you referring to the AMA waiver for operation of a Jet??

Ken

I watched couple of turbine jets for the first time Memorial Day weekend. I was impressed that the guys were very well organized. There was one brake failure and the airplane ended up maybe a hundered yards past the end of the runway. They are fast and not as noisy as I expected them to be. I was glad of the opportunity to watch, as that was an aspect of model aviation I had not seen.

All I know is that last year there were 5 Futaba Reps at our club with 7 jets along with 37-40% planes and they were telling me you have to be certified in order to fly jets.
