ok so I took er out for a run today and ran through a complete tank and it was working perfectly. then after the run i took a look at the spur gear and its starting to strip again!? its just barely starting but i noticed it mostly on one side. And i also noticed that if i rotate it with my finger it meshes with the gears perfectly on one side and the other side( thats a bit stripped now) is a bit tighter. which seems to me like its obviously the shaft that the spur is on is bent. and it is because when i rotate it and look closely there is a bit of side to side movement in the spur. so i guess ill have to pick up a new shaft now, man even though the parts are not that much money it really adds up. Ive had it for like less than a week and already im having to go through parts lol

Make sure its not your slipper pad on the back of the spur, ive had that disentigrate and pile up on one side, making it look like the shaft was bent.

so i know this post is a bit old now already. But just figured id toss in an update. Put in the new shaft the other day and shes running perfectly since. I have already probably run it through about a gallon of fuel yesterday and today and the gear has not even started to strip. So i guess i solved the problem and got the mesh right. Im so excited. Its a blast to drive. Come to think about it.. im gonna go run er through a couple more tanks right now...lol

ok so im really having troubles with this thing. i put a new spur gear in yesterday and within half an hour of driving, stripped another one! thats like 4 in the last week. Its really annoying. Wat could be the problem? i set the mesh and everything on the spur perfectly. I do notice that the gear on the motor. ( clutch bell? not sure wat its called) is a loose. But im not sure how that could be the problem, and i think that is supposed to be a bit loose. Any ideas or hints would be awesome

Check the motor mount and engine plate for cracks, those are the #1 culprit for stripped spur gears. If not your clutch shoes might be heating up the clutch bell soo much that the spur just melts, but this is kinda rare...

ya its not melting. But i notice that the spur gear is not stripping the whole width of it. Theres a small part on the back end of the gear that still has gear on it. the clutch bell must not be rotating on the whole gear. Could that be a problem? im not sure how it would be but..

Not rare at all. the Savage has a junk clutch.

1.0 springs and Mugen shoes are what I prescribe for this patient. And a Duratrax clutch tool will save your fingers

The shaft had nothing to do with it...............my 2spd and 3spd shafts wobble. Never had any spur issues due to it. The main problem you had was not setting the mesh right. Stripping gears is always a indication of a too tight mesh. The gears get hot from too much friction and eventually the plastic melts and the teeth "strip" away. BBs "click method" is how I have always set mine and it works great. Setting the mesh with paper can be a bit troublesome as you can still end up with a improper mesh.

If it's not stripping the entire gears, then that means that the mesh is too loose.

Or the HPI shoes that already come with two sets of springs He should also get a vented CB...the temp. difference is unbelievable.

While removing the bolt that holds the CB, I just put a death grip on the flywheel with my hand, get a proper sized phillips and press hard while turning and off it goes.

What's this "click method?"
