Hi,

I have a Axe CP and i can only hover for 2 minutes with the 650mAh batterie. So i bought a new batterie and it’s not better, now i can barely lift off the heli. Nothing else have been change. So here my questions :

How can i check if a motor drain too much current ? How many Ampere the motor suppose to take ?

How can i test if a ESC work normally ?

Thanks a lot for your help.

How long have you had your Axe?? Generally every thread posted like this the first usual suspect is the motor being worn out....

Hi impactplayr,

Don't know exactly how many hours have this heli, bought it used a month ago... And it's exactly what i want to know if the motor is being worn out...... How can i test the motor ?

And i'm not sure if it's only the motor who drain too much current, but the heli feel strange in the air.... difficult to have a stable hover, lack of tail autoritie (by the way, i fly a nitro 50 for the past 2 years, but i'm new to electric) ...

It's for this reason that a want to test the motor alone and/or the ESC before change parts...

Wich test i can do to be sure ?

Thanks a lot for your help...

before you do all of that, throw a pitch gauge to it and make sure you didn't knock something out.

I'd make sure the mechanical is right before troubleshooting the electronics (but I'm stupid when it comes to electricity)

I burned my motor out yesterday. It was flying fine than it would start to really bounce up and down. I noticed mine starting to smell that wonderful smell of bruning electronic parts. I ran a couple more betteries through it and I had to be at 75% throttle before it would even try to lift off. I just replaced all my electronics so I know those are good. Maybe the smoke that was coming out of the motor was a hint it iwas going out . I maybe have 20 flights on the original motor so they don't last long at all.

Hi thestratcat,

I havedouble check the mechanics and everything is OK.

And copey70 you did only 20 flights with the original motor ???

Is it the normal life time of the original motor for everyone ?

Thanks...

The reported motor life thus far confuses me. First let me say my Axe is the first RC Heli I have owned since the early '80s and the first I could fly (o.k. hover). I got the Axe in early Jan. from TH for Xmas.

I have since replaced all the electronics (complete separates) except the stock motors and the wire leads. I have about 35 hours, yes 35 hours, hovering with the stock motors to date. While I am now doing rudimentary FF and vertical climbs, that has only been for the last 10 or so hours.

I have 4-910 mah batts. and 2 chargers so I can fly 8-12 packs a day if I try hard on the weekends. Usually I fly 4 per day.

I am limiting the flights to about 6 min. each based on the 80% discharge "rule" as per my charger's recharge data.

I guess the motors would be stressed more with even just scale flying, let alone 3D, so my case may be atypical.

I do have a spare for each (main, tail) and will replace both when one fails. Then I will be able to tell how the motor performance has "faded" over time.

I hope the replacements aren't in someway inferior and fail sooner!

Hi r_william,

Thanks a lot for your post... glad to know that the original motor can do all this flight time !!!

Yea,

I had to check my numbers twice (battery use/charging log) to believe it myself. It's actually 36.6 hours as of today.

I was then humbled by how much "stick time" I have vs. my flying skills. Not to be too self-critical, but I am not comfortable with nose-in hovering yet.

Anyway, I said I was humbled not discouraged!

Later... RWW

my axe cp at times seems to jump at times example at a 4ft hover it just like jumps up makes it harder to fly then it should fly. could it be that i use a nimh battery.

In regards to the jumping:

If you are using the stock radio it is notorious for this.

There is one other possibility and that is the slide block and center hub are binding.
There can be mold flashing from the manufacturing process and that can cause jumping.

You'll need to disassemble them to inspect and correct by using a razor knife to carefully trim away the flashing.

There may be other causes but that has been my experience.

It is difficult to measure motor performance without buying more equipment. With regards to your question about how much current it should draw, I measured my fully loaded (full throttle, full pitch, tied down!!) main motor to draw 11.75 amps at 11.5 volts (I'm flying the lipo version). I measured this using a AstroFlight Wattmeter.

I'm just about ready to post a thread with most of the stock performance and "deduced" setup parameters. Hopefully it can be a basis of comparison for you and others.

Just to add my motor life two cents... I've got probably 50 flights with a duration of more than 6 minutes on my original stock motor.

Good luck

Mine jumped quite often before the Bell/Hiller upgrade. The slop in the head and in the servos are to blame. The B/H has a second linkage which eliminates the slop in the head, and upgraded servos will improve performance as well.

How does adding more linkages and associated levers, etc. reduce slop?

But aside from that... my jumping was 100% ELIMINATED when I replaced the Tx, Rx and Sxs. So to be fair, I'm not sure which it was.

The B/H linkage goes directly from the blade grip to the swashplate where as the other linkages went from swashplate to flybar links to stablizer control hub to see saw to blade grips. There's fewer points to connect. Plus, like you said, the arms on the stock servos can be moved up and down slightly (gear train slop internally) and the "z" bend linkages are not the tigtest in the servo arms either. It all adds up. Grab the blades and rotate to higher or lower pitch, everything moves without the servo gears moving on the hiller head.
