Crash- I don't think this thread will ever fully meet it's demise. I still love to read all the comments here, I just do not post very often. Jeff is correct-a-mundo, I am a total lurker. Reasons other than not posting (other than my Rock Crawler..Haha) are simply that I can't afford the heli habit at this time. It got to the point where parts just give up for no apparent reason, even with no crashed and newer components. Plain frustraed!! There is never ever ever an end to financing a heli....My Crawler...I built it. I roll it down 70 foot embankments, beat the living crud out of it and take it hiking for miles and mile(8 miles once, and still on the same battery). It never freaking breaks. LOL You also know by now that building sh*t is my passion and where it's at. Sure I like to play, with my Crawler, I feel rewarded a bit more...Yesterday, I cut my first CAD designed frames for my FJ40(last day of school too ) out of 1/4 delrin!! Can I just say how much I love machine shop?

I'LL BE BACK(whatcha got, a dead cat in there?(FU a-hole)(Sarah Conner?))....Just not yet!

Peaces of heli...

Z.....everyone is feeling the pinch. I tried to do a loop twice, that hit me for $30 in parts ($15 each crash).....I'll back off that for a while. Right now, I'm restoring one of my old F16's because I got an intake comming, it's ll it needs (bare bones kits are back ordered forever). Been doung a lot of nose in work with a good deal of success, that's about all on this end.

I like the idea of crashing and then not having to repair for a week before flying again... Aslo running for several hours on a battery sounds good too... LOL For now... I LURK.... which reminds me... I've been out from under my rock for far to long now... have to scurry back... cheers bro

Hi guys!

I've learned from my mistakes, if I try to read the whole forum by the time I get to the end it's dead & gone! I'm a real slow reader.

I was wondering if you guys could recommend a good but inexpensive motor for the EXI450? I've been looking at the Alpha 400 but it seems to good to be true price wise. I just got the EXI last week. Been struggling with a Walkera 4-1 trying to learn orientation. Thought I should go outside to get some space but the 4-1 is all over the place in a breeze. I thought the 450 would let me practice outside. No 3d stuff in the foreseeable future just the basics for now.

Thanks for any advice you'd care to share. And I promise I'll go back & read this whole thing!

Chuck

Crash, I think that you meant 12 tooth pinion? I am figuring out my heli a little at a time. I bought it with a motor already in it and I never knew what KV the motor is so, when I finnally got a tach I was shocked to find that I only had a headspeed of 2000 rpm! Apparently it was setup for 4c batteries. So I installed a seventeen tooth pinion and raised the headspeed to 2600 and what a difference! Way more performance and more stable too. I'm going to have to get a new motor or some four cell batteries.
What headspeed are you guys running?

Lol.... Lurker you are ! I've been busy for awhile now, so not to much excitement going on here. Glad to see ya check in...

Chuck ~

Good to see ya lurkin' over here. Like I told ya in the Struggling Thread, Crash is the expert with these EXI's and he'll steer ya in the right direction.

Babyhuey ~

I like to have my headspeed for the 450 at least around 3,000 rpms. But that's just my preference. Everyone's different.

~ Jeff

That's when you stand the heli on it's tail and go back and forth from up right and upside down as fas as you can. It's not a complete back flip but about half way. I don't think that I can explain it any better but you can see them on youtube.

Babyhuey ~

Yeah you probably have a big improvement now that the headspeed is bumped up. Most guys in my readings run there wood blades safely at 2600-2800 rpms. I know there's a buttload of guys even pushing 3000 rpms on there Align 325 pro woodies and have never had a prob. If you were curious of what others are running there headspeed at.

http://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=144904&highlight=headspeed

Here's my motor that I'am running in my 450 below. From the manufacturer, (Innovative Designs - Scorpion Motors) they give some good advice for headspeeds for your level of flying. Kinda interesting...

The next most popular motor is the HK-2221-6 motor. This is THE motor for people that want maximum
performance from their 450 class helicopter. Use of this motor requires a minimum of a 25C 2200mah
battery and a 55 amp ESC, and carbon fiber blades are a MUST. Don’t even try running wood blades with
this motor! The Scorpion 60 amp Heli Edition ESC is also a very good choice for this motor for pilots that
want an ESC that has a 6.0 volt BEC circuit for more speed and torque from their servos. Here are a couple
common set-ups for this motor:

HK-2221-6 with a 10 tooth pinion, providing a head speed of around 3150 RPM: This is a good place to
start with this motor. You have all the power needed for just about anything except for the most extreme 3D
type flying.

HK-2221-6 with an 11 tooth pinion, providing a head speed of around 3400 RPM: This will get you all the
power that most helicopters can handle, and will allow for any type of 3D flying out there.

If you do try to go to a 12 tooth pinion with this motor, you will get a head speed approaching 3700 RPM.
This is bordering on insanity, but some pilots will try it. There are only a couple helicopters on the market
that will stay together with this kind of head speed, but for those that venture into this realm of power, the
sky is the limit!

I was out in the yard adjusting my tail and hatcam just the other day, and I run the 11t pinion which is around 3400-3500 rpms. I can push around 8 minutes of flight time.

Cheers,

~ Jeff

Thanks Jeff,
I quit on the 325 pro woodies right after a set of them exploded and damaged my heli and almost me too! That was right at 2800 rpm calculated. I know that the Scorpions are good motors but they are too much for my flying at this time. I'm either going to try some four cell batteries with my current motor or I'm going to get a different one from HD or HC.

crash - thanks - out of stock. I've been reading the early stuff but it's mostly about scale fuse. Interesting but...

J-M - hey! When do you sleep? lol

I decided it was time to start getting things put together on the EXI. I took everything out of the box & Wow! not a piece of paper any where to tell me what the 6 bags of hardware are for! I watched the complete 8(?) piece vids from NuttCaze & he talked about plastic servo nuts. There isn't a piece of plastic to be seen in any of these bags. In fact there's a total of 3 nuts in all the bags 2 small ones & one for the blade holder screw.

I wonder if anybody covered any of this any where on this thread? Not sure what to search for to find it. Like instructions on what to do with all these little pieces!! Yea I'm so new it hurts some times.

I also tried to put a servo in from the inside like he showed but there's no way they'll fit. Do I need to loosen one side of the frame to do this? Is it worth it? I noticed in the Trex manual they mount them from the outside. The servos I have don't fit from the outside, the case is larger than the gear box!

Again any help would be greatly appreciated!

Chuck.

Yes...it's mentioned in this thread that you use the T-Rex 450 manual.pdf to help with the build. You can use about any scrap plastic to make servo screw nuts (1/16th or 3/32nds" thick is good), make sure you drill the hole undersized so the screw will grab it good. The motors....you can also get them from heli-direct or X-Heli for nearly the same price...usally shipping prices decide for me. I don't know what to tell you about servos not fitting. My two front servos are inside...my rudder servo is outside the frame.

HDX-450 3200KV or 3500KV motors

crash - I really like your nickname!

Thanks for the info. Any advantage of the 3550 over the 3200 Kv motor? They're only 2 bucks different.

Would a 30A ESC handle these (28A MAX)? Otherwise I'd have to go to a 40A ESC.

I really appreciate the help.

Chuck
