so the CA soaks into the hinge ( like a wick) and adheres to the plane.. seems like it wouldn't be very strong... once these things break ( or if they ever would) is it easy to replace them>? sorry.. i am just new to planes (especially putting one together) thanks vic!!

Yup, the CA bonds the hinge to the wood by wick action. I never used 'em because like you say, if they break, yer hosed. I use the Dubro plastic hinges with metal pin, and I use epoxy...even on foamies (they have 2 or 3 sizes) I use small on the foamies and medium on the .40 size balsa models.

Sheerider ~

Hey, it least its keeping the thread alive with the plank stuff for a bit.... Its been pretty slow here. I thought the same about those hinges and wondered how in the hek is that going to hold ?? ! It does, so no worries. On my MFX, I also used some "T-pins" or a guy could even just use any pins, to help keep the hinges secure and not slipping upon doing the procedure. But not necessary I suppose.... Thin CA works very well....

Here was my 2nd flight with that bird :

LMAO....the dubro hinges are replaceable, but I don't remember saying it was EASY. If you use one small drop of epoxy installing them, you can get them back out by pulling stoutly. If you put a good anount in the slot...yeah, they're in there for good.

I'am not sure, but Vic will know.... My little hinges are some kind of like thin fiberglass type of thingy's ( ) , and with the thin CA soaking into them and into the slightly enlarged hole the CA then travels and also soaks into the balsa wood... Upon trying to yank and pull on them I don't see them ever coming out, but dunno as I'am a nooby here with the planks. I know they definately won't tear however, there pretty much tear proof even just dry from the material they used. Looks like thin fiberglass cloth ?

My dad slammed into a big ol' tough Oak tree that has some stiff tough ridged branches, a good ways up, almost full throttle and his Pulse uses the same hinges. They still held... I would think before these type of hinges will fail, other structural things of the plane would go first ?? Still not sure though, as I have not much experience with em' yet.... I do know to stay away from tress though ! We did recover the plane as Vic remembers... This was in Central Cali when I was down there...

Watch those trees..... They can reach out kinda far and grab yer plane ! (LMAO)....

yea.. my current hinges seem like they are a very strong fiberglass like disc, like you mentioned J .. any idea as to how long it would take to wear these things out?? chances are i will probably crash the plane before that ever happens?? lol

I think the supplied hinges will be fine. As Jeff pointed out, everything around them will break first. I've never used CA hinges before and I'm OLD SCHOOL in planks, I use what I know. I do know you can't really use CA hinges on foamies unless you buy foam safe CA, and I've never seen a reason when epoxy is common to all hardware stores and works well with dubro hinges, which are stocked at the LHS....no brainer for me. I say...use 'em, use the T pins like jeff showes, make sure the gap between the stab and control are correct.

Vic ~

I wish I would have made my gap a smidge tighter.... I think its a bit to far out and to much of a gap, after seeing others, and reading about drag etc. etc. But I'll know on the next one.... Live and learn.... I really didn't know at the time, and everything is just another learning process as it was with the heli's. Thank goodness there are some heli pilots around like yourself who are also familiar with the planks to help out !

Those pins are what holds the two halves of the hing together...like a door hinge. The sets shown at tower with the cotter pins...those are for like 1/4 scale planes...BIG planes. The small and medium hinges have a solid pin in them already and are crushed at the end to keep them in place. The proper gap between the control surface and the stab/wing is about the thickness of a piece of typing paper folded over. My corsair has about 1/64th, but that's only because it's a foamie and hard to be exact/precise. Read the manual I posted on the uproar since yours lacks info or go here:

http://www.towerhobbies.com/products/pdf/towa2020mnl.pdf

R/C planes all build about the same. ARF's, the building is about 90% done for you so it's really a bad deal for noobs....you don't have the experience so it's harder to figure out what's what. If you decide to fly planks regular, you really need to get a KIT and build it, you'll learn a lot. I've kit built at least 5 planes and the only reason I'm doing ARF with the Uproar is time and cost. I couldn't build the kit including covering as cheap as the ARF, and I'd like to have it flown before snow flys...which I'm expecting in two or three weeks.

I've been using the flightmax 2200/20c's...they're not bad.....you might opt for the 25c's though.

OK....I figured you'd need more punch.
Been working on that OS .40FP getting it ready. When nitro fuel goes bad (10% omni), it turns purple....mine was WAY purple (used to be pink), so I bought a gallon today ($24). Got the fuel home purged the system of old fuel, the darned engine wouldnt stay running with the new fuel. As soon as you pulled the battery, it would quit, I suspected bad glow plug right off. I tested the plug out of the plane, it would glow under battery power just fine. I went to get a plug at the LHS. He told me that if the thing glows under battery, it's good. Well, I bought a new one anyway. I put the new glow plug in, started the engine, dialed in the high needle and the low needle, no probs...idles like a dream and has smooth transition to high without the battery attached. These plugs which contain platnium, are pretty touchy and the elements can crack under vibration, etc. You can show a good glow under battery but because of the micro cracks in the element, heat transfer through it gets interupted, yet it still will glow under battery power. Been a while, I forgot all this stuff but the new plug did the trick. WHen glow plugs are starting to go bad, you will notice it's getting harder to hand start the engine.

awesome vic.. i would have never guessed the plug to be bad.. what is funny is that i went to the LHS today and bough a glow plug for the four stroke thats going in my texan bird.. i noticed the engine would load uf on fuel (seemed that way) no matter what the needle settings were.then when i attatched the ignitor to the plug it would clear out.. dummy me had a 2 stroke plug in the motor ( too cold a plug).. so 14 bucks later i had a 12x7 zinger prop and a o.s. F glow plug.. man the price of fuel sucks so bad.. i buy the wildcat fuel.. my next gallon will be the 2 & 4 stroke jug with 15% nitro and 18% oil.. again about 24 bucks.. the sad thing is how much fuel i have had sit too long and go bad..

I only lost about 10 oz, it's been sitting here since about 1995. Now I got a brand new gallon, I doubt it'll have time to go bad. I do need to stock up on glow plugs though....maybe 3/4 more. OK...did research today on plugs. YES, 4 strokers have their own. On the 2 strokers, cold to hot and almost anything in between but here's the kicker. The heat range of the plug determines engine TIMING, and this is critical for 4 strokers especially. It's imperitive you use the recommended plug in that 4 stroker (or two stroke) per the manufacturer. Using the wrong plug can cause spark knock, backfiring, poor performance....a host of problems, I just learned this today. So, when selecting a glow plug, do your homework carefully.

yea.. the hotter plug you use, the more timing you add.. so i was slow in time on the 4 stroker with the cold plug.. it was almost like the fuel/air mixture was partially burning.. also there are a lot of guys adding/removing head shims to reduce/increase compression.. that also changes the timing.. i have only trashed 1 nitro engine so far.. it was in my brand spankin new miss vegas boat.. i was running it in on a rich needle at 1/4 throttle and it locked up.. the sound it made i will never forget.. i found that the water pickup hole in the rudder ( where the engine gets its water to stay cool) was clogged up inside with metal shavings from the manufacturing process.. horizon sent me a brand new motor and rudder.. the piston was seized to the sleeve.. hard to say how hot that thing got.. lol

This weather sucks! Nobody is flying and the servos for the Protos haven't come in. I guess I'll start on the GWS Formosa kit.

Yeah...one flight in a break from having wind. Landed, wind started back up....done. It was COLD out there too. I got a "project bird". My nephew bought it off EBay, it had a stripped servo gear new out of the box. I gave it a once over on all the electrics/electronics...it would have never flown out of the box....period. I'm gutting it because the airframes isn't bad, it's just the JUNK they put in it. SO I'm installing a real motor/ESC/servos/etc. I think it'll be an awsome little bird when I get it done.
