That's cool crash. This Formosa is my first real plane build as the first was a GWS slowstick and that's more like building a kite!
Do you know if you can cover a foamy with film?

Sheerider, I accually have two Protos! Only one is flying and I'm upgrading the servos on it. On six cells they are unreal![>:]
If I can find my camera and get it to work I'll post some pics.

I believe you can use film but it has to be LIGHT like ultra coat or a film like ultra coat. No need to tell you LOW HEAT, like about 110deg/120deg use a sock on the iron or you will melt the foam.

i would love to have a protos.. the design with the belt going all the way to the motor is awesome..

vic,
cool looking plank right there.. ben a while guys.. i mounted some carbon fiber blades on the 450 and have been doing some flying.. last night i took the -8 scorpion motor out and reoplaced it with the scorpion -6 and a 60a scorpion esc.. i wanted to give it a try very bad but the wind was bad today.. i am using a 11t pinion on it.. not sure if i will like it though...

Gonna have to ditch the Flight power EVOs! Just had one go down in flight when I was agressive with the collective and it let the low voltage kick down happen in FFF at very low altitude! I had to set it down so fast it tipped on the unlevel ground.
My TIG Z weaves survived again!
I'm going to save those batteries for foamy flights and just use my Zippys for heli flights.

yikes!! i was wringin the 450 out today at the park.. doing some good flying.. then all of a sudden, in mid air, i hear a pop noise and a part of the heli ejected about 30 feet away.. DOWN SHE GOES!! unbeleivable, the copterx metal tail broke and ejected from the heli!! from what it seems one of the tail blades let loose and the vibration broke the tail mount.. so the damage so far, main shaft, flybar, tail blades, cnc tail, main gear, tail boom, and 1 peice of the carbon frame broke.. it was a serious thump when this thing hit the ground!! i was about 100 foot up!! so i have some of the parts on order that i need... what a bummer!

Tail blade ejecting...been there. Damage is pretty extensive when that happens but you ought to see the carnage when a main rotor blade seperates...holy smokes!

yea, i can't beleive the vibration snapped the tail box off the boom.. who knew?? its a bad feeling whem you see your heli let loose and different parts of it go flying in the air!! time to rebuild again.. by the way guys, i was using carbon fiber tail blades from hobby city!! first time ever this has happened.. maybe a lesson learned...

I see where you're going with the CF boom. I doubt an aluminum boom would have excited further carnage to occur. CF is nice, it's light, it's over priced as heck, BUT I have reservations as to the shear strength of it not to mention it's as conductive as a piece of copper....I'm NOT sold on it, nor have I ever been to date.

no, i didnt have a CF boom on it, ( i like the metal booms).. the only advantage i see is for the looks when it comes to carbon fiber... i will say though, if this heli had a metal frame on it, it would have really trashed things.. i was surprised at how well the frame held up..

LMAO...I've mangled a few frames this summer. Right now, I'm without a flyable heli...been that way for a while. REASON....I'm gonna get the Futaba GY401 and servo, a new EXI-450 standard, and the CNC head and tail for it....starting over. I'm in the middle of a Tower Hobbies Uproar .40 build, and a couple other plank projects going on. With the weather so crappy and wind all the time, I'm NOT in a hurry or the mood to do a new heli right now.

sheerider,
That's scary! especially since I'm running the same tail blades! I lost one of the tail blades on my 50 once but luckly I was only six inches off of the ground and could land before the heli could tie it's self in a knot!
Were you running the EXI tail?

Had my enging quit on the Uproar...right after I had it dialed in perfect. It went down in the thickets and briars of a swamp. Damage was VERY light, I sould have it back in a day or so. It'll look like "Spot" though...no white covering at the LHS, so I bought dark blue....screw it. The plane don't care what color the covering is.

Great to hear on the P-51...gald you're having fun. I still have NO helicopter flyable....all these days with absolutely ZERO wind too.....darnnit.

shoot. i dont know.. maybe around 38".. (thats a wild guess) its the new parkzone p-51 brushless.. i do have a HOT turnigy motor for it (35-36c i think) .. i do know its a 400w+ motor. and i also have a 50a esc for it also ( all hobbycity stuff).. the plane comes stock with a brushless motor and a 18a speed control.. it will only climb vertical for a short while.. its easy and fun to fly but i definately want more power.. but i also want longer flight times.. lol.. i figured with the hotter motor the 2200 zippy would carry it.. the plane came with a 1300mah 3s 15c lipo.. i had a 1500mah 3s 25c that i used on my hbk2 but that battery is shot.. i get around 5 or 6 minutes on the stock battery (but i keep it full throttle the whole time)

i just looked it up vic.. wingspan is 39 inches, length is 33.5 inches, flying weight is 25 oz.. it currently has a 480 sized 960kv motor with an 18 amp esc..
here is the esc i bought http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=6459&Product_Name=Hobbyking_SS_Series_40-50A_ESC
and here is the motor i got also http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=3886&Product_Name=TR_35-36C_1100kv_Brushless_Outrunner_(Eq:_AXi_2814

so what do you think about that combo?

OK.....I bought the same motor rated as a .32 to .35 glow, I was running that and a 40a ESC on a GWS Corsair (36/38" wing span) that has a wooden firewall epoxied to the nose. If you're wanting to run a 2200mAh 20C or so, it flys great, I've done it BUT, I did internal re-enforcements (.030 plastic and 1/16" balsa)and I re-enforced the wings with good making tape and the leading edges with duct tape. I got many flights but the 2200mAh IS too heavy. I finally ended up CRACKING the main wing pretty good (repairable). I didn't use landing gear except on the tail. Under the main wing, I designed and installed a SKID so it was a belly flopper. It flys high and FAST, nearly unlimited vertical. Really, a 2200 is just to heavy. I have a couple of 1500mAh 20c's that are about 1/2 the weight, and performance is about the same as with the 2200's, not as abusive on landings though. Look at the pics, you'll see what it needs to make it work with a powerful motor like you want:

ok... there are a few guys claming it is ok to run the 2200's.. as far as reinforcment, the guys aren't doing anything at all to the parkzone... there is an aluminum motor mount they are using with the turnigy.. what about an 1800mah battery?? think it will pack it?? i really hate the flight times i am getting.. and i know when i install the new motor flight times will decrease a lot.. this is a belly flopper and it already has the plastic skids on the bottom.. the wings seem fairly thick and strong too.. the stock prop is a 9x6 i beleive.. it is plastic and fairly flexible.. what prop do you suggest with the turnigy?? what prop will do what as far as power and current draw.. any info you give i will greatly appreciate.. i am new when it comes to planes, there weight, powerplants, and props.. i want more power and more flight times.. is that too much to ask?? i really love flying this thing.. its the first time ever flying a plane and i had a lot of fun.. no wirries.. i feel confident

OK...we know the GWS quality is FAR below that of Parkzone in refrence to re-enforcements. Propeller...I'm using a 9x6, no heat issues at all, you could even go to a 10-6, or 11-6 from what I've read. If you do go 2200mAh, it's gonna come in real hot. I flew mine a long time before the wing cracked. Just make sure the landing surface is decient and no rocks/sticks/etc. I'm not saying not to use a 2200, it just if the plane hits wrong, it does damage. Like I said, I've been using the 1500mAh 20c's at about 1/2 the weight of the 2200's, it calms the landings down a bit, performance is still very good. Flight times...if you run full the whole time, you're only gonna pull 5-7 minuets no matter what battery you use 1500-2200. I run my timer and land after 10 minuets, period, and the battery isn't even barely warm.

good deal ..thanks for the advice.. i did find some 1800 packs that are quite a bit lighter than the 22's of course... it also seems a lot of guys are just installing a bigger esc and propping up the stock motor and using a better battery... and maybe using a better battery will give a little more power/.? im going to try a few things... also, the elevator hinge is CRAP on this thing.. should i do the hinge tape or take the time to install some CA hinges?

what hinges are on it? I use Dubro small metal pin hinges and epoxy them in. Yeah, I'm running a 40a ESC with a 9x6, no heat. I could use either the 2200 or the 1500's, but the 1500's were easier on it. I don't think I'd go higher than a 10-6 on the prop for heat reasons, but definately be using a 40a ESC with a 10-6. I ran a 25a ESC for a while, it was OK.

Have fun!
