Canyon Lake Aero Modelers Club 40 Race - Sept. 6th, 2008

What a beautiful day for racing!! Clear skies, 5-8 mph winds and a very nice field made for a wonderful race. I think every one had a great time at the inaugural race at the CLAMS field! The only real problem we had was the sun rising directly over the number one pylon! This made plane identification a little “iffy” for the first couple of heats, but after 1 re-fly, we overcame this obstacle and had a great day!

A big “Thank You” to members of the CLAMS club that made it out to help. A very Special thanks to George Sheffield who arrived early and served as chief lap counter all day; and to “Fast” Eddie Flesher who took on the duties of “Chief Chef” and did a fantastic job.

I would also like to acknowledge the great help of Jim Duda and Terry Large. Both traveled to the clams field to act as Pylon Judges and did a great job. I also want to thank “Crash” Seigel for his assistance at the lap counter table and entering scores.

The racing was as hot as the weather! We had a few “Get togethers” which took out a few planes, but overall the pilots did a great job all day.

I am looking forward to the next race at this field!

Final standings:
After 4 heats –

Jim Agnew – 15
Chuck Esh – 14
Mike Walther – 13
Stan Lattrell – 13
Ken Hopson – 12 (Crashed in heat 4)
Richard Moll – 10
Ron Harding – 10
GC Dimit – 8
Bob Severence – 8
Gary Fisher – 7
Tim Purcell – 7 (crashed in heat 4)
Ken Cargill – 7
Richard Storm – 6
Eric Desardi – 5
Jeff Tichenor – 5
Jim McGuinn – 2 (crashed in 2nd heat)

The mains were classic!
D main: Jeff Tichenor beat out Eric Desardi, Richard Storm and Tim Purcell to move on to the C main.

C main: Gary Fisher used his back up plane to beat Jeff Tichenor, Bob Severence and GC Dimit, and move to the B main.

B main: Stan Lattrell edged out Gary Fisher, Richard Moll and Ron Harding to advance to the A main.

The A main was a very close race with the lead changing almost every lap!
Chuck Esh broke out on top, but was chased down by Mike Walther after a couple of laps. Jim Agnew was pushing hard and closing until he double cut and was DQ’d. Stan Lattrell stayed in the hunt until the final few laps when he dropped back a little.

In the end it was Chuck Esh edging out Mike Walther by just over a second. Chuck’s time of 1:24.81 was also the fast time of the day! Stan Lattrell took third place.

Congratulations to all the pilots and to Chuck Esh for another win and fast time!

Chuck

Chuck and CLAMS, Thank You for a fine event, I had lots of fun and what a great place to fly!! Did I set a new record for cuts?? what was it 5 in 3 heats?? Skully must of had one eye closed while flying. Let's see,, what else,, oh yes the quote of the day from Duda, "Eric and Tim, your to pretty to be on the flightline." I don't know about me, but Tim's ATV sandles are something to be seen. LOL..

You are, my friend. We're just better looking than those guys because we're 1/2 their age!

Great race, Chuck. It was definitely one of the most well-organized and run races that I've been to. I guess I'm going to have to start practicing C40 again - I averaged at least 10 seconds slower than I usually run. Must have been the plane... unfortunately I won't be able to use that excuse next time since I mid-aired it. Wait, it was the engine! That's it!!

See y'all at the next one!

Tim

I guess I can count that as Skully Man's first kill. Four more and he's an ACE. To bad it was Tim's plane, D'oh!!

Chuck, thanks for your usual excellent job as CD and for another smooth, well-run race. Maybe us new racers are finally figuring out what to do???? The tight races and fine folks to race with were only made better by Fast Eddie's lunch skills - Eddie, you have talents we didn't know about!! Great field, great weather, and a fun day. Eric, if Skully counts all planes he puts down, including his own, I'm sure he's well past being an ace!!!!!!!

Skully - I think Jim Duda still holds the record for most cuts. IIRC it was 11 in one heat!

Re: kills - not sure who has the lead there. I became an ace about my 6th club 40 race, 3 years ago!! I'm at least a triple ace (how do you spell that?) by now!

I'm sure Bob S. is near the top. He "took me out" 3 times in 3 races!

It's all good!

Hey Guys,

Sorry I missed another Great Club 40 Race, I have missed a few now and regret it big time, even If I only make it to 'D' or 'C' Mains, I always have a great time, I probably won't make it until the final Race at ARCA, looking forward to seeing all the guys then; and 'Hats off' to 'Chuck Waller' for all the work he puts into Club 40!

Doug.

I don't remember who it was Jim, Jeff or maybe Ken, but they made a comment to me about "No mid-airs" at lunch. Then round 4 was evil, and so was the D-main.

Thanks CLAMS for a great race, what a nice field you guys have there. Eddie thanks to the food and drinks, hope your back flying with us soon! I missed a couple of races and almost forgot how fun club 40 racing is, and what a great group of men we fly with, thanks everyone for the help. the volunteers, judges, timers, everyone. I'm proud to fly with you guys!

Next Club 40 race is at my home field, in S. San Antonio...ARCS field I hope it will work out as well as CLAMS race, and that everyone can make it. The runway is brand new, in the middle of a hay field, and the owner loves to keep the field in top shape, look to the web site for directions. or call me (Cell 210-287-2316)

Thanks again to all!
Jim

CLAMS, Chuck, Eddie and George, Jim, Terry, Crash you guys did a nice job. Probably the smoothest run event that I have attended yet! We had a good turn out and some really good racing. I wish we had the opportunity to race some of these other clubs around because I tell you what we have about 9 or 10 guys that we all fly with that are really fast!!!
