I bought one for my DP ultimate, and i wanted to do some kind of hovering. I heard a lot of epople say i should use a perry pump. What advantages would this bring me? WOuld i get more power out of the engine? People at higher altitudes, i also need help. Will this turn a prop quick enough to get my ultimate to hover at roughly 6000' altitude? THanks for all your help.

Adam

Hi Adam. I'm at sea level, so I can't help with your hovering question. I can tell you that this engine should be PLENTY for that plane. I have a friend who's got a Moki 1.35 on that plane. It does great!

As far as the pump goes. The reason for the pump is to offset the lack of backpressure (which in turn reduces tank pressure) from aftermarket mufflers. i.e. Slimline, Bisson Pitts. If you use the stock muffler, I would not mess with a pump.

The way to tell if you need a pump is to check how sensitive your high end adjustment is. If it is not very sensitive (lots of turns and no change in engine performance) you need a pump. If it adjusts the engine as usual, no need for a pump.

Good luck.

Mike

Do you happen to know how fast (rpm wise) i would have to swing a 18x6 prop to get roughly 15 lbs of thrustat my altitude?

Thanks

There are literally pages and pages of information on this site about the OS 1.60FX with both the Perry Pump and the Cline Regulator.

I did a lot of reading through this stuff when I was trying to decide on whether to use an OS 1.60FX or a Saito 180 for a Y/A 120 Size Edge 540T.

Try these for starters:

The OS 1.60FX will swing a 18x6 prop at 9200 rpm when broken in. According to the Thrust calcalator this is around 25 pounds of thrust. In reality it is more like 19 pounds of thrust static. The FX will turn 18" and larger props better than the Satio 180. This engine should have no problem with the DP Ultimate because the plane weights around 10.5 to 11 pounds complete. Vertical should be unlimited!

I use a cline pressure system on my 1.60 with excellent results. I had to use this to make up for the lack of pressure from the slimline pitts muffler I used. I like the cline because it is easy to install and requires no adjustment ever. If you plan on doing alot of hovering you might want to consider baffling the cowl intake for better cooling. This will help keep the engine cool during extented hovering manuevers.

THanks for the reply. Any thoughts on how the altitude of 5800 ft will effect the performance? Thanks.

Adam
