Hey Wing, maybe your having some issues with air intake to the carb.? As your flying your intake is much greater and possibly you may need to put a cover plate as a deflector in front of it. Just a thought.

I haven't gotten to fly much, but I've got a few flights on the Yak with a Perry-pumped OS 160.  I'm no 3D'er, but it hovered at a little over half throttle with a Xoar 18x8 prop.  If you don't feel like going to gas, I think this engine is a good alternative.  Just bring lots of nitro to the field.

I don't have any videos, but I finally had mine out last weekend.  I have the SPE 43 in mine.  As I said in earlier threads found that the prop stuck out way to far for my liking.  I cut the standoffs I had with the engine in 1/2.  I remounted and beefed up with alittle tristock around all my firewall inside and out. I also had Al from J-Tec.com make me up a wrap around muffler to custom fit inside my cowl.  He did a great job by the way.  It fit very nice.  The stock muffler would have hit firewall being I cut down the standoffs.  I still had room up front to even install my throttle servo.   I put a smart fly system in her just in front of the pull pull setup.  Mounted the fuel tank up front behind the firewall, and used my battery pack for the final balancing.  It balanced out with the batteries just in front of my smart fly setup. I setup the throws with what Peak said .  I believe it was 20 degrees on alerilons (spelling) and elevators was the same at low rates.  High I set up at 35 degrees.  I only ran a feww tanks of fuel through it before going up, but desided to keep engine for the 1st day alittle rich.
I'll tell you what, at 1/4 throttle this plane will hover and snap roll like no ones business.
I got this plane in the fall and just finally got to get it out and fly it.  I'm happy.  Oh and by the way FKY1000 I also bent in my landing gear like you did and that worked quite well.  I fly off a grass runway and I have plenty of clearence with a 20" prop.
I don't know what some of you guys used on servos, but I used 3305 Futaba's, with a 6 volt sub C pack battery setup.  It stays strong all day.  I put a 6 volt 2000mah in the ignition system.
Anyways saying enough I thought that I just should take time to put this thread in give Peak a good note.  I really like the plane.  As soon as I have some footage I will put it on this thread.  So for now.........Happy flying all.

Read this whole thread.Think I'm going to order one of these with the spe 43. Bend the landing gear. Cut the Standoffs, hack the fire wall, two servors for elevator, !800 to 2250 mah lipoly, with 8 amp Bec for reciever, and maybe a 1500 mah for ignition. (depends what I need for balancing weight and whats lying arond) This will be my first gasser. I see that RJetts uses 3305 Futaba servos. Are these servo size neccesary? Have a smoke system in a H9 80" Cub. Hope to add this at a later date. 20 X 8 prop.
Now the big question............ Am I on track here???? Any and all advice will be considered and APPRECIATED. BIG leap for me. Gasser and size. Used to .40 and .60 size for the past 30 years, on and off. Itching to order it, but want to get it right 1st time. Need to order servos too, with long arms. Servo reverser for Dual Elevator servos. Might as well get them from Peak, while I'm at it. Dual ele servos, how much torque each suggested?
Does the SPE 43 run OK? RJetts, you have yours smoothed out yet?

call me old fashioned. wasn't that engine red? clashed with the plane scheme. i have the spe 43. mld probably would have been enough. maidened mine today. flew good. few clicks of up, and a few clicks left aileron. nervous as hell, as I am with all maidens plus it was my first gasser. engine needs more breaking in. then i'll tune it. flew low rates. took a few pix before flight. some video with a headcam. need to cut a hole in side of cowl to prime carb. also replaced the originanal tank with a 16 oz.
good luck.

After more than a gallon of fuel ran thru my SPE 43, I could not get it tuned out so off came the motor and sent it to Cermark for a little service. Before it went in for service with a 20x8 I was only turning 6900 rpm's, after service same prop turns 7400 rpm's. It runs a whole lot better than before, not perfect but better.
Alex at Cermark has been very helpful when dealing with the few issue's I have had.

I haven't posted on this thread in awhile, but I'm glad to see people are enjoying their Yaks. For those people with SPE 43s not running smooth, you should look into the timming. If you remember, mine never ran smooth the entire time I had it. I found the the factory timing, with it set as late as possible, was at 60 degrees before top dead center, or 30 degrees off. Now that I have that fixed it runs way better. I just jerry-rigged the sensor with some RTV and zip-ties to the correct location and haven't had a problem since.

Sup guys.......I haven't posted here in a while, but was reading on the SPE 43 what you guys been saying. Well let me just say that before I farted around with my carb. I was runing so, so. A bit rich and spitting some. I mention a while back I cut my stand offs down and had a bit of the problem with the needle valves being very close to the firewall. (Well the low end side). High end stuck past the side of the wall far enough for making adjustments. Here's what I did after running it for about 6 flights. I saw one of the guys at our club with an engine he bought, that he had to build. Looked almost identical to the SPE 43. His was a 50. The thing that impressed me was his carb was turned in the other postion. (turned over) This was making his needle valves come down in front. So, I turn my carb around and haven't had the engine run since. I put it back the factory way and still nothing. It's not sucking gas at all. I checked my fuel tank, fuel lines, removed carb opened it checked for clog on the screen inside, everything. The only time it fires if I shoot gas down the carb. I'm out of ideas. Any body help with this.

I got a tip from another member on a very easily way to time it.

You take a piece of paper about 5" by 1/4" and wrap it around the prop shaft by the magnet and cut it to the exact length.

Then cut it in half (180 degrees) in half again (90 degrees) and again (45 degrees) then take two thrids of that (30 degrees).

Find top dead center and then use the 30 degree piece of paper.

This really helped my engine.

Also, I picked up a GP Edge 540. I was surprised to find one new at a good price only an hour away when I live in a town of 10,000 and the nearest hobby shop is 3 hours away.

Got the yak all fueled up, checking all the controls to make sure everything is working properly, gave the prop a couple of flips( startd on 2nd flip) first time for this. I was letting the motor warm up and playing with the controls when they all stopped moving. Looked thru the canopy at the receiver and it was flashing red, I shut it all down rebound the receiver and did a range test and it did it again. I was about 15 seconds away from taxi-ing out when it happened the first time ( there must be some kind of r/c diety) or I would have lost my yak today.
I always take 2 to 4 planes with me to the field just incase, I pulled a receiver from another plane and placed it into the yak and it worked great, I followed Alex's advice and made a small adjustment to the high end needle and flew it without the cowl for about 3 minutes landed and made another small adjustment and back up it went running even better. After 3 flights without the cowl, I decided it was time to see if it was going to change again with the cowl on. A few minutes later cowl is on and off she goes, this time it sounds and runs just like the cowl was off(WOOHOO). 5 Total flights and I am now a happy owner of a Peak Models Yak, and all this due to Alex at Cermark.
Thanks again Alex.

rednekk58
He never got specific as to what they changed, except for the ignition(which he replaced) for 70.00 bucks
Alex did tell me after the first gallon of fuel switch 100 to 1 on fuel.

to squeky,
congrats on your 540. understand the timing thing, but do you have any pics on how you secured the sensor? would like to get some ideas. want to make it somewhat adjustable.
maybe make a new sensor holder. also i'm running 4.8 volt 2350 mah for ign. directions say 4.8 to 6.0 volts. what did you guys use? also set the low and high speed needles to factory spec. per directions. seemed to make it worse. 32:1 oil mix right now, less than a quart thru the engine.

to wingspam,
congrats on your success.
al b

THANKS BOTH for your help!!! my profile has pics of the plane. my 1st gasser.
PS. was getting a little over 700 rpm with a 19x10 prop. is this any good?

rednekk,

I'm out of town, but will get pics of how I secured the sensor when I get back. It is held in place with RTV and Zip-Ties, making in non-adjustable unless you completly redo it. Your RPM sounds good, and from what I hear that's about all you're going to get. I'm pulling around 6,900 with an 18x10, but living at 7,000' has something to do with that. The timing didn't really help me gain RPM, but it did make the engine run way smoother and start easier. Both my low and high speed neeedles are qutie a bit leaner than factory settings, but again that could be the elevation.

Also, I've been running a 6V 1700mah igniton battery and am currently 45:1 on gas - but I really shouldn't be the one to ask.

Hey guys,

I'm considering this 71" from peakmodel, but was wondering how the parts availability is?

I would hate to buy and then not be able to buy new wings if needed.

Thanks.

They have parts available but the shiiping is the deal killer.
For example
A cowl for 45.00 then 60.00 for shipping

Try Valley view r/c. It's the same plane, they call it a TLT aviation. $299 with free shipping. This same airframe is sold as Peak, Cermark, TLT etc, etc. They are all the same, just maybe different covering. Valley view is in the northwest and I got mine in Ohio in about three days. No need to wait and pay for one to come from the land of the Kiwi!

Peak states they only have cowls and canopies.

I'm starting to see more advertisements for the "A" version 70" yak. I only see the 71" yak "B" version advertised on Peak.

They state a new version is coming out next month and the "B" version will be gone, as will the "A" or 70". Eastrc is already discontinuing the "A" version it looks like.

Seems all these vendors are getting these yaks from the same manufacturer in China, but I don't know which.

Only thing negative on these yaks is nobody sells parts. I guess the price is cheap enough that if I break a wing or something, I can just buy a whole new kit.

BTW, the "C" version is going to be $369.

FYI,

Just found out Maxford USA has discontinued the 70" as well.

Valleyviewrc has them in stock and is actually carrying many parts for it including fuses.

They are also getting the new version in a month.

How would a YS 1.60 DZ fare on this airframe. I have one lying around and this might work nicely. I have an EF 88" w/DA50 and wouldn't mind a small glo-bird to play with.
