would a TL01 adapted for front wheel drive give a good idea of what the specific front wheel drive tamiya cars handle like? or are those weighted at the front to handle better/different?

always wanted to see what they are like but dont want to buy a whole car just to find out

Thanks

It could adapt but would take ALOT of modding to do so as its designed for 4wd
You would be better off finding a cheap Tamiya FF01 chassis i think...

I would think taking out the rear dogbones on the TL would give you an ideal of front wheel drive but even then the FF chassis wieght is designed around FWD.

Yeah, the Fwds are built to have a good deal of the weight over the front wheels. The m03 has the motor and batter slot located pretty close to the front wheels. Definitely worth looking into. I like my m03 a lot, it's fun to drive and is usually very stable.

Disconnect the rear drive shaft then you will become a front wheel drive. Otherwise, get a Tamiya FF01 which is now hard to find.

FWD cars handle well when using medium compound tires on the front and soft tires on the rears, but lacks the OOMPH....off the starting line compared to 4WD carts.

my tamiya ff01 is a rocket.
it was my first rc car... bought it about 13 years ago.
the trinity 11t double in there is roughly the same age. the car is pretty darn fast. i dont use it that often because i mostly just drift in the driveway with the kids
but when im trying to run the dog down, thats the car i use!!

FF01 here and FF01 there.... Has everyone forgotten about the FF02 ??

Which in my humble opinion is far better on a racetrack than an FF01.
(Yes, I've tried both)
When it comes to street bashing it doesn't really matter what you use. Everyone's a winner

The FF01 is an offspring from and shares components with the TA01/TA02 which came in the early nineties. The TA01 itself was a modified "4WD-chassis" first released in 1990

The FF02 is from the modular TL-family (including theM03/04, WildDagger, WildWilly) and emerged in the LATE nineties.
On this newer FrontWheelDrive chassis, Tamiya ditched the front motor layout in favour of a front-midship design. That did away with the "hammerhead" tendencies plagueing the old FF01. Perhaps at the expence of accelleration from standstill. (there's always a tradeoff)

Anyway, I quite enjoy driving my FF02 'round the track, it's faster than the 4wd cars on the long straights:-) It has the "TL01 Long Suspension Arms" kit and a short wheelbase (239mm) topped off with a Corolla body.

Cheers
