I took my 4 star 60 up tonight for the first time... got off the ground without a hitch and got her all trimmed out, got comfortable with it and started doing loops, then i decided to do a roll. Tail assembly ripped off as i cam out of it and my plane plummeted 150 ft straight down into the ground. Wings disintegrated on impact and the fuse ripped in half... the plane was irreparable to the best of my knowledge, luckily the engine and all my electronics survived. And it gives me a great excuse to go back to the hobbie store what more could i ask for?

Any idea what caused the airframe failure?

the balsa plate that i glued my tail to ripped off, and you can now see that only about 1/4 the total surface area was glued down by the manufacturer... but i should have caught the flimsy tail section... stupid rookie mistake

I always pinned the rudder through the stabilizer with wooden dowels...It could be very easy to think you have a good glue joint, when in fact its lacking. Most people I know also put tri-stock on the base of the rudder on both sides where it meets the stabilizer ...

Sorry about the crash its always painful, on first flights especially, Sounds like you are ready to get back on the horse though..

Maybe the manufacturer will give you a new airframe. They probably should if the bad gluing was their fault.

I recently had an E-Flite Ultra Stick 25e fail in flight when the wing ripped out of the fuse at its forward pins - either the wing or the fuse failed, couldn't tell. Anyhoo, the manufacturer was kind of vague on the phone, but when I sent it back with a full explanatory note, they immediately agreed to send me a new one.

How about a picture of the glue joint failure? Help others not make the same mistake.

It also appears that the wing joint failed as well. If memory serves, the tail feathers and the wings have to be assembled. What type of adhesive was used to join the wings and tailfeathers? Sorry for your loss!!!

Happy Landings!

the wing joint did not fail until it played lawn dart, and i used 30 minute epoxy glue to secure the tail feathers, i will try to get a pic of the failure point up soon. and i plan to make sure everything is very secure for my next plane . Thanks for the advice on how to secure the tail in the future

Have you got the pieces where the joint failed.....enough for a decent picture? If so, you may be able to get the manufacturer to replace it. My Alpha 60 from Horizon lost it's firewall about 5 minutes into the maiden flight. Sent some pictures and within a week had a complete new plane.

Totally repairable, just a few pounds of epoxy, all the parts recut and about 2-3 rolls of ultrakote and that's it, wait?..... yeah buy another on second thought.
Sorry for the joke, couldn't help it, but seriously, guy's would plant their planes and come back from retreiving them to plop them in my truck and walk away, on them would be a note saying " you gotta help me out and fix this", sometimes it's worse than yours.

haha ya, i looked at rebuilding it... figured it was not worth it. And call me superstitious but i am scared of that plane now, i had a really bad time getting everything to work right for it, first my radio died, then my engine decided to spasm on me and then my radio died again... i think i spent twice the amount of time tinkering than building
