if you buy an aluminum impeller make sure it's a nice pre-sharpened one or at least one that only needs sharpening. IMO aluminum is overkill plastic will do fine.

sounds like you failed to make sure it wasnt rubbing before you test-ran it haha

haven't put much thought into it yet. and just put brushless in nqd jet and tested ran for 13 seconds and both blades on impeller blew off **** wasn't expecting that ! going to buy aluminum impeller whats your thoughts about it and dose the free shaft slip right in?

Do what?? What motor were you using? Never heard of that happening before. I've heard of the impeller coming loose on the shaft (some have superglued it and some drilled/tapped it and installed a grub screw to hold it). Sounds like you ran some foreign material thru it (a stone perhaps?). The aluminum Taiwan impellers are not very good quality, and the shaft is 3mm - you'll need to drill out the shaft bore and the coupling (better yet, buy the correct coupling - it's nearly impossible to drill out a coupling and not have it wobble).

OSE sells one that can be turned down that has a 2mm threaded and has a nose cap . i drilled out the threads and nose cone with a 2mm bit . the ground the nose con off . epoxyed to the stock shaft after removing what was left of the old one . after the glue set i put in a drill and used a peace of sand paper to turn it down slowly.

Has anyone looked into a Graupner Micro Jet?
I would think Graupner sells replacement jet props.

just make sure the scoop piece of the jet drive doesnt rub. it has on all our boats, even if just slightly. etokyopop broke his prop within the first 5 minutes because of that as well

Then it sounds like the shaft had come (forward) out of the rear bushing allowing the impeller to flail against the insides. You have to be careful to make sure the shaft is in the bushing (all the way back) before fitting the coupler/motor. I might be easier to drill out the bushing and shaft bore to 3mm and get a 2.3mm to 3mm coupling. Or take a chance and try to drill out one send of the coupler - if it wobbles, scrap it and buy one the right size. Then you can just drop in a graupner replacement if it happens again.

that also, but i've yet to see that happen. what i meant was the pointy corners of the removable scoop in the jet drive are too high and will rub against the prop. i had to sand mine down to get them not to rub

Most of the jet unit intakes I've seen are from vacuume formed ABS, if your impeller is aliminium, spinning at 30,000rpm + and it sucks a stone in the wrong place, then you'll likely put a hole in the side or top of your intake

Likewise, if a stone catched on a stator vane, and the metal prop whacks into it, then your stator is history. In my opinion, the prop should be a sacrificial link. r2hobbies and hobbyking both sell plastic props, you may have a closer supplier. r2hobbies have some plastic props with really small holes inside, I don't think down to 2mm, but you can bush out your shaft with a short length of brass tube, and still have a locking pin for the prop drive connection.

How about a mini jet drive. I used to have one of these. You could contack Hobby-Lobby and see if they have the prop seperate and what size it is.

If I bought one of these NQD Tear Into's and then replaced the standard Gear with a M-troniks 20T ESC and a Tamiya TZ motor(of Course reciever and new Servo) do you think it would work???

Hey Magnat, That motor & esc would work fine with the knock off jet boat, with the following exceptions.
1. Motor is a 540 or 600 size motor and the mount on the drive is for a 380 size motor. You would need to make a different motor mount to run it with this drive.
2. Outshaft is 3mm on this motor whereas the stock motor & coupler is 2.3mm. It would be necessary to either drill out the coupler or order a different one 3mmX2.3mm

One option would be to install a Graupner mini jet which is approximately the same dimensions, but the mount is for a 540 or 600 size motor and it comes with 3mmx3.17mm ujoint. However half the fun with these boats is gutting them and then making them work better with other componets. It will also be faster with the tamiya motor and esc, but not as fast as using a brushless set up. I originally did the graupner mini jet drive in my knock off and used different 540 motors for awhile but eventually went to a 3200kv Emp brushlles with a Quark33 esc. It is alot of fun with this set up.

progress so far, it finally got wet today! but only for 5 mins

First bath test, there was water leaking in, so jet drive was removed and resealed. THe motor fitted is for testing only, I have an inrunner on order. This motor fitted is an outrunner, and on bench testing I noticed the outer can was moving back when throttle was opened. I moved the coupling back towards the motor to prevent this, but then the rubber seal was coming out of the drive, so I decided to make a spacer from ally tube to eliminate the gap. ( as in pic)
Jet drive reinstalled (again!) but using small bolts and nuts, the self tapping screws are getting a bit soft in the plastic now. I also fitted a piece of 2mm plasticard in the hull to act as a battery tray and velcro to hold the battery. Bath tested no water leaks, motor working ok.

I then inspected the "bits left over" which always seems to happen, and there was the brass bush for the end of the shaft
Stator back off, bush in, resealed, off to lake!

Everything went well, but motor got very hot within 3 mins or so. Esc was cold, which was good news, and there is a bit of water getting in, I think it could be coming up the shaft, so will have to repack with grease. The motor was quite fast, up to the 3200kv videos I have seen, but it has to be water cooled, so will try an inrunner I have that is 2600kv (think that will be a bit slow) whilst I wait for the ordered inrunner. The one on order is:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/EMAX-Brushless-Inrunner-motor-B2040-15-KV3600-x1_W0QQitemZ120488804161QQcmdZViewItemQQptZRC_Modellbau?hash=item1c0db13f41

but I think the kv is too high after todays test. I noticed that up to 3/4 throttle, there was acceleration, then last 1/4 more revs and noise, but no faster. It was quite cheap, so if it fails no big loss, I will get the 3200kv everyone has had success with. THe ally spacer had chewed up, so the outrunner is removed and back in the spares box!

Paintjob is finished, with some random decals to finish it off!

my next motor to try has different size screws to the outrunner I tried, I cant find the original ones anywhere!! can somebody please confirm the size of the original motor screws? I think 2.5mm?? I want to get bolts that I can use a spanner on so I dont have to remove the jet drive everytime I want to switch motors, cant get a screwdriver on, and with allen key bolts it took ages to get the motor out, or has anybody got a good technique I am missing !

The key to easy motor replacement starts before installing water cooling. If you drill a 1/4" hole in the transom directly behind the left (viewed from behind) motor mount screw you can use this hole to install motors with the use of a long hex (ball preferred) driver. Then you use this hole later for water inlet from the jet nozzle. Remove the steering servo rod and use that hole to access the other motor screw. Clean and easy.

Next person who gets a Tear into can they shoot a stock vid running in a straight line to check the speed...
I have seen the Vids on youtube but everyone seems to turn too quickly to test straight line speed..
