RC Plane vs Big Machine Guns I wonder if it is really that hard to shoot that RC plane with all that firepower.

What fun!!! Flying the plane would be a hoot - but I'd rather be behind one of the Brownings!

it is hard. i watched several paint ball guns trying to shoot a very close in trainer for a long time. you even had the tracer effect with the big paint balls and still had a hard time shooting it down. however that video is nuts. how much lead and gunpowder was wasted?

If I were selling the ammo, the plane would be cheap advertisement. Think about it. Pay $25 bucks to shoot + whatever ammo you use. The most you are out is $200 bucks with the model.

There is a commercial business in England that arranges corporate days out to shoot at models. They use shotguns and the models are simple deltas with some protection round the radio gear.

Unless the guys are very good shots you have to fly low and real slow and real closeto give them a chance to hit you.

They also do RC fixed and Heli and Jet training.

I flew around for 15 minites in a foamy biplane with guys shooting potatoe canons and 12 gauges at fairly close range, not one hit, I never laughed so hard in my life.. I actually blew out an outer cabane due to high G loads and still limped it back home..

The US Army had this big foamy delta called a "RC-MAT" that they used to train anti-aircraft gunners. Rather than firing actual cannon ammo (expensive) they used a M-16 mounted coaxially with the cannon. They'd land the model and count the holes in the foam afterwards - it was the rare occasion they'd actually get hits. This was in an article in Model Aviation sometime in the 80s or 90s.

There WAS a video on YouTube about someone flying a CL Combat model (looked like UK Vintage class model to me - not terribly fast) in front of a group of people from a shotgun club. He'd do figure 8s and such downwind, the shooters were off to the side so he wasn't in the line of fire. Lots and lots and lots 12 gauge shells expended, not even one hit. The poster got flamed something terrible - can't remember if it was on YouTube itself (in the comments) or elsewhere (where I posted a link to the video) so it might have been removed by now. In any case, searching for "CL combat shotgun" brings up LOTS of hits but all having to do with "combat shotguns" and no models.

Man, I thought R/C could get expensive, crashing airplanes and such, but those guys probably just expended a couple 40%'ers worth of ammo trying to shoot that little delta down! LOL

I flew RC-MATS for the Army back in the late 70's. We were at Ft. Irwin, CA (high desert) doing live fire training for an Infantry battalion. One company of about 100 soldiers lined up with their rifles and shot at the plane while I flew it back and forth. After about 5 minutes of mass firing the plane still showed no sign of a hit. The battalion commander stepped up to me and quietly said, "Play along." He ordered all the troops to cease fire and then took a rifle from one soldier. In a loud voice he said, "This is the way you are supposed to do this!" As the plane came by he opened up with a short burst of full automatic fire. I immediately rolled the plane inverted and pulled it into the ground....you could have heard a pin drop as he handed the soldier back his weapon.

On another day I was flying the target plane in front of a tank platoon. One of the machine gunners made a direct hit on the K&B .61 engine. Straight down thru the glow plug, piston, and out the bottom of the case. The only part of that engine still useable was the prop washer!

However, shooting a Browning M2 50 cal MG at the planes was even more fun. I even hit one once.

What an incredible shot..!
I'd love to give it a try with an assortment of small caliber rifles.

Around 1978, one of the guys at RS Radio Systems told me RS was getting out of the commercial market to fill orders with the US military for foam delta models that they could use for gunnery practice with small caliber guns to save money instead of using the larger 50 caliber guns.

RS made some nifty small transmitters, about the size of the Cannon radios.

A few years later, John Brodbeck of K&B told me they were using K&B .61 engines but the military made him grind the K&B logo off the engine. Big secret, guess the military brass thought no one would recognize a K&B .61 without the name.

Yes, all the RCMATS that I saw in the late 70s had RS radio gear. The airborne system was built into a "brick" that could be easily switched between wings. It was expected that the foam wings would get beat up quickly in use (just in landing if for no other reason). The whole thing was sold to the Army as an ARF "system"...radio gear, engine, tank, props, airframes, and support gear. My memory is sketchy but I think the wings were bare foam...maybe had cardboard covering? The vertical fins were a piece of bent aluminum and the motor mount was bare plywood. They weren't pretty!
