Well, I finished testing the homemade tornado today, after much trial and error.
I first started with a six blade assembly, and it restricted the 1/2 pvc elbow, so then I tried a larger pvc straight nipple and no difference.
So then I went to a five blade assembly, and it restricted, but improved performance by a whole 2%.
Then I was watching my son put together a model car, and it went bingo.
I took a five blade offset fan from one of my scrap bins for models, and bent the blades to a 22 degree angle. Then I opened up the elbow by 1/32, just to the center, and glued
the fan in the center.
There was now restriction, and the % jumped to 8%, more low end torque, and better throttle response, with a slight stumble at first.
So then I put on the k&n filter specially made for my boat, and there was no stumble upon a very fast kick in the throttle, and you could hear
the big difference.
Here is some pictures of the homemade tornado, and the k&n filter.

The filter is the size of a small medicine bottle. I bought from Rite Aid a empty medicine bottle.
The filter will go inside the bottle, with bottom being cut out, and place at the income air vent,
at the front of the first cabin.

I did some further testing, in another direction with the air flow issue. I was at the gun range this weekend, and when I cleaned the barrel.
I remembered they have put in grooves to put spin on the bullet for farther distance, and more precise hitting of target.
Going to try a few tests, with a a plastic mock-up, with a 1/16" wide x 1.5" long that will spiral down the tube, and see what happens.

Hi Butch,

Here is a test that may help you.

Perhaps, run a test using your tornado attached to one end of a clear plastic cylinder tube. The tube should be 2-3" long at most. Attach a vacuum to the other end of the clear tube and burn a cigarette or some incense before the tornado. The cigarette or incense can be in a ashtray or similar when you do the test. All you want is the smoke. If the tornado is working as planned, the smoke should spiral in the clear tube before being sucked into the shop vac hose. This will help you get a good picture how air will move through the tornado.

Give it a try.

-Rich.

Today I put a full day working on the boat, for my truck was in to get all new brake lines put on.

I took out the straight drive from Octura, and installed the Mercury outdrive that my friend Tony sent me. It did align up much better, and better free spin on the shaft, with o binding.
Going to modify the lower portion of the drive to install the 275 prop.
I spray a good ceramic coating inside the hull, and coating everything real good. Will do it again in the morning, and when it dries real good. Will re-install the engine, to measure the 1/4 flex cable to length,
and cut to proper size.
Will be painting the Merc Drive to my standards, and will match the out look that I have in mind for the paint scheme for the boat.
Pictures will be Saturday, for I am tired today.

Anyways I got truck back, and glad it is fixed. It's not like I be without, for a second truck resides in my driveway.

Have a great Night all my friends-Butch

go eazy on cutting the drive, you dont want to make weak spots on the small outdrive.it was built for the 67 nitro motor.i would use the bigest prop and increase the pitch as much as you can to reduce the rpm to about 8000.thats about redline for the motor you have.if you want to use the carb off that fuji motor.to help with the powerband.

Tony, it sounds good to me, I will leave it alone.
Question, is it better to use the two blade prop, or the three blade prop for torque?

Well, here is the merc drive after I sanded out all the flaws, and corrected some bends and dings.
I sanded it down to bare metal, metal prep applied, a two coat sealer primer, three coats of charcoal metallic, and three coats of ceramic marine clear.
I sanded the paint off in certain spots, to give it that bit of detail.
Then I took the three blade prop from you, wet sanded it, check the balance, then polished it to a mirror finish.
When the boat is done, it will look good on her, and more to detailed scale, many thanks.
Butch.

that looks great.you know that that unit is very rare.i saw one on ebay a year ago the was outrageous priced.but it sold.175 dollars.parts are imposable to get for that unit.amps has been gone for some time now.that unit is over 25 years old.with hardly any use on her,one season ,about 6 runs.was for a nitro boat i used a echo weed-eater motor that was about 3/4 hp with her.back in the days the niro 90 guys were using this drive for scale boats.be easy with her and she will give you many years of pleasure.

I am using a 25cc john deere homelite engine, which is vey stout compared to the 30cc engine, which produces less hp then the 25cc. And they are extremely easy to start, and long life and durability.
The boat is detailed with some parts on it I made, like the self cooling radiator system, that is enclosed with the cooling fluid source. I am not looking to set any speed records, just want to kill time, while my son and I are waiting for the fish to bite. And if they start to bite, let them. For if it means my son and I are enjoying the boat and spending quality time together, with our scratch build boat, so be it.
I would love to have a zenoa, or a quick draw engine, but this boat is a detail boat. Horse power for this boat is is un-
heard of.
soundguykaraoke50 advice is the way I shall go, and rich404. For they have been there from the beginning, and have been a golden inspiration.

the motor that is being used for this project is more than stout enough to power this scale model.this is about a 1/6 scale build.if it runs at 25mph that is 150 scale mph.show me a real boat that is used for pleasure that runs at 150mph!!!!!

the motor has a clutch and is a brand new motor ,a zen is$200+100 for the clutch plus shipping and for what?he will never need that much power.i could go on but i think you need to read the entire thread to understand what Mr.Butch is building.

Hey fellow captains:

I have discovered a very easy way to shave, or should I say, cut off the excess fins off a engine head, or some call it a jug.
The purchase of a metal cutting hole maker, just like you use for making the holes in doors, for the locks and knobs.
I chucked it in my small drill press, and use a drill press vise, to hold it steady.
For each fin, you have to retract the cutting blade, to remove the spent aluminum fin, and so on.
The fourth fin, has to be removed, by hack saw and grinder. I used my corded dremel, for the cordless cannot do a very good job of it.
I then drilled and tapped the hold down holes. Cleaned the entire head with trans fluid, and re-lubed all surface's with 30wt syn oil.
used a large radiator clamp to compress the piston rings, and slid the piston into the head.
Installed the new cooling head, SPECIAL THANKS TO TONY, and it was done in a total of a hour.
Below is some of the pictures, I took

Looking good Butch.i realize that i have a box of parts here to ship out to you, money has been tight here for the last couple weeks,Christmas caught up with me,as always i went way overboard for the rugrats my daughter has, plus my oldest grand/daughter wants to race this year,so i am killing two birds with one stone.i have been toying around with introducing a new ready to race, stock class boat in a mono form.so here it goes,on this site but on the gas speed section is my introduction of ,
Gas Propulsion Systems SG1 race mono.i have been real busy in the build room.the new boat only weighs in at 13.8 pounds dry, with a 5.2 horsepower @16000 rpm motor, this is the latest and greatest motor out there,we are shooting for,low 60s out of the box speeds,no nonsense all out race boat,47 inches long and she has a servo mounted trim on the fly feature, three channel fm radio with a complete ready to go price just under $1400 list price.we are still in the r&d of this boat, but if all goes well i should be very busy with building boats all spring long.
sorry i got side tracked,i didn't want to but dodo does happen, lol,
you project is coming along real nice, are you going to have her done by the time the water thaws out?that will be like 6-10 weeks for you.i am including a couple of shots of what i am building.my grand daughter wants to race so she can go at it in this rocket ship.come on Butch finish this boat up so you can start on your next build.lol.

RCU MOD"s

I have not got a answer yet to what had happened to the valued data that was valuable to other members, and myself.
There is a considerable amount of time spent on fact finding, only without warning to have it wiped from the build site.
There is much to be had from the threads that is posted in all the forums, but it is not a great effort to give just cause without some kind of warning.
A greater good can come out of these threads, and keep members up to date with images, and there efforts. We deserve a reason why it has been
thrown out the door!
