I outlined what servos I used on the second page of this thread. There is a thread in the 3D Flying forum that has a lot more info than this thread.

Hey Guys

I was thinking about getting this plane. Anyone have video of it yet? Do you think it flys much better than the edge (60 size from aeroworks) or about the same?

What servos should I put in this (rudder, elevator and ailerons)

Thanks!

Tim,

I think you will find that both the 60-90 Edge and Yak fly much smoother than the edge. If you are looking for a small compact airplane that performs like a bigger IMAC machine this is it!

Servo wise, I would use anything with atleast 80oz of torque.
Tim

The Hitec HS965MG's are good and fast. I use one on the elevator. I put HS225mgs on the rest of the surfaces.
Hopen to a video this weeknd of mine to post. My buddie will shoot and edit it to post for me.

Hey Cory - did you do a dual elevator servo? Or do you have one 225mg on the whole elevator?

Mark - is the 80 oz torque for the elevator and rudder mainly, or are you suggesting this on the ailerons as well, or do you think the 225mg s would be enough for those as is suggested on the forum here? They are 66oz/in @6v

Thanks
Tim

I'm using a single HS965mg on the elevator, HS225mgs on the rudder and ailerons. The 225mgs are running at 6volts and I don't see any problems.
The HS965 is .10 transit at 6volt, so it's quick.

Cory

Here's the 225 in the wings. I used some plywood and made some filler pieces.

Hey guys - I need your help!

I put in the stab, but had a brain fart! I didn't put the elevator in yet.

I got it out in time and cleaned it up, except for where the wood was of course. It soaked in and wouldn't "wipe" off.

SO - should I do some sanding? Or just reapply and try again?

Also - If I go with 2 servos for the elevator - should I cut the elevator in half, so that they control each half indepentently?

Thanks!
Tim

Also - the JR DS821's say they are 88oz at 6v. I'm guessing these will work for this plane?

Thanks

I guess everyone is out flying. WELL, I got mine in and it looks REALLY nice! I'm impressed with the build quality and looks. Other than having a size reference, you would think this was a 33% plane.

I have a saito 100 I'm putting in, but I'm having an issue, in that it bottoms out, into the back of the mount. Did anyone else run into this installing their 100?

Thanks
Tim

Replace the cap screw holding the engine mount, that is behind the carburetor, with a flat head socket screw countersunk to be flush with the engine mount. This will allow you to move the engine closer to the firewall.

Good Call! I think I will still have to cut away a little of the mount, but not as much as without doing that. I can also replace the mount bolts with cap bolts as well.

Thanks!

Here is video of the maiden of my 260. I'm running an OS .75AX with a 14 x 6 APC prop. This is a great combination for this plane.

Read my build log http://electricdan.wordpress.com/aeroworks-extra-260-build-log/ for more details on the setup.

Hey Guys - I just finished building and flying mine. Maiden flight yesterday. Flys VERy well. I'm very please with the build quality and flight charecteristics. I'm not a great pilot but it make my manuevers look smoother than what I'm used to

I'll add some pics soon

Hey guys. The 260 has been great. I'm playing with a couple new brushless outrunner motors to see which one I like.
Hopen to get that done soon. Here's a picture next to the big brother, 85cc powered 260.

I have my Extra 260 on order with expected delivery next week.   I've been wanting an Aero-Works plane for a long time.

I will use a Tru Turn spinner, can anyone tell me the size of the backplate on the factory included spinner?

Thanks for any help.

Lee

I believe I'm using a 2 1/4" spinner.  I'm using the tru turn big bird or big prop.  Since you will likely be using a 15x6 or similar
the normal size won't allow room for the prop

Yep, it's 2 1/4".  Here's the link to the manual so you can get familiar with the kit.  www.aero-works.net/upload/manual/60extra260.pdf

Hi guys

Mine is built with an OS 1.20AX swinging a 16x8 APC; turns about 8400. Hitech HS 5625MGs all around. 4c 3600mAh subC pack; 2.4GHz Futaba receiver. GC right on the nose with the battery pack mounted aft of the rudder servo; no extra weights. AUW (dry) about 7.5#. 50% expo on High rates; 40% expo and 60% throws on low rates. Maidened the other day and it flew beautifully. Very strong, maybe unlimited vertical (did not test that on the maiden). Very fast (360*/sec) roll rate on low rates. I didn't push it on high rates. Landed as easily as my 4*60. Several other flights with no problems. I did notice that the right wingtip seems to stall and fall out with more than moderate up elevator, leading to a snap more often that I would like.

Overall, really a superb aircraft.

Today, flew a few aileron rolls, stall turns, 1/2 cubans, etc, with no problems. Followed that with a few snap rolls, and then the plane became quite unstable. ANY elevator caused it to snap roll, even a very small amount to correct a shallow dive would make it snap again, which -> progressive loss of my 120' altitude -> ground contact. I found the battery pack wedged aft of the second former - obviously it had broken (my aft) mounting tray, probably during a snap, and moved the CG way aft leading to its demise. I know from RF G4.5 that the plane is pretty sensitive to the location of the CG. Moving it as little as 2 inches aft made the plane unflyable in the sim. Lesson learned - build a stronger battery tray! Pack weighs 10 oz, so a 6g maneuver would have put 4# of force on the tray.

Thats my initial take on it anyway. Does anyone have other ideas, suggestions? Or a diferent thought about causes? I like the plan enough that I'll probably buy and build another. Any thoughts on constructing a strong battery rack?

I hate to hear about your crash. I didn't make a battery tray, I just mounted 2 elevator servos and put the Rx battery infront of the wingtube and immediately next to my Rx.

If I were you, I'd go with Hyperion DS20-FMD's. They're cheaper, and I think they run better. They have about the same spec's really...they're just smoother (and $5 cheaper). Also, if you want to go a little more expensive....Hyperion DS-20x SMD's are the way to go. .11s and 130oz-in of torque AND they're coreless! Absolutely awesome. allerc.com carries them. It's what I'm running on ailerons and rudder. I've got HS-225MG's on each elevator half.

I'll check those out. I kinda wondered about those servos awhile back.
Did you cut the joiner for the elevator half's? I may have to do that also.

Yup...I just took a hack-saw to the elevator joiner piece and made it follow the same line as the elevator. It looks good, I think. I had always wanted a plane where both elevator halves could be misaligned....and now they are! It's just a lot easier to set-up, I think. The Extra even has another servo slot in the tail...which I used.
