I just purchased the DX7, to make the switch from A JR 7202 on PCM to a DX7 on spctrum, and I have a few concerns.
First off, I have never had anyproblems on 72mhz at all in 20+ years of flying.
Secondly, how is the range compared to 72mhz.
Thirdly, The only problems I have really heard of were related to battery voltage, for which I run 6.0 volt packs anyways and allways install batteries appropriate for current draw and impediance.
Is there anything I really have to worry about as far as the reliability of Spectrum?
My H9 1/4 scale Cub has all metal struts, and that concerns me, as 2.4 supposibly does not go around metal supposibly.

No worries. Practical range is the same for both systems.

Get the recievers apart and at 90 degrees to each other and do a good range check.

You will have no problems. If you can see the plane you can control it. Do check to see if you have the latest firmware for your receivers. The latest firmware eliminates the low voltage, "brownout", delay in regaining control after a low voltage event. I don't have time right now to find the specific internet link that instructs how to tell if you have the latest firmware update. I'm sure someone else will chime in with it. You can also call Horizon support and they will tell you how to ascertain if your receiver has the latest upgrade.

I had a DX7, An sold it to get a 9303 2.4, so I could do more. Yes it is best to run a 6 volt pack. I would put a receiver in front and one in back of the metal struts. I have buddies that have J3 an they fly them all the time on 2.4. It is just like 72 ,Yes metal will block it ,but the struts are not big enough to bother.

I had the same idea of infront of and behind the struts.

While I certainly have not installed the system in a lot of different models, my experience with what I have done is that the rx's don't see to be affected very much, if at all, by metal components i.e. wing tubes, aluminum gear reinforcments, etc.

They don't seem to work as well when installed close to the battery packs and I have observed some sensitivity to the orientation of the bundled wires coming out of the rx to the servos, but that is an anecdotal observation and may not hold true. I think the issue with the battery packs has to do with the density of the material in the packs rather than any electrical fields generated by them as locating the rx's between voltage regualtors does not seem to have an adverse affect.

The latest Quick Connect software update is easy to determine if it's installed although if you've just recently purchased the DX-7 system, it should be installed. Just turn off the rx with the tx still turned on and linked, then turn the rx back on. If it has the latest update the rx will come back on almost instantly, less than 1/2 second and the lights on the rx's will flash on/off but at a much slower rate than you see when binding. This is the power brownout indication and it will continue to flash the rx lights until you shut off the tx and turn it back on again so it's using two new frequencies for the rx to link with.

You should also have the AR7000 rx which has the Flight Log (or data logger) capability and IIRC, it'll be labeled that way on the rx. Get yourself a Flight Log and check the numbers as part of your ground range checks and the first few flights, it'll tell you if you need to move any rx's whether it's got anything to do with metal struts or not. The Flight Log has a few instructions on the card of it's packaging, but the better description of it's use can be found in the manuals for the X9303 and the 12X radios. IIRC, it's on about page 21 of the general section of those manuals and you find those manuals on Horizon's website. I've not seen the newer DX-7 manuals and the function was not available when I bought mine, so it does not have any information on the logger, they may have included that in the manuals for the newer DX-7 sets.
