I wanted to test Aerosave based fuel for my new TT F-75s....But at the cost of 19€ a liter of oil...I've bought Graupner fuel with 22% castor....

Anyway it scares me a little just using as low as 12-15% oil in the fuel...

Hi!
Why!???
People have been using 12-15% synthetic oil for decades over here in Europe!

My engines have seldom seen anything over 15% oil, absolutely no problem as long as the operator knows how to tune. Actually my last case of fuel is only 12% oil. Don`t be surprised if/when that 22% castor fuel of yours fouls up the valves with carbon buildup and causes the engine to run bad. Fourstrokes in particular should have only 2-4% castor in the mix and the rest synth. I use synth only, as castor is almost dead and extinkt here in Europe, only thing I miss about it is the smell

If you run a a four stroke sloppy rich and cool the exhaust valve will not carbon up but you will be down on power and use a lot of fuel

I've been using Aerosave ever since it came on the market, and I used Aerosynth and Aerosynth2000 (biodegradeble) before that. I think in all, I've used these oils for about 15 years now.
Ever since I switched to aerosave, I have made 3 mixes: regular 2 and 4 stroke, heli, and Ducted fan.
the mixes areas follows: Regular 13%, Heli 18%, and DF 22%, all with 10% nitro.

I have some four strokes (OS FS 91 Surpass) that are more than 10 years old, and they still perform as the first day, even though one of em is on my most favorite take-it-along-every-time plane (
Chriss Foss Wot 4 MKIII Classic). Other than replacing the bearings every 2 years or so, I hardly ever touch them. haven't had a flame-out in longer than i can remember, no tingling with the needles or tinkering with the valves. Actually, I had one of these engines that was put away for over 2 years, not preserved or anything. recently I put the plane bachk in service, fueled it, started, and flew without even adjusting it. I assure you that these look like new inside, no residue, shiny piston, clean valves (exhaust just a little blackened).
The only time I'll use castor, is actually for running in, since aerosave is so good, it would take forever to get the engine run-in properly. as mentioned before, Fuchs used to market a special run-in oil.

And when it comes to running hot, I doubt any engines ever run hotter, and are more ''abused'' than DF engines. I had one OS 91 VR-DF (running a dynamax at +22K rpm) burn a hole in the piston on a lean run once (well, nearly at least), so it must have run pretty hot..... despite this, it didn't seize, piston and sleeve were hadly scored, and there was no other damage to it. It actually stopped because the plug filament burned away (and this is probably why the piston got scored.....) The European DF scene used almost exclusively aerosave, so this must account for something, no?? I was told the higer oil contents for heli and DF were primarily for extra cooling purposes. Anybody want to do the test? Try running a DF combo, 22K rpm, on a mix with 22% castor, and see how long it'll last....

To me, this is the only oil I'll ever use!

Regards,
Wim

Hello Wim

I know this is an old thread but just in case you see this post

Have you tried the Aerosave 3 oil which is the newst oil in the Fuchs Aero*** range. It's viscosity index is said to be even higher than that of the Aerosave. The Aerosynth 3 is, however, a low viscosity oil so this makes me wonder how well it protects the engine in a lean run..

VI doesn't get you very far if the oil is low viscosity to begin with.
