Your lucky, nice being retired that young

I will be 45 in a month and I don't see myself retiring for around 20yrs.

On the other hand the wife is retired and she can do all the little unflattering task she wants. She always does the sewing for any interior work. Luckily I was able to salvage the old interior.

Status: offline 		Ok enough fun stuff,
The bottom wings will dry until tomorrow and get a light sanding. These will be ready for stitching. The top wings now have their 1st coat of Polycrylic on both sides. The stabs and rudder are now sanded and ready for tapes. I will get the elevators ready tonight. You can still feel a little of the weave thru the PolyC at this point. Once the tapes are on and 2-3 more coats of PolyC are applied and sanded the finish should be nice and smooth and ready for primer.

Status: offline 		My rib tape order arrived from Gary at Pink-It today.

The Waco eats up alot of tapes. There are 6 rolls .66"x54' and 2 rolls 1.32"x54' All the wing and tail feather ribs and fuselage stringers get covered with the .66" tapes and the larger perimeter tapes go around all the flying surfaces and top and bottom sides of the aileron spars.
I will start applying tapes to the fuselage this evening.

I haven't any progress done as it's been super cold here and I didn't want to fire up the furnace in the shop unless I could actually dedicate enough time to make it worthwhile. That and I just got back into town last night. -46.7 (converted to F for you Americans!) here yesterday morning, and that doesn't include the windchill. This weekend I'll get a little time in...

I will take some pics for you and explain how I put the tapes down. Over the stringers is very easy. It gets a little tricky over the stitching t get the proper effect.

Here are a few pics. I start by attaching the tape at one end with the stringer centered under the tape. I use a covering iron to iron the tape down along the top of the stringer keeping it centered and pulled fairly tight as I go. I then go back over each side of the stringer with a trim iron. This assures the pinked edge is ironed down. With the polycrylic I have to be careful not to touch the fabric with the iron or the polyc will stick to the iron.

The tapes you see applied to the fuse took approx 30-40 minutes. You also want to make sure you have the covering wiped down and it is dust free.

Status: offline 		Well the fuse is all taped, I also remembered I forgot to apply PolyC to the top wing center section and I want to do alot of work to it this weekend so I have 2 coats applied.

The tapes on the fuse look good. It took approx 132' of tapes just on the fuse. I plan on spending all weekend working on the Waco except for a break to watch the Super Bowl.

I will be putting PolyC over the tapes as well. I am going to try spray it thru my HVLP gun. I did find a whole spray can of PolyC in my cabinet I forgot I had so I will start with that.

To me the tapes show up a bit too much without a little filler over the top of them. Also the PolyC will help seal the tape edges down. I put the tapes directly over the Solartex on my Cub and painted a few coats of latex over the plane and still a few tapes lifted after time. I have never had a tape lift after being covered with the PolyC.

Status: offline 		I coated the fuse with PolyC and the remaining wing panels. While waiting for that stuff to dry I decided to play around with making some rivets.

After seeing how good the aluminum rivets look on VJ's STA I decided to try and make some using a 4-40 rod. I think they will look just fine on the Waco. I did a rivet count on one aileron and it is 329 between the top and bottom side. Multiply that x4 and also several hundred for the fuel tank and that will keep me busy a while. The old rivet details were glue drops, looked OK but these will look better. You can see in the attached pic I set a half doxen on the aileron. I don't even want to think about how long they will take to hammer out and apply.

I do have a question though. Have either of you heard of a nibbler. A tool for cutting metal that does so by punching out small little circles.

I have already hammered out 150+ rivets, it will be filler work when I don't feel like doing anything else. I think it will be worth it in the end.

Robert,
A nibbler cuts very fast I believe, not sure you can get individual disc and what size they cut? Hammering them out will be the fast part putting them on well!!!! That will probably try your patience.

How did you make the rivets? You mentioned using a 4-40 rod but I must be slow cause I can't figure out how the rod produces the little circles. Pictures would make it much easier for me to understand, if that is possible.

Sorry about that. To make the rivets you need a piece of metal rod the dia. the size you want the rivet. Grind the end so it has just a slight dome. Maybe 2deg. I cut a aluminum can open and lay it out flat on a piece of 1/8" thick hard rubber. You then just use a hammer to stamp out the disc with the metal rod. You want the painted side of the aluminum facing up so the finished rivet will be clean aluminum.
The rod I am using is the rod sullied with the Waco kit to make the cross brace wires. This had to be threaded to 4-40. It is actually a bit oversized. I would sugegst getting a piece of music wire the dia you desire as it is harder and will hold up better then using a piece of control rod.

Here are a few pics showing the steps. You will se my curious Alaskan Malamute in the background.

Status: offline 		I have a few hundered rivets made and 2 coats of polycrylic over the fuselage tapes. I will give that a sanding tomorrow morning and see if it needs another coat. The top wing center section will be ready for a sanding as well. I need to lay out the location of the fuel tank on the top and add the tapes and stitching at the trailing edge. I will probably work on putting some of the stitching on the bottom wing panels as well.

I really like doing the detail stuff but it eats up alot of time. My goal is to have the Waco ready for paint by mid March.
