Got three flights on it now and the power of the electrics really shows up in the climb out and acceleration. I'm putting together a video for posting and I haven't had a chance to get any decent flight shots yet so I relied on PhotoShop to give everyone an idea of what it looks like!

Hi Rich,

Are you planning to do a short kit/full kit in the future? I've been flying the 80" version since 2001 and love it. A big gasser would be awesome.
Thanks for designing such fine aircraft.

Pullup,
No plans for a kit at the moment but I will likely have multi-sheet plans package along with 'glass cowls, nose cap, rear cap and a clear canopy available since I had to make molds anyway! Thanks for the nice words.

The airframes are identical. The only variations are equipment installation and placement.

Will the plans be available before the accessories, looks like it would be a nice winter project, not sure if I missed it but what retract model # did you use.

Rich,

Do you have an estimate on the availibility of the plans pack?

Thanks

A couple questions if I may......

I am working on an AeroCommander that is the same size/weight as your Bronco and was planning on using A60's.

How many watts are you pulling with the A60-16L with 21x14's. I was hoping for 4000 with 10 cell but maybe I need to got to 12.

Are both motors pulling on one set of 12 cell 5400? If so, how long of a flight do you get and what is your mah's recharge amount?

What is your maximin amp pull per motor?

Sorry for so many questions but there are not that many large twin electrics out there...........

Paul

Paul,
The power package as described is making 3300W per side which is not pushing the equipment at all. I think the 16L's could easily be re-propped for 4000W; depends on what you're looking for in performance vs. duration.
I'm using two 12S (paired 6S actually) TP packs, one per side. I set my timer for 7:30 minutes and land when the beeper goes off. A typical flight consumes about 3600 mAh from each pack but a lot depends on throttle management. Max power pulls about 72-73A but I rarely use it for anything but takeoff and "show off" maneuvers requiring vertical pull.
Never too many questions, glad to share what I've discovered. Good luck and keep us all posted on your Commander project.
Astronblader.....Thanks!!
Rich

Thank you. I am pleased to hear that you are happy with 3300 watts which calculates to 130 watts per pound. Pleased because I was planning on 150-160 watts per pound as I previously did not have anything to compare it to. With a 50lb aircraft, that calculated to 8000 watts.

7 1/2 minutes is a very good flight time expecially when you are only using 70% capacity. Good Job.

I am also glad to hear you are putting your lipo's in each nacelle. Current wisdon on large twins is to parralell them from the fuselage so that each motor is pulling from one giant source. So in your case you would have 2 sets of 6 cells in series and then the sets parralled creating 12s4p10400mah. and placed in the fuselage. The theory behind this is that each engine would slow down equally when the packs deplete.

You are avoiding this problem buy using only 70% of the available mah's so no slow down occurs, I assume.

What I am currently grappling with is how to create access in the fuselage to remove all the cells for recharging. As you are well aware, removing of the center wing section after each flight is completely out of the question. It would take a pretty good size door and I am still pondering on it. Placing the cells in each nacelle simplifies it considerably and I may go that route. Thank you.

By the way, you are correct. I run several A60-16L's on ten cell and they are most happy with APC 24x12's for my application, so if you have the clearance I think you could pick up a little more power.

What Aero Commander are you building? Is it the Palmer Plans Shrike? If so, I also am working on building a Palmer Commander. However, I have stretched the fuselage on mine, and will be building it into a turboprop model. I am also going to be using electric power on mine. Post some pictures of what you have so far. I would love to see it.

It is the Giant Scale Twins 1/4 scale kit. 140" I beleive.

It is my #2. Here is #1 that I feel vibration took out. That is why I am going electric. Weighed 52lbs. There are more pictures and a video of #1 on the manufacturers website which is giantscaletwins.com

Hope to have it down by next spring but deeply involved in a 1/4 scale corsair right now.

Paul

I'm sorry you lost it. I have seen the video already. I recognized the airplane right off. It looks like it flew very well. Good luck with your electric conversion. Are you going to use the same paint scheme?

What can I say, I like yellow cause it is easy for these tired eyes to see. I don't suppose you have every seen any yellow corsairs up in Alaska have you?

There are two problems I have with twins.... 1. They don't last very long for me and 2. If I could just keep them under 50lbs. So far this one has beat #1 but then it is a cheating twin.

No, I haven't seen any yellow Corsairs yet. I'll keep an eye out for one though. That is a great looking Skymaster also. I saw a video of that flying too, but didn't know it was yours. I am making my Commander electric powered. Hopefully I can extend its life expectancy a little by doing this. What happened you yours if you don't mind me asking? I know you said vibration, but did you have structural failure, or an engine out, or something completely different?

Here is a picture of it going in. Definitely not a engine out as I had plenty of time to try everything including power and I heard both engines. Took a slow right turn on it's own and I could not recover. I had plenty of time to try power, rudder, airleron and full elevator. I think I lost 1/2 of the elevator because at full elevator it did a funny snap to the right, but I could not confirm because all servo's were stripped and damaged as the destruction was severe. Landed on ashphalt.

I am with you, disregard the prior post as this is a twin talk forum and I don't think Rich minds either.

That is a heartbreaking picture. It definitely could have been loss of an elevator. Especially with the slipstream created with this type of engine configuration, that would have a profound affect on the flight characteristics. Again, good luck with your next one, and hopefully it will bring you many dependable flying seasons. You should post some video of it when you finish it.

Paul,
Shame about your Shrike, glad to hear you'll try it again. Impossible to draw any conclusions from a single frame and, in most cases, post crash analysis usually results in "best guess' conclusions. Try to find some consolation in knowing that we've all been there! I am absolutley convinced, having been involved in this great hobby for a fair amount of time, that each of our creations has a small, invisible date somewhere in the airframe and when it's time..... it's time and you can't do anything about it! Keeps us coming back though..............
