Helis are inherently unstable. Without a more precise description of what the heli is doing, it's hard to even say that something is wrong. It may just be that you are surprised how hard they are to fly. A heli will not simply sit there in a stable hover with your hands off the sticks. You need to constantly make minute inputs/corrections to keep it there. Even more so with micros like the Piccolo and Hornet.

In any event, if there were a problem with your gyro, you would see the heli piroette (spin about the yaw axis, i.e., the heading axis, or which way the nose is pointing).

Also note that helis tend to drift even more when they are in ground effect (GE), which ends at about 1-1.5 feet of altitude. If the heli is sliding rapidly to one side as you try to lift it an inch or two off the ground and keep it there, that's normal. You need to get out of GE and get it trimed.

its not pieouetting but its sliding side to side and a bit back and forth, is this because of ground effect? or is something off balance?

Probably a combination of GE and your own overcontrol on the sticks. But hard to say. The heli should balance, with the pack, right on the main shaft, or darn close to it. Better to check balance at the skids than at the head.

the cg is very close to the center of the main shaft. one question. the way i have mounted the piccoboard it is facing to the left of the heli with the gyro unit up. in all the pictures ive seen of micro electric helis that have seperate gyros they have been facing forewards. is my gyro controlling the right axis and is there any way to test if it is working properly (tiliting the heli and seeing if the servos go on etc....)
thanks

Well I don't own a Pic, so I've no idea how the board should be oriented. But the gyro should only be connected to the rudder channel (i.e., the T/R motor) anyway, so there's no way it could be causing cyclic commands. It's easy to check whether the gyro is working -- think about it -- run the heli up in your hand holding it by the skids and maually yaw the heli, the T/R should resist the yaw. Adjust gain until you get tail wag, then back off a bit.

The gyro should be isolated from vibrations and should be mounted to a very rigid surface. I would not recommend a cable tie. I use four individual squares of servo tape, one at each corner of the gyro.
