There must be an engine solution glow or gas that would fit, or almost fit in the cowl, anyone have any ideas?

Going with a Moki 2.1 myself for a few reasons-

1. The Moki fits nicely within cowl, with just a few millimeters of head actually being exposed, almost invisible when viewed sitting on the ground.
2. Performance! I wanted as close to true jet like performance as feasible from the model. The 2.1 will hall the mail ala jet wise no worries with a nice corse pitch 2 blade Bolly carbon prop on song...
3. "Scale Sound" If you have heard and seen the full size PC-9 or the PC-21 perform in the flesh you will know what I mean. I love my 4 Strokes as much as anyone but these and most gassers simply sound all wrong. Electrics, yes would be closest to a turbo prop sound wise and could perform also but due to cost and comparable complexity versus the Moki they do not appeal to me either. The Moki 2.1. for me offers the best overall performance and sound balance for the PC-21.

My PC-21 is getting very close to the finishing line also, I just have been side tracked/carried away doing up a 1/2 decent scale cockpit, Ive mocked this up and Iam just about done now with just some minor details still to add...

Cheers- Marty

Jet FX, the Moki does sound like a good solution. Any chance for photos of the engine installed?

Hi,
I am thinking of making a larger PC-21 and I would appreciate help as to whether:
1. your kits have any negative incidence on the elevator stab (leading edge pointing downwards) if so how much?
2. what the engine incidence was (if any) on your aircraft and whether this has any starboard side thrust too
3. and what the wing incidence was

I am mentioning this because the scale drawings which I got provides a bit of head scratching since the engine has 4 degrees negative incidence and 3.5 degrees side thrust. The elevator stab was 1.5 degress negative too. Wing incidence I calculated as being 2.5 degrees positive. Wonder what your planes have.

Any help will be appreciated .

With thanks

Reuben

Hello F86_SABRE, (or another PC-21 owner)

I did not find any reply regarding your request. It is also really interresting for me to know these precious incidence values.
Did you get some infos ?

Didier

My pilots are based on some old 1/5 Century Jet figures I had in the draw although they are much modifyed...

Some more pics of the mods I have made for the higher performance expected from the Moki 2.1 including heavy duty glass fiber control horns and ball clevesis linkages on aileron and flap control surfaces, carbon fiber connecting rods for elevator and rudder....

Marty - where did you get the cockpit details and the pilot for the PC 21?

Also, how is the Moki 2.1 working out?  It looks nice and I bet powerful and sounds great!

Thanks Don

Flight report:

My PC 21 flew on Sunday! It was flown expertly a rc jet test pilot. To recap my PC-21is electric wit a Scorpion 5345 180 kv motor and a 100 A ESC powered by a 12S Extremepower 5000 mA battery swinging a 21x10 3 blade propeller. She flew well albeit the canopy jetsoning soon after takeoff (poor design on my part when i made the removable canopy and cockpit). Gregg landed after trimming her out. We tent and cillected the broken canopy , taped it up and taped it down on the fuse and flew again. This flight indicated thatthe CG was a bit foreward. i did move the battery pack forward about an inch from where it ballanced as per the recommended CG.
On landing the front nosegear did not lock up and the forward momentum and force caused it to partially collapse causing a prop strike!

The post flight debriefing indicated the following:
The plane handled well the recommended travels an CG is acceptable for for first flight.
Make sure the canopy is secure. A lot of air is pushed into the fuselage cavity through the nosewheel well. Possibble Sollutions: Build a box around the nosegear wheelwell, but allow for air entry in front fuse and exit at back for coolig of batteries.
Restrict opening in front of cowl and duct air across the motor and ESC
Fix the geardoors with screws to the mounting blocks.
She is a keeper!

Very nice looking. I just bought an ESM version that I want to do electric.

Would you change the power unit assembly any - motor, ESC, switches, etc?

What motor mount are you using?

What else would you do differently?

How about the canopy install, what would you change, and do you have any detail?

Best!

Don

Don,

my answers in bold

Would you change the power unit assembly any - motor, ESC, switches, etc? No. I am happy withthe prop, motor esc and battery setup. Just need to create better airflow

What motor mount are you using? i used a 32mm long gas engine standoff and and a sandwich of 2x6mm thick ply backplate between the standoffs and the firewall. Inside the fuse i mounted the bolts with body washers to spread the load.

What else would you do differently? Mount the Geardoors with screws.

How about the canopy install, what would you change, and do you have any detail? Not sure yet, but will lookat the ways the pattern and jet pilots fix their canopies

Hope it helps.

Regards

SunShyne,

Do you need a full retract set or just parts?

I recently bought some trailing link retracts for a different plane (Falcon 120) from Dreamworks in the States. Very nice craftmanship, their stuff will work on the PC-21 too. Try them.

Thaba Raptor, how about an overall assessment of your electric setup. I went back through the threads and you have been flying this for quite a while. I am currently gathering the info to purchase a motor for mine and the Scorpion thus far leads the pack. I will be adding a Varioprop 5 blade scale prop and spinner to mine. Does the motor run cool? Flight times? Speeds? Any info you could provide will be helpful. Thanks
Tom

Hi Tom,

My pilots "ejected" during the maiden flight. it took me some months to get hold of a new canopy and refit and made it more secure. On the maiden the motor did get a little warm. I am planning to onstall a baffle plate on the insideof the air-intake and force the air up and then down out the bottom outlet over the esc.

I lost one of my geardoor covers on the maiden as well 9my stupidity. fitted them for position with silicon only, forgot to install screws before maiden.......... I still need to fabricate new ones. likely from aluminium or plastic.

It is only personal prefference but I will not go byond 3 blades for flying. 5 blade propos are nice for static display but you loose so much efficiency that it is not worth it.

My power to weight ratio seems fine and she tracks well in the air and lands easily with flaps applied. Mannual recommendations for throws and CG are good for first flights.

Regards

Carel

Thanks Carel,
Sorry to hear about the "ejection" hope they were picked up quickly Mackone has had some cooling issues with his also, looks like I will need to address this during my build. I'm going to stick with 5 blade prop just for the "gee whizz" aspect. Good luck with your continuing project.

Tom

Hi!

Just wanted to share some pics/info of my

I'm in the process of finnishing my build of this plane (my first gaser - weeee). This was a winter project and for an ARF it took quite some time to complete (I'm used to electric power).

All that is left is to replace the linkages to the rudder and elevator since I don't like the cheap hardware supplied in combo with a 55cc engine.

Here is the light system in action :

Specs:

Engine: DLE 55cc
Prop: Meizlic 20x10 with a HK CF spinner
Ignition bat: 2300mah A123
Servos: 5x Hitec HS-5685MH, 3x 645MG (flaps & nose gear) and 1x Power HD standard servo for gear valve.
Receiver: MPX RX-16 DR Pro
Receiver bat: 2x 1500mah lipos
Regulator: Jeti MAX BEC
Kill switch: Powerbox
Light system: Braincube

To install the strobe leds I had to cut out a lid on the bottom side of the wing tips (glas fiber) to have access to the inside of the wingtips. The Braincube system is great but the leds are quite bulky since each led come on a "large" circuit board (perhaps the rather hot 5W leds has to be mounted this way?). So I couldn't just drill one small hole for the led. Next step was to drill a hole for the light, the difusor was then glued on the outside of the drilled hole.

If you visit their homepage you get a better picture .
http://www.braincube-aero.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65&products_id=199

Yes it's an ESM.
