My Ercoupe was designed as a semi-scale model, back in 1976, and was one of the first giant scale models to hit the market. I increased the size of both the stab and rudders by about 10% to make a better flying model. Attached is the three view that I used. Hope it shows up enough to be useful.

Rick-
Click onto this website, http://www.ercoupe.net/index.html.
When you are in, click onto the photo album. There are over 225 photos of Ercoupes, that are privately owned, throughout thw globe. It has been a very useful site for referrences. I'm just unpacking my 1/5th scale this Christmas weekend. It's a Jim Messer Kit from the late 80's. It's only a 72 inch w.s., so I'm planning on putting O.S.'s new .91 4 stroke engine in her, and spinning a 14 x 6 prop. Good luck finding your scale 3-D views that you were in search of.

I too have a Jim Messer Ercoupe. I did the same as you Jim. The tail with the stringers seemed a little twisty so i covered it with 3/32 balsa. True monocoque now. Built about 15 yrs ago with Q35. Still flies great.

To jimsoque and Flypaper 2:

It's nice to know that some of my Ercoupe's are still around. I just sold the original, built in 1976, that had over a thousand flights on it and never damaged. It was one fine flying bird.

Jim Messer -
The Ercoupe Kit is out of the box!
Keep and eye on my first post, I will add to the story line as the weeks progress. My future notes will read something like this:

12/27/03 Fuse parts out of the box, everything looks in order. Plywood B clued w/ balsa T. All formers marked on plywood Q, and wing saddle. Cabin starting to take shape. See earlier post for photos.

Thanks,
Jim Soque

1/6/04 Ercoupe Notes: Fuselage Construction of J. Messer's 3-93 1/5th scale,
Fuse formers A thru F have been stabilized by insertion of carbon fiber rods on left and right. Fuselage Jig is labeled as per the plans with all the formers A thru L, with notation to distance between each former. Inserting from the front, backwards, each former is aligned with the jig. In the case of former K, - tail formers, I chose to end the jig here, and continue the support of the tail with just the spruce stringers. The top and bottom stringer are 3/16 sq. spruce, they were added, taking careful note of being perpendicular to the bench and the jig. All formers are glued into place. Stringers make up the sides of the fuse, and a bundle of stringers are what I had to choose from. They are in a big bundle and considering there are no designations as to the type of wood to use, or the size of the wood to use, sorting took an hour. Taking a former, rib, or tailpiece, and seeing if the enclosed wood fit the cut out notches in the above accomplished mostly this. Of note: this is a kit with out an assembly manual, and nowhere on the plans does it mention what size of stringer to use in which location. The plans simply designate the number of the wood piece. I should have started by labeling the center Jig section, and this is merely a hard stock of balsa labeled (63) on the plans. I concluded, after all of this, that the spruce stringers that are 36 inches and 3/16 sq must be for the fuse top and bottoms, and for the front of the cabin. The 48 inch spruce stringers, that are 3/16 x 1/8 must be laminated one at a time, but, must be for the fuse sides left and right. All of the B-grade balsa stringers were set-aside for the wing and tail groups. The engine I plan to use is a Surpass 91 4 cycle; I planned for 123 mm of engine, spinner hub to the carburetor. Therefore, measured out that amount, plus an extra 3-4 mm and attached the beginning of the cowl pieces, balsa R and S.

Jim, You're doing a nice job on the fuselage. Mr. Messer makes you think a lot, doesn't he?

One of these days, I'm going to build another 1/4 scale Coupe. To me, his building methods are a pleasant change from modern kits.
