Just picked her up about an hour ago. She looks like she is ready to scream through the air with the magnum 52 4 stoke. I know not all planes fly the same, but what are some of the flight characteristics 109s have?

Mike:

Looks real good - has it even been flown ? Do you know the
kit ?

Watch out for nose-over if your field is grass.
Elevator pitch is sensitive.
Start off with low rate on ailerons -- about 1/2" deflection

I've got a couple of the Magnum 52's -- not a bad engine for the
money. My old Midwest 109 has a 52 on it -- the 4 S sound is so
much better than the 2 stroke.

i was fortunate enough to have somebody offer me to fly one of these planes. it flies great!!! i love it, flight characteristics were crisp and clean, but as for landing and take-offs i dont know, although he seemed to have no real trouble doing either, BTW, it looked exactly like yours, but had an os 40 la, and man it hauled a$$... what kit is that???

The plane has never been flown, the engine hasn't even be fired up and all the servos have yet to recieve any command. So I guess you could call her a virgin All the local fields I fly at are all paved so I shouldn't really have too much of a problem with nosing over. Also your right about the throw on the elevators, it looks like it needs to be tweaked b/c it travels about twice as far down as it does up.

I have heard mixed reviews about magnum 2 strokes but I have heard only good about their 4s. This is my first 4, so I am super anxious to fire her up.

Shortman--
Its a modeltech 109 40 size. The .40 size plane is no longer made. However, they do make a .25 size that looks the exact same but is quite a bit smaller. It looks like it is a very quality aircraft. I will need to touch up the covering in a few places but it is very minimal.

Hey Mike!! I have one of these as well with a ThunderTiger 46. I would suggest that you bend the landing gear wires to come out to the leading edge of the wing. This will prevent the nose over take off and landings that this plane is known for.I made new landing gear wires for mine about 2 weeks ago and did away with the splayed-out wires , now the wires come straight down from the wing without being angled out toward the wing tips.Just be sure the tires are at least even with the leading edge when looking from top of the plane.
I camo'd mine with some grey spray paint on the wings and fuse, then clear coated with some flat clear. You might want to double-check the glue joints in the firewall and even epoxy some tri stock balsa to the inside of the fuse- firewall joint. They use hot glue to assemble these planes so check all glue joints you can get to.You will enjoy this plane because they fly great.
Best of luck with her!! John McGowan

John- It is great to hear that she is a good flying plane. I was so wrapped up in how cool she looks I didnt even think about the performance until she was sitting in my family room. I think the guy I bought it from may have done the landing gear tweak b/c when I look straight down from the top I can catch a glimpse (not much) of both tires. The angle the lg is at is quite steep. I know its scale but I think I may be putting some perpendicular ones on like you did.

The hot glue comment makes me kinda nervous however. I would like to think they did a little more quality job than that. Either way I was going to go through the plane with a fine tooth comb.

thanks for the replies

Mike:
Since the engine is new and I've had experience with my new
Mag. 52's. You need to pull the rocker cover and look for small
metal shavings that may be inside. Also the gap on mine was off
from recomended specs. The gap on lifters should be .004 to .010
Mine was about .015 on the exhaust valve. I reset both to .006
Also I use 15 % nitro. w/ 18 % oil to break-in, then I go to 15/16% ratio. The two of mine have been running strong for six
years now, so the $125.00 ea. was a good investment.
