Firstly I have never taken an aerial photo as yet but intend to start. Most of you guys seem to be sticking with electric planes, is there a reason for this other than vibration issues?
secondly, I have found a nifty little device the Mustek DV3000, it is capable of taking film as well as photos, has anyone tried one of these and what sort of results have you had if any?
any help here would be much appreciated, I intend to fly a Flair Piper cub with an Irvine 46 up front so will have plenty of power and the camera alone is only 110g, even with a servo and mount the overall weight will not over power the plane as it has plenty to spare.

Any thoughts anyone

Thanks in advance

Nick

With electric motors you are able to switch off when shooting. I used to fly with both video and photo camera on regular ASP72 powered motorglider. No problems as long as the equipment was packed in dampning material...... My idea with electrics is to get shots from other sites than my flying field. I would like to find a nice motive, take my wing out and shoot without the need for a 100 meter airfield.
I have a GP Cub with a Saito FA80 twin which I will use for aerialphotography. Will be great to get extreme altitude.
If you just try and adjust you will probably succeed with your Cub. Shouldn't be a problem. I use Mustek GSmart3. I don't know the cam you write about, but you should be able to modify it with an electronic switch that you connect directly to the rx. Then you remove the need for the servo.

Well, I can definitely recomend it, it's great fun!
As long as you can produce a vibration proof housing for the camera with foam etc, you should be able to eliminate vibration. Obviously things are easier with electric as you can get very nice steady shots with floaty, slow, light weight planes with no motor vibration. A lot of people use the cheaper Mustek gsmart or Aiptek 1.3 pencams, these are the most popular. Your plane should handle that camera nicely! I have the gsmart mini 2 which only weighs 40grams! My electronic switch came from www.rc-flysoft.com I've only heard of these tiny switches attached to the cheaper mustek and Aiptek pen cams though. Definitely recommend these!

Thermite: Sure seems like it. Just wondered, have you concidered using some sort of balloons lifting your aircraft up before shooting. I saw an example from Australia (I think) and they used weatherballoons on a simple glider, brought it VERY high up. Those shots were amazing. My concern is getting stuck with balloons, losing the plane.....and of course, McDonalds probably wouldn't give me all the balloons I need!!!

Hi Forus,

Yes I've seen those pics, seriously cool, doesn't the glider even pilot itself back to the launch point by GPS??

That's a really interesting idea to try!!
I've even got a weather balloon at home.
I suppose you could tether the balloon to the tail
of a glider or slowstick, devise some sort of cutting device or
release mechanism you'd get with a tug/glider setup!
You could get the plane up to a real good height using bino's
to spot and then release when you think you're high enough!
This could be a fun little project, if a little risky if the cut-away mech doesn't work!!

Sure would be cool. Satelite view! I guess you are right about the GPS nav stuff. They had done some serious hacking to web cams and GPS modules as I remember. But The basic method should work any way. Wouldn't let my favorite gear go up on the first try though.....Something to think about at least.

Hi has any one used a Nisis pen cam I have one sat here doing nothing and would like to try it on one off my heli's. By the way you guys that want to use balloons I have 3 big bottles of Hydrogen to get rid off . I have filled a few bin liners with it goes up fast but I would not want to be in a light aircraft flying by. Gordon
