OK, ended up with the battery pack (small 5 cell 6V NiMh) just behind the canopy in the turtle deck. I just cut a 2" lite ply plate and glued it in on the stringers creating a shelf in the turtle deck. Roll her over on her back and she stays level the length of the box, just the way I like it, and it's still very stable on the elevator.
I went back and fine tuned the KN settings and this thing flys on a wire now.
On the down line she had just a hint of pulling out, I put in about 2% down elevator slaved to the throttle at idle and that took care of that.
I'm in love and believe the OS75 was the best choice overall. The stock muffler hanging down makes it look a little like a bomber, but not too bad. I'd maybe do the next one with a pitts muffler.
Well, it's just a lot of flying now, and maybe some more fine tuning. One of the advanced IMAC guys is teaching me the finer points of tuning, but even he is surprised by how well this Yak flies.

I was trying to mount my engine to the plane, and I can't get the 4.75" distance. The screw holding my carb down was hitting the screw holding the engine mount down. I pulled out one of the carb screws to get about 1/8". It's at about 5" right now. The Saito 100 itself is like 4.53in. I was going to notch a hole in the motor mount for the motor mount screw....even if it's only on that one side. Will this weaken the mount or is it okay to do? Any other ideas??

The saito 100 is about 11mm longer than the 82. I can't believe that Aeroworks didn't put any more adjustability than that into this plane. I guess if we want to run a 100, it will have to stick out a 1/4 inch. You could cut the motor box down a 1/2 inch, just kidding.

I have had similar problems with other airplanes. You can counter sink the motor mount bolt hole enough to leave the bolt head flush with the mount. Somewhere in this thread, someone else has done the same thing. I would leave both carb bolts in, might crack the carb otherwise. Good luck!

Have you guys considered putting a .91FX (with Pitts muffler) instead of .75AX? The .91FX is not only more powerful but also 2.2 oz lighter. Yet, the mounting dimensions and all other dimensions are exactly the same. Only significant difference is in the distance from backplate to drive washer, AKA length, which is not a big deal. Lentgth of .75AX is 94.5mm and that of .91FX is 96 mm. Just 1.5 mm longer. Lengthwise and hightwise dimensions are also much smaller than Saito 100, so there shouldn't be any problem in terms of cowl management.

OS .91FX with a Pitts muffler should give unlimited vertical to these planes IMO. Any comments?

Hi djr1007,

I am very curious about the overall dry weight of your 60-90 Yak with .75AX on it? From what read most Aeroworks 46-61 Edge 540T ends up with around or above 7 lbs. Note that they are advertised as 5.5 to 6 lbs ARF. So since the AW 60-90 class is advertised as 6 to 6.5 lbs planes I'm wondering if we should expect more like 7-8 lbs overall dry weight. This is a critical point in choosing an appropriate engine so I would really appreciate news on the weight of your and everyone else's setup.

BTW, I have a Hangar 9 Pulse XT 60 with .75AX on it. This plane is advertised as 7-8 lbs, and with my .75AX I have almost unlimited vertical (I use MA 15x6 prop). So, I am a bit concerned when you tell the vertical is not unlimited with .75AX. It might be because of your 14x6 prop or weight.

I can't find where anyone countersunk their screw on this thread. That's what i'm going to do now, I just wasn't sure if it weakened the mount too much. One important question I have is if it's okay for the engine to be touching the motor mount or not.

I think that the .75AX should be a lot of power for this plane. I think the .91FX is a better deal, though....and better suited power-wise.

I am going to mount the O.S. 91 FX with a pitts muffler on today. So far it looks like the only modification is to relocate the fire wall blind nuts so I can mount the engines at 90 degrees. I will let you know how it comes out.

Hi Guys,

Has anybody here had any experience with the new OS FSa-110 4-st engine yet? I am entertaining the idea of buying one and using it in AW 60-90 extra. I know it is a tad more expensive than Saito 100 and 115, but I am kind of sold to its supposedly cleaner operation. I am trying to find its sound videos and first hand experiences, without any success so far. Can you direct me to the sites you might know.

Thanks

i hear good things about it, I'm in college so if i get the money i might buy one, I'm about to order the Aeroworks yak 60-90, but if i don't I'm going using a 91FX with an inverted exhaust, it is a brand new engine so i think a review from a mag. or website should be coming soon

Hey guys, what are you doing about installing those big engines?? My Saito 100 isn't even close to fitting the provided blind-nuts. It's like 1/4" off!! Tomorrow I'm going to redrill the firewall so that the Saito 100 will actually fit. I was considering mounting the engine completely inverted so I don't have the head sticking out of the cowling. Does anyone have any tips and/or pics of installing big engines on this plane?

I got 3 of my servos today, and am waiting for my other ones to come so I can finish the install. Those Hyperion servos use the same spline as Futaba servos, so my old Heavy Duty Servo Arms fit them! I also bought the 6 meters of standard gauge servo wires to replace servo extensions. I've heard it's more efficient to just solder in longer wires than using extensions. Either way, that's what I'm going to do.

Got mine Wednesday and broke three of the four engine mounting blind nuts, just a pain, but after reading this thread I would recommend throwing the ones that come with the plane out and put in better ones. Tried to fit the Saito 100 but went back to the Saito 82 Hope it is enough

Maidened the Yak this morning, it was about 40 degrees with no wind for the 1st flight. Quite a hand at first then I brought it down moved the CG slightly forward and dialed in some more expo and tried again. 2nd flight the wind picked up to about 15 mph but the Yak handeled great after the adjustments. Did not get to crazy but rolls are very axial and pretty fast even on low rates, inverted flight slightly nose down, inverted flat spins were perfect and vertical was completly unlimited with the O.S. 91 fx, pitts muffler and a APC 15 x 4w prop. Then the wind picked up to about 20 - 25 mph and I called it a day.

Where do you have your CG set? I'm thinking about putting it on the wing tube for the first flight and work from there.

Had the CG at about 2 3/4 from the LE of the wing at 1st for 3d. I then adjusted it back to the what the instructions say (2 1/4 from the LE) and go figure it seems about right. I will play with this a little more on a warmer day and after a few more flights.
